Our experience seems to have been very similar to that of celiah h. We were also give a shabby room up five flights of stairs with no lifts in the hotel and we are both over 60 too, though they couldn't have known that beforehand, of course. Also, they don't seem used to the idea of people arriving by plane after midnight. There is no night reception and we arrived to find the hotel closed with a note pinned to the door giving us a number to ring.

The staff were very friendly and helpful however, and the food was good if a little unvaried, so don't rule this hotel out. Noisy air-conditioning unit and TV with a single English language channel.

We seemed to be the only Anglophone guests. Decent beach is a good 15-20 minute walk away.

A warm, friendly, family run hotel where the staff take an interest and are always there to help. Good accommodation and facilities representing very good value for money. The pool is very attractive and, though close to the road, is quiet since there isn’t a great deal of traffic. The buffet breakfast is delightful; the choices available will manage to suit everyone. The busy season buffet dinner is excellent and, again will provide everyone with sufficient choices. The hotel is located very conveniently for the airport at Heraklion and is ideally situated for visiting that city, Knossos, Phaistos and indeed all of the eastern end of Crete. Thoroughly recommended! We stayed in May 2011 and the following September.

After having read earlier reviews, I was in doubt, if I should book this hotel. I did not regret that I did it. The staff is friendly, efficient and observant. The room was clean and had everything we needed. The pool was clean and I was there alone. When I told the staff that we had to leave before breakfast, they offered to prepare a "baguette" for us in the evening. It turned out to be a real breakfast with coffee. That was really good, much better than I had expected. The evening meal was ok.
Nevertheless, I would not want to stay for a longer period. But that has nothing to do with the hotel itself but its location. It is located at a road with a lot of traffic. It is about 1 km to the sea. The way I took to the sea, there was no sidewalk and where I arrived, there was nothing like a beach. For me, it was only an evening walk. I did not search or ask for a beach or a better connection. Maybe there is one.
My impression was, that most of the other guests stayed longer. I did not discuss with them their experience.

I chose this hotel because it is a quick drive (ca 15 min.) to Heraklion airport, where I delivered the rental car. For that purpose the Erato hotel is perfect. It is much cheaper to stay at this hotel than in the town of Heraklion itself.
