“Nice hotel with some issues to improve”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2012

We have stayed 4 nights in this nice hotel in August 2012, in 2 rooms, parents with three youngsters.
The hotel has lot of nice positive things, but some things were disappointing and need improvement.
Some Positive things:
Friendly and helpful hotel staff, we had good reccomendations where to go and what to do, as well as a good will to resolve any problem.
Very nice view of the bay
Hotel is clean
Nice swimming pool, Nice beach, Excellent food

Disappointing issues:
Wi-Fi:
I paid 10 Euro for 200 minutes of connection in public areas (If you are lucky, you may have wifi coverage in your room). I would expect from a 5-star hotel to have free wifi in all rooms.
No Shampoo:
Only two small soap sticks in the bathroom, if you need more soap on following days, you need to ask for it. No Shampoo, nor conditioner. At the hotel shop they sell only small medical shampoo at a high price of 12 Euros. You have to discover by yourself that there is an outside Supermarket, 15 minutes walk from the hotel, where they sell a good shampoo, in a larger bottle at less than a quarter of the price.
There is a safe in the room, but I had to pay 7.50 Euros to use it.
The Air condition in both rooms did not work and we were without aircondition for 24 hours, in each one of the rooms. In one room the aircondition also leaked and there were lots of water on the room floor and continuous noise of drops during sleeping time (we had to shut down the aircondition). We had to ask three times, morning, noon-time and again in the evening, until problem fixed.

We spent one week of our holidays in this hotel. Room was spatious but need some refurbishing, looks a bit used. Very nice small beach marked with blue flag, pool with salt water. Food good and enough, just in a 4* hotel the orange juice served for breakfast should be made from a concentrate. Staff very friendly.

we recently stayed at the istron bay hotel and found it an oasis of quite off a very busy road. this family run hotel which we first stayed at 15 years ago, is still a "class outfit". i would not recomend going with chidren, as the food is mainly cretan cooking ,but delicious, this hotel is a perfect chilling out spot.

Room Tip: allways stay in hotel, not in ground rooms

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights with my daughter. I booked this hotel based on the previous reviews. Before booking my husband wrote the hotel to ask if they offer sight seeing tours and how far is the hotel from the airport. They replied and I quote " you can book tours to all destinations from reception and that it will take 65-75 min to the hotel."
The drive to the hotel took 2.5 hours and on the way back 2hours and 10 min more than the flight from Israel !!! ( Includding pick ups from 3 other hotels)
When I arrived to the hotel I was told that they only offer walking tours !! The only place that we could visit was Agios nikolas 30 min by bus. The other 4 days we were stuck in the hotel we tried calling tourist agencies to arrange a bus tour but they said that the hotel is to far to pick us up. There is no airconditioning in any of the public areas including the dining room so the wifi they offer only in public area is useless nless you dont mind to sweat like a pig. They offer 3 resteraunts but only one was open. The pool was large but with salt water. Allot of stairs to get to the dining room, we were very dissapointed This is no way a 5 star hotel
No shampoo in the rooms only soap everything costs extra the safe the wifi and even the ping pong racks

The hotel is nice and wonderfully located on its own quiet beach. The front of house staff are friendly and helpful. We stayed in the grounds of the hotel in the Istron Bay Villas which give use of all the hotel facilities. The overall ownership seems to be the same extended family. The villas, managed by the excellent Dmitris, are exceptionally good - each with it's own pool - but the children in our large group found the beach and the large hotel pool irresistable. All went perfectly until one child cut herself badly on the metal steps of the hotel pool, and in trying to locate the cause two others were also cut. The receptionist expressed concern but said that there was no maintenance staff to deal with the problem, and it seems that the management did not bother. Together with other guests we sealed off the steps, but from subsequent correspondence the management admitted to doing nothing for four days to remedy a simple problem which exposed all the hotel and villa guests to unnecessary danger This poor reaction to a simple safety issue was a major surprise and a nasty shock.

Overall the hotel, and especially the villas, are idyllic. Apart from the safety issue the only gripe was the imitation orange juice for breakfast. In summary the management's attitude and response to a simple problem, the location of which was clearly pointed out to a number of staff and in writing to the management, was appalling and certainly does not fit well with the general helpfulness and concern of their friendly staff.

If you decide to use this otherwise very nice hotel be aware that the management does not seem to care.

Room Tip: Use the villas which have nice private pools The accommodation ratings refer to the villas - not...

We (two families, children ages 11 -15yrs) stayed for a week - for the 3rd time in eight years. Stunning setting, quiet, relaxed & peaceful ambiance, excellent 'bungalow suites' in beautiful gardens overlooking the sea. Nothing too much trouble for friendly and helpful staff. So perfect we almost want to keep it a secret!

Room Tip: Bungalow Suites excellent for families and can be interconnected

We went to the Istron Bay the last week of August 2011. We'd had a really hard summer renovating our house and needed a break. This was perfect! Unusually for us we went on a package with Thomas Cook (I think) and it was ideal. We were given a taxi from the airport to the hotel as so few travellers were going there. Our room was reasonable size with a lovely curved roof and a balcony over looking the bay. The hotel is set in its own grounds and owns the whole bay so you can walk, swim and lie anywhere. The pool is lovely - fresh water about 18m long oblong so great for lengths. The beach has lots of recliners and as its owned by the hotel so no extra charges! The food was average. We were all inclusive which was fine. There was lots of fresh fruit but the cooked food lacked crunch - most of it was soft but reasonably tasty. I wouldn't be put off by it, it just could have been better. We took the bus into Aghios Nicolas one day which was nice and the bus stop is right outside the hotel. Overall a lovely place for a summer break - I'd recommend it. P.S. It does need a refurb as there's lots of brown fabric but if you know that before you go you're ready for it ...
