“Good hotel, great location for exploring.”
Reviewed October 8, 2011

It was our last minute holiday at the end of season and Skiathos didn't disappoint, only 15 mins from town and 20 from the airport - right near bus stop 20 and 200m from the beach. Very clean, well maintained pool area, as the hotel says it was minimal and the rooms are small each of which had a balcony with a good view. Just a few little niggles, we ordered a double room and got twin beds pushed together and the beds were not very comfortable. To echo some of the other posts some of the staff were a bit hit and miss friendly wise but we put that down to " the end of season - we want to go home".

All in all it was well priced and over all good value in a great location with some fantastic eateries and a great clean beach very nearby. We will probably go to Skiathos again but not sure we would stay here again, but that really isn't down to the hotel overall just us wanting to try somewhere else.

Returned recently from a fantastic 2wks at the Astoria Hotel.
The only real negative we can think of is the unorganised breakfast area.Someone mentioned scrambled in a previous review I read and that is just what it is.
You had to lean over hot toasters to be able to reach plates and all the crockery, plates etc were in awkward places, causing queues and many comments from holiday makers.
It just needs reorganising and it will be fantastic because the food was great.Just one more negative the drinks in the hotel bar were really expensive and didn't compete with the prices in all the other bars.Would definitely return to this hotel and lovely Island again though.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the noisy kitchen area in the morning where you can hear plates clattering...

Myself and my partner stayed here for 1 week in September. We have to agree with a previous post and didn't find the staff very friendly. Maybe they were having an off week?? However this didnt really bother us.

The rooms are small but pleasant, with good lighting. It was great to have a must needed fridge. We paid 49 euros for the air con which we thought very expensive, but it was so hot outside it was necessary for us. Our balcony was nice and private but alot are not. There is no free wi-fi, it costs 3 euros an hour, which is poor.

We have to say, we hated the shower. The whole room got soaked. The shower head sprayed everywhere, but where it should have. We ended up just having to hold the shower head, so not ideal. The water pressure was awful. Virtually everytime we went to use the sink or shower the water would stop, and we would have to stand and wait for it to come back on. Very annoying. You will need to take your own hairdryer ladies as i dont think the one in the shower room would be any good. The room is too wet and steamy to dry your hair there. There is also nowhere to put anything.

The breakfast room is nice, but the breakfast area is badly laid out, and foodwise, there isnt much choice. Wasps were a problem when sitting outside.

The bar and pool area are clean and tidy. We did find it difficult to get a sunbed around the pool as there were not many. The garden area is walled off, which is a shame as more beds could be put there.

We would recommend the Nectar and Ambrosia restaurant (turn right outside the gates and left onto the main road, and around the bend) We would not recommend the Troulos Bay Hotel. The food was awful and the waiters arrogant. Worst meal of the holiday, and a waste of money.

There are some lovely walks to do in the area. We walked to stop 12 and then around the Kanapitsa peninsula. This was a long walk in the heat, it took us about 3 hours, you could just get the bus to stop 12 instead of walking to make it shorter. Another lovely walk was uphill too the cat and dog shelter, about 100 meters along the road is the Kounistra monastary. I think this took us a couple of hours. Another walk was too Koukounaries Beach, just following the road, about an hour. All the walks have stunning scenery. Its a beautiful island.

We booked the Astoria through Thomas Cook. Something they did (and Thomson too) is too put the luggage on a truck which arrives after you, at the hotel. It took two hours for us to get our cases! So we had to just sit around and wait for them instead of getting on with our holiday. We were told this is so we dont have to take the cases ourselves along a path to the hotel. Considering we had to carry them ourselves up 3 flights of stairs to our room, wheeling them along a straight path, wouldnt have been much more of a problem! Again when we left the hotel, on the last day we had to take our cases and put them at the gate for this truck to pick them up. Our cases left for the airport 3 hours before our coach came to pick us up!! When we got to the airport we had to retrieve them from a grassed area at the back of a cafe. In this day and age of airport security i dont think this a very good way of going on. Anyone could tamper or steal from your luggage.

If we ever went back to Skaithos i doubt we would go back to Troulos as it is quiet to the point of being dead at night. Plantanias looked more lively. The Astoria, although being quite nice, didn't really tick all our boxes so this alone wouldnt be enough to draw us back there.

Like the last posting,I have also stayed at the Astoria many times over the last 20 years or so,my family and I returned in June of this year after an 8 year gap,and apart from the upgrades to the rooms and bar area, nothing has changed, all of the staff are about as friendly as you could possibly be.
Nikos,Eleni,Christos and Manoli who own the hotel, and of course Harry behind the bar are like a second family to my family, and are without exception, the nicest, friendliest and most helpful people I have ever had the fortune of meeting, when we left to return home in June it was like saying goodbye to members of our own family.
I can only agree with the previous post that there must be something seriously wrong with people who find this place unfriendly, and I for one will advise anybody thinking of visiting this hotel to completely ignore the last negative comment and book your place, you will not be dissappointed!
All of my family will continue to stay at the Astoria when possible,it is like our second home, and if we had the money we would buy a property on this lovely island, just so we can see all of these lovely people more often.

Having stayed at the Astoria many times over almost 20 years there is almost no point in adding our views as the vast majority of comments from guests are very positive and speak for themselves.
However, it appears that someone feels that the " lady on reception " and the " gentleman behind the bar were " so unfriendly and unhelpful "
Having just returned from our usual excellent holiday at the Astoria I can assure anyone thinking of staying there to ignore completely the negative comments made and concentrate on all the positive ones. I happen to know exactly who the people referred to " on reception & bar " are, and you couldn't find more helpful or friendly people if you tried.
I have it on good authority that the " complainants " concerned actually only paid one visit to the bar in two weeks ! Obviously anyone is entitled to try the bar as often as they like but it does pose the question as to how you can manage to create an impression on someone in such a limited period of time.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I advise you try the Astoria some time ( all the positive comments can't be wrong ! ) and make up your own mind.
PS
We have already booked for next year !

We stayed at this hotel for 1 week during August 2011.
Upon arrival we were actually disappointed as we had clearly asked for double beds in the rooms and we had a positive reply confirmed in writing, but when we arrived, not only were the beds 2 double beds but we were also refused to be given double-bed rooms, as they claimed they did not have any available! Should they have told us this in the first place we might not have chosen the hotel. We found this to be kind of deceiving.

In general the hotel is ok, the rooms are renovated but not to a high standard and do not at all resemble the website! They were clean however and of a good size. The problem is with the shower though, which does not have any king of door and water was flowing out of the shower area!

The bar area is beautiful, but the pool is kind of old and not so nice, we never used it.

The breakfast area is beautiful as well, but the breakfast itself is very poor, not much of a selection, just basic staff.

Location is good, in the middle of the island thus convenient.

If I ever return to Skiathos I will only book this hotel if price is reasonably cheap as it is not worth much for the services it offers.

We've just returned from two weeks at the Astoria Hotel. The hotel was lovely; very modern, clean and central to the resort.
After reading previous reviews before we left for Skiathos, I was looking forward to meeting the friendly staff which so many people have commented on. How wrong we could be!! The lady on reception and the gentleman behind the bar were so unfriendly, and unhelpful. It really felt that they didnt care whether we were there or not to be honest!
The only exception to this was the cleaner - she was so friendly, and always had a smile for you and a "Kalimera" each morning.
It was such a shame, as the hotel really is beautiful. We wont stay here again, purely based on the welcome (or lack of) we received.
