“Paradise in nature - not only for hikers!”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

Although we stayed only two nights at Milia, we fell in love with this place! The Mountain Retreat is located in the middle of nowhere which makes it that unique. You can be sure that nobody comes there randomly and there's no bus tourism - luckily! It's perfect to go hiking - that's what we did. Thanks to Tassos who showed us a really nice route (6h walk). But it's also nice just to stay in a traditional mountain village. The rooms are not the cheapest, but they are comfortable and clean and you have a nice breakfast included. And keep in mind that you support the ecological project! The food in the restaurant was one of the best we had during 2 weeks on Crete (see seperate review).

We had a studio which was very nice. The location is amazingly lovely with mountains all around. Some very nice walks around the settlement. Food excellent especially for me as a vegetarian. Tassos is lovely and a young lady in the restaurant whose name we did not get was charming in a very low key way. The only tiny point that would have improved it was to have a kettle or something to make a cup of tea on (so English I know). I loved our roof terrace too with a hammock - great in the sun.

Room Tip: We had studio one - lovely roof terrace with sun quite late in the day - with excellent hammock.

We stopped only for lunch and simply loved it. Rare moments out of this world. Impressive driving to get there, lovely scenery, peaceful, beautiful nature. Food was excellent. I also disagree with the reviewer who said food is expensive. For 2 people, we spent € 34 for a great lunch incl. wine, excellent btw. We received the recommendation from the owner of hotel Ammos in Chania, another very fine place, # 1 tripadvisor hotel in Crete...
Will surely go back there when in need of peace and rest..

We stopped by Milia only for lunch, but it left a big impression on us. It's a beautiful and peaceful location, with amazing light. The drive there was interesting but definitely worth it. I must say that I really enjoyed the food, it really was one of the best lunches ever. I disagree with the reviewer that said that it was expensive, we paid €24 for 3 people. If you like good healthy locally sourced food then you will not be disappointed. We didn't stay long, but are planning to return for a longer stay next time we are in Crete.

We absolutely loved Milia! We were in Crete for our honeymoon and Milia was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip (and we went to some pretty amazing places)!

* Wonderful location, with fantastic walks from the village. The views in spring are amazing.
* Fantastic - characterful - rooms (we had one of the suites); there was plenty of hot water, and we warmed the room with a fire in the evenings.
* Delicious food (we had breakfast, lunch and supper there) with a constantly changing menu. The breakfasts were good, but the lunches/suppers were fantastic. We would recommend the 'omelette with greens' and the stuffed zuccini flowers (if they have them) - totally delicious and undoubtedly the best food we had in Crete.
* Incredibly kind and helpful staff.

We really cannot rate Milia highly enough. The only (slight) downside was the road there (we made the mistake and took the first road to Milia (coming south from Kissamos) - the later road from Vlatos is much better). But we're already planning our next visit.

I rely on Trip Advisor so much and this is my first report....I am way overdue! But I have missed this place since I left there last May. The staff is amazing. They took us on a magical trip to Elafonisi- one of the highlights of my two week trip to Greece. The restaurant is wonderful- both as to food and ambience. It is simply a beautiful, relaxing place. It is impossible not to unwind there. Go and enjoy yourself. You won't be sorry.

We choose to stay at Milia resort for three days. we had booked 3 medium sized double rooms and we had prepayed the reservation via a bank deposit. at our arrival they told us that two of the rooms we booked were already given, so they offered a very small room instead of a medium, and a large suite instead of the other. this fact means that two of our friends were treated unfairly.
the rooms were clean, equiped with fireplace and 30kg of firewood daily. in case that the 30 kg is not enough, you can get more with an extra charge of 0.35€ per kilogram.
the personnel was very kind and very friendly, the service was quick but the food was terrible. the quantity of every plate was extremely small and absolutely not enough for a grown up, and very very very expensive. we spent 100€ for 6 very small plates, one green salad and 1kilogram of unbottled wine.
the breakfast was included in the rate but it was really poor too.
to sum up, the rooms were nice and clean, with all the nature around, ecological due to the lack of electricity, the staff was very friendly but the food was poor and small plates in very expensive prices. we recommend this place only if you have brought food on your own, because the restaurant absolutely does not worth visiting it and there is no other place around to eat and survive.

Dear Guest,
we first like to thank you for the review although was not so helpful for our place.
But please allow us to express our opinion about all that matters, starting with your reservation.
You were asking for 3 rooms with fire place and ask one of them have a sitting area.
So you get three rooms with fire place and one of them had a large sitting space, actually was a suite, and given in the cost of a large double.
In a complain that one of the three rooms was smaller we answer immediately with a discount of 5,00 euro per night.
But it is described clearly in our web page that none of the rooms is the same, as the whole settlement, is based up on the ruins of the medieval settlement.
So all the rooms have their original and unique dimensions.
About the food I haven't clarify yet where was the problem, as described as terrible, but on the complain you did in the discussion we had,
the problem was pointed exclusively in the price of it.
You said that the quality was excellent.
You have ate two times, the first time you payed 98,50 for 2 salads,1 sausage,2 fried potatoes,2 starters, 1 vegetarian dish,
4 times lamb 3 coffee and one and a half liter of wine.
The second time you get 1 salad, 1 starter,5 plates of the main course and 1 liter of carafe wine but for sure you have paid 62,00
All the above taken from the archive of our cash machine.
Also you were informed, via e-mail, at the time you send request that the rate per meal per person is between 13,00 and 19,00 euros.
So even that you say have payed 100,00 (the truth is 98,50 for 14 plates and not for 5) for six persons you were lower of the highest price per person.
The average was 16,40 per person. The quantity of food per plate there is no doubt that is much more than the normal as almost everywhere on the island.
Except that all the rates of the restaurant easy can be found in our web page so nobody might have a complain about that.
About the quality do not have any doubt that we are always trying to have the best of the best. That's why a lot of the products are coming from our organic certified agricultural production and some other from nearby producers. That means we offer what is called "zero km food".
Believe me, is more easy nowadays to buy the cheapest food from far away and will wait on your door, with just a telephone call. That will never happen to us.
We will continue try to discover the best one.
Also at the end of your review you mention that there is no other place to eat giving the sense that we are pushing our guests to eat here.
We had never done anything like that and this is out totally of our ethic. Is not our problem if the restaurants in nearby villages prefer to be closed in the winter.
We do what we do because we love our origin place and because we love making people be in love with the place.
The prove of that is the worldwide recognition we have for 20 years from guests who visit us from the very end of this world.
Travelers that have been in the most luxurious and upmarket places in the world and they believe that our accommodation and food services even that they are simple,
have quality that there is no cost to tell.
And even If I might be wordy Milia is much more than a "hotel". It is a life time project which protect and revitalize a big and unique environment for the upcoming generations but for you too.
This responsibility is so far away for what has been described - in a previous review probably from another part of your company - as monopoly.(written in terrible Greek)
At the end I must say, the misnomer characterization on your first sentence "Milia resort" led you to the description " VERY EXPENSIVE".

Warmest regards
