We stayed from 18th - 25th September, our first holiday without our children now they are 18 & 21. The hotel exceeded all our expectations in most respects given the price.

By Greek standards everything was clean and worked well enough, but exchanging your passports for a tv remote control that will enable you to watch BBC World News in your room keep us amused for the whole holiday. cannot sleep? Watch this channel and you're guaranteed to nod off! The cooking facilities are basic, so prepare to eat out.

You visit this hotel for sunshine and location, not room amenities and it is not suitable for children over 11. The youngsters really seemed to enjoy the entertainment, ( daily face painting) and facilities and although the constant noise of both the bar and Thomson reps playing different music simultaneously was annoying you can live with it.

Our only complaint was that once "Katy Perry" burst into song from the entertainment suite at 7pm there was no let up until 11.30pm when the reps went home. Except for Sunday 23rd September when alcohol fueled "entertainment" went on until 3am and only ended when the hotel staff called the reps in to diffuse the situation. We enjoy a drink like anyone, but in a family resort there is no need for such behavior, luckily we headed off to the local restaurants each evening.

The wild dogs are very friendly and bark at the "looky looky" men, who are very easy to deter with a polite "no thank you".

We had a lovely time, a fantastic holiday for the ridiculously cheap price we paid.

Room Tip: Avoid anything with an 8 at the start! We stayed in room 801 above the "entertainment" and...

Just returned from one week at the Alykanas Village Hotel. We travelled with Thomson from Manchester with our six-month old little boy. We picked the hotel mainly for the location and also because we preferred to be self-catering. The location was perfect for us; a small, fairly quiet resort with lots of places to eat and a lovely sheltered beach. The beach is truly excellent and in September the sea was certainly much warmer than the hotel pools and crystal clear. 5 Euros will get you 2 sunbeds and an umbrella for the day. Our tip is to wander down the far side of the river and speak to Mr Kev. Within the resort the hotel entrance is only a few minutes walk to the numerous shops and restaurants. One of the best things about Alykanas was the restaurants. Whilst they might be fairly similar with hundreds of items on the menu; without exception they all offered excellent quality and value - you cannot go wrong. There are several supermarkets and these provide everything that you will need including all baby supplies if you run out (as we did). Again, these shops were all reasonably priced and we never felt that we were being ripped off (unusual on most holidays).
On the negative side, the hotel room was disappointing such as the bathroom with a poor shower, the drain in the middle of the floor and lack of hot water. Also, the staff were not particularly friendly. However, I would also have this attitude if I had to deal with the "Brits Abroad" at this hotel. This might also explain why the Thomson reps (now known as Holiday Advisors) were patronising and lacklustre. We will definitely go back to Zante but not to this hotel nor with Thomson again. Hire a villa or choose a small and friendly hotel.

Just returned from a one week stay at the Alykanas Village with my wife.

This is not a 4T (Thomson rating) hotel. It’s a standard 3* hotel. It’s important to say that upfront to manage expectations. When we booked 4T accommodation we expected more than we got from this hotel. That’s not to say it’s bad in any way, just that it’s not quite as luxurious as you’d expect.

Hotel and facilities

The hotel is clean and well maintained. The reception staff were not particularly welcoming or friendly on arrival. I was met with a here’s your key, take this remote control for the TV and return it when you depart. Throughout the visit they were not rude, but not exactly warm.

There are three main pools and activity pool for kids, all very good. We chose most days to sit around the pool nearest the sea. It was deeper and had a great view of the beach and access to the sea, also because of its depth there we fewer children by it. Every morning the pool areas were cleaned by staff, we had no problem in getting sun beds or umbrellas and in general the pools were really well maintained. The children’s activity pool looked great with slides and fountains, sadly I was a bit big to take advantage of those!

My biggest problem with the pool was not the hotel’s responsibility but the parents of young children swimming in the pools without appropriate nappies. In the first three days of our holiday the main pool was closed on three separate occasions due to ‘Captain Brown’. We knew when we booked the hotel it was a family hotel, but parents should take responsibility for their children. The pools were promptly cleaned and scrubbed, but this meant the pool was unavailable for guests for the best part of the day.

Previous reviewers have mentioned a number of dogs roaming the hotel and barking. We experienced this. Although we didn’t find them that annoying I can completely understand why some would find it irritating especially when trying to relax by the pool.

The pool snack bar was very good. Perfect for lunch, ice-cream or a beer. The Club Sandwich was particularly good and great for sharing. The on-site mini-market was also very good for basic provisions and the prices compared well to other shops outside of the hotel.

We didn’t drink in the main bar but it looked perfectly fine, wi-fi is available there as well if you ask for the passcode. We didn’t see any entertainment (through choice) so can’t offer any comment on that.

Room

The rooms are basic and clean but well-appointed with all the bits needed for a self-catering holiday. The fridge was cold, the beds were comfortable. We had a good balcony which overlooked the pool. The room was quiet. The only real issue with the room was the shower, which was intermittently scalding and freezing. There’s a TV in the room, our remote didn’t work and the TV was missing some buttons.

We went to the resort through Thomsons and were a bit annoyed that we had to pay extra for much needed air conditioning. It was 30 degrees most days, rather than charging an additional 50 euro for the A/C, why not build it into the cost of the holiday? You’re going to need it. The same goes with the safe which was 25 euro for the week. Most modern hotels now have digital, key free safes – please install them in this hotel.

Location

Good location in a quiet but friendly resort. It’s right on the beach and sea is gorgeous, often warmer than the pool. There are loads of small bars and great restaurants within walking distance and it’s only a short ride from the airport.

Overall

Good, basic hotel in a good location. Very good for families, not so much for couples.

Room Tip: Buy A/C, it's worth it. Bottom pool is probably the best of the pools with good access to the s...

We had a week here, and the experience was very mixed. It would be hard to find a better holiday for a young child – ours was in heaven. But the 'apartment', the 'entertainment' and the resort itself were way below our expectations.

Apparently the hotel is currently exclusively Thomson, so everyone staying here will have booked through them. According to Thomson's website, in Alykanas there is “nothing louder than the sound of the waves to disturb a light lunch al fresco”. Not in this hotel. When we arrived Queen's Greatest Hits was blaring out by the pool. It was really loud in our room with windows open, and audible even with windows doors & shutters closed. The snack bar has loud music playing all day too. Not audible from our room, but certainly enough "to disturb a light lunch al fresco” if you’re eating there. The pool entertainment is only between 10.30 and 4.30, but very loud music and quizzes made the main pools off limits for me. So much for the “laid-back family break” Thomson’s website promises. Mind you, although we talked to several other guests who felt the same way, the pool area was busy enough, so it obviously doesn’t put everyone off.

The resort is also pretty far from the description on the website. Alykanas is primarily a half-mile stretch of busy road packed with restaurants, bars and tourist tat shops, with more loud pumping music. Having said that, some of the restaurants there are very nice, and the people are great. Also worth noting that there are some wonderful places away from the main strip. Top two for us were Naraida (great to watch the sun set) and the Lemon Tree. There’s also an old village, a little distance away. We didn’t explore that, but it’s apparently far more picturesque. Also, the horse & cart rides are great fun.
Next the 'apartment'. On the plus side it was very clean. But apart from that, we were very disappointed. There's no living area except a tiny table in the (small) galley kitchen. We really wanted an area we could spend time together as a family, and where we could relax and spend time while the 3-year-old was asleep. No such luck. 2 bedrooms, a small kitchen with tiny seating area, a balcony which was only accessible through the 2nd bedroom (so useless when the little one was in bed) and a bathroom. Not the family friendly base we were hoping for. And the bathroom itself was poor too – broken tiles badly filled; stained toilet seat; corrosion on fittings; old & stained grouting etc. A previous reviewer also noted the hard bed – we had that too. Achy backs and uncomfortable night from an *extremely* hard mattress. As a previous reviewer said, the door had a certificate noting its official rating as 3 star. In UK it would probably be 2*, but for Greece 3* is fair. I have no idea how Thomson can justify selling it as 4*. I’m sure not every family would mind, but we did, and it was a real shame because it did noticeably affect our enjoyment of the holiday.

The upside is the absolutely superb facilities. Three pools (one of them happily away from the noisy daytime entertainments), a playground and, best of all, a wonderful splash park with 10 different water slides. Absolutely perfect for the little one. Also, the hotel is right on the beach, which can get a bit windy but is very shallow and is great for kids. The snack bar, blaring dodgy music aside, is great, and the crèche & kids club, reps, everyone else at the hotel was great.

The hotel room, atmosphere, and resort were a long way from what Thomson led us to believe, but we had a great time anyway. Would I recommend it – if you’re after a wonderful place for kids, and you don’t mind noisy entertainments and cramped accommodation, it would be very hard to find better. But don’t book this expecting a peaceful, get-away-from-it-all, 4-star hotel.

Room Tip: All a bit cramped; sea view rooms are the most sought after
