“Excellent resort and holiday!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2012

I travelled to Alykanas Village with my family - a 4 year old, 2 year old and husband on the 15 - 22 June 2012, and we loved it. We were giving a beautiful room No. 173 which had 2 double bedrooms and a double balcony which overlooked the sea. The kitchen facilities were good and consisted of a microwave grill oven, a small electric cooker, kettle etc and in the bedroom a decent hair dryer was provided The 4 pools were a perfect depth for my 4 year old, ranging from .25m to .70m. The baby pool and the park were brillant and my kids loved it, although the flooring became very slippery. Talking about flooring dont let your children walk with no shoes on when they have just gotten out of the pool - my daughter did and cut her toes on the paving and we weren't the only ones. There are dogs which wonder around the hotel grounds, but they were not noisey nor did the pester us when we were there. The beach is lovely and i would recommend taking a walk to Alykes, its only about 10/15 mins away along the beach front, but you will find bigger beaches along the way and the kids will enjoy the freedom. We did 2 trips while we were there - Simply Zante and the Pirates Playaway. Simply Zante was an all day trip, and my two children enjoyed it, the best part being the boat trip to see the blue caves. The second trip was a half day which we all enjoyed but to get to the ship we spent an hour in the coach travelling thru the winding roads of Zante which caused my children to be sick and a few adults to feel woozy - dont let this deter you but just be warned! The Thompson reps were all good with the kids, esp. Becky and Adie, and the Entertainment team did a good job entertaining the hotel guests. But the star of the show for my children was Thomson The Dog. We payed the extra 30 Euros to have a late room check out and was moved to room No. 805 - directly above reception, this was no where nice as our old room but met the need (this is the only block with a lift). Food - There was there was not enough variety of food for the children - nearly all the restaurants offered pizza, pasta and burgers for the children all with chips, we ended up ordering from the adult menu for them and sharing their meal! There is only one restaurant on the beach, but the food there is good, recommend what ever is on the spit. Apollos on the high street is good also as is Cosy Corner, Vagis and the restaurant in the hotel. We took a trip to the Lemon Tree - 5 Euros there and5 back on the horse and cart, where i had the Mousakka which was cold and not very nice at all. All in all the hotel was clean, staff were friendly and the surrounding area was beautiful and clean and i would recommend anyone with children to stay at this hotel.

I booked a weeks holiday to the Alykanas village through the Thomson website purely because it was a good price for the star rating. The flight from Gatwick to Zante (they call it Zakynthos) took 3 hours. The coach transfer took 40 minutes. First observation-this is a families/children's resort...if screaming kids running around scraping their trunki's along the floor will irritate you then don't go here! Check in was painless and I was allocated a lovely clean room in the pretty newly refurbished resort. There was a tv (2 channels in English), microwave, fridge, kettle and all the cooking/serving utensils you need for self catering.
Staff at the resort were friendly and the Thomson holiday reps are lively and keen to please too. There are 3 swimming pools (2 were particularly favoured by the loud screaming toddlers) and a fun looking crèche/kids club. The Thomson reps did a lot to keep the young ones entertained.

Rooms were cleaned daily and the hotel was generally clean though there were a lot of dogs which frequented the hotel, even the indoor parts. Staff seemed neither to encourage or discourage this.
There were not really enough loungers for everyone but this was partly because many guests reserved them with towels all day despite signs and advice to the contrary.
On site was a mini supermarket, and there were about 4 others within 5 minutes walk. There were lots of tavernas/bars/restaurants within 5 minutes of the resort (busters recommended if you want strong cocktails). There is free wifi in the hotel lobby but you must get the code for this from reception. Otherwise there is Internet available at cost, however many of the bars in the area offer free wifi/internet.
There are frequent sellers coming into the resort selling massages, watches, bracelets, DVDs and they'll often approach you if you sunbathing (for your information the Chinese ladies do 30 min massages from 20euros and many people seemed to have/enjoy these).
There's not a lot to do in the area (without a hire car to explore). Its a quieter resort for families rather than people in their 20's. Alykes is another resort 10 minutes walk away, but apart from that you need transport. Public buses run 4 times a day (1.70euros to Zante Town) but the buses are very unreliable (many times an hour late!). There is a gym in Alykes (opposite the iris bar).
Thomson offer many trips who can also be booked with local offices in the area (latter much cheaper) but most have more confidence in the more expensive trips booked with Thomson (your choice).
This hotel was a good price and a relaxing stay. If I had children I'd consider staying again, but without them the screaming kids everywhere did get a little too much to handle.

we stayed at the alykanas village from 11th may to 18th june.
the hotel its self is lovely. we had a ground floor room with 3 single beds and a kingsize just for the 2 of us! they provided a hairdryer and the tv was free and the balaconys were a good size. our room as at the rear of the hotel so was kept in the shade which was nice considering the 30+ degrees it was in the day in may! the safe was 25 euros for the week, bit expensive but a must have!
the pools were always clean, however was a massive struggle for sunbeds. some brits seem to think its their right to reserve beds all day then come back form a trip at 4 o'clock and take the towels off! very tempted to throw them in the pool!!
food was cheap and good standard and portion size. we had 2 burger and chips and 2 bottles of heinken and that came to 15euros so very reasonable.
the town of alykanas is quite small but has 20+ restuarants in and plenty of shops. because it was may a few werent open yet but we would recommend vagils and memories. meal for 2 out including 2 heiniken and a jug of rose was around 24 euros! bargain really.
short walk along the man made canal dwon the alykes which had more restaurants and shops and was slightly bigger so if you fancied a 10 minute stroll before dinner definatly venture down that way!
the hotel it self is very safe and secure and staff very friendly, especially the nice lady in the snack bar that runs in all day everyday by herself! lots of children attracted to this hotel. maybe it was the time of year, but being woken up at 2am by a screaming baby or 2 isnt our cup if tea so maybe and adult only trip next time.
we hired a moped in the middle of the week as we had a few cloudy days and it was only 20 euros for 24hours. we ventured up the mountains and seen some great views! the roads are very simple to navigate as they dont have traffic lights or roundabouts so all roads are failry straight and lead form one town the next!
all in all a great holiday!!

Room Tip: if you want a shady out of the way room try and ask for block 7. we had 754 and it was very big and...

Had a great holiday this year at the Alykanas Village. Reps and entertainment team were great. We were lucky with the weather and was 30 degrees most days Beach great for kids as it is a stones throw from the apartments and the water is so shallow and goes out for miles! My children of 3 4 and 6 loved the beach and the hotels new water park. It was fantastic and would go back there just for those two reasons. The dogs mentioned in other reviews are not that bad and if yoU leave them alone they wont bother you. They were just as much on the beach as they were in the hotel. Cats are even wandering around the resteraunts in the towns, the animal thing is a greek problem not the hotels. Do have a full English at the pool snack bar it is lovely and reasonable approx 5 euro, bout what you pay here for one. The hotel should really think of a resteraunt or keeping the snack bar open longer than 6pm. Do go to the Apollo resteraunt in Alykanas very reasonable, friendly and lovely food. It was clear that some updating had been done. Fresh paint new funiture, electrics, curtains and bedding etc. While the rooms were very clean a good size ( we had a studio that slept 5) and comfortable for 2 weeks, perhaps they should think about updating the bathrooms and kitchens. The only thing that really bugged me was an unpleasant smell most of the time in the main part of the hotel. Could have been cheaper than what we paid it was sc, we paid £2000 for the first 2 weeks in may for 5 of us. Would definatley take the kids back, they loved it and didnt want to come home. I would search for better deal or leave later to book. Zante is a lovely island and the people there are very friendly.

Room Tip: If you can be put in the blocks of apartments that would be better. We were in the main building and...

I reviewed this hotel last year. I was very disappointed with my room then, which was a 2 bedroom appartment. This year the holiday for 2 adults 1 child and baby was only £450, so I thought I would give it a go for that bargin price. I paid £1750 the year before.

I had a studio appartment this time with cot space. The room had been refurbished to an extent and was much lighter and the decoration was better than my experience last year. The bathrooms are still old and the hob would boil water after trying to cook pasta for an hour. The refurbishment is only bedding and superficial items. The kitchen equipment and bathrooms remain unchanged. I didnt even have a tin opener. However the room was much improved from last year but still not a 4 star.

The entertainment this year was much better. Last year only about 5 families would watch the evening entertainment as it was so poor. This year there was about 20 families watching the evening shows. The rep did a singing night one evening and it was very embarrassing as she couldnt sing. Other than that the kids enjoyed the shows and dancing with Thomson the dog.

The kids club and creche was brilliant as normal.

There is a new splash pool. So there are now 5 swimming pools. The splash pool is very new so not all of it was working but it looks really good, lots of slids and sprays.

This year I decided to go running everyday and explore the area. When you are about 15 mins inland you can see how much Greece has been effected by the financial problems. Loads of hotels, bars and shops are closed down. It looks as if it has happened so quicky its spooky. Swimming pools still have the sun loungers around them and lots of rubbish floating in the pools. Its like a horror film, really sad. The Greeks always appreciate your business where ever you go. We need to continue to holiday in the area or its will also go bust.

I would definatly recommend this hotel again. However things could still be improved. Even though its a family hotel there is no ramp access from the back of the hotel to the pools and your appartment, I had to walk around to the front of the hotel everyday as my pram cannot get up steps. The hotel also they you should not reserve sun loungers. There were much less sun loungers this year and if you didnt reserve your lounger at 8am, they you wouldnt get a bed. They should purchase more sun loungers are there is plenty of space to put them.

If my 3 month old son had not been teething this would have been a great holiday and if it had not rained for 3 days.

If the price is less than £1000 then I think the hotel is good value any more than this and you would be disappointed.

There is still only 1 cashpoint in the town and this is often empty. Take plenty of cash as the next cashpoint is about a 30 min walk to the next town.

Room Tip: I request a ground floor as I had a pram and I managed to get one.

The hotel has been refurbished and you can tell a lot of money has been spent on the rooms, all nicely decorated with new beds, furniture and curtains. The kitchen was small but functional for making snacks. It did have a new kettle but a very old microwave, but at least it had one which I was greatful for travelling with a baby. The bathroom was the worst part of our room it was dark and smelt terrible. We had a grate in the middle of the floor which kept overflowing. It was a shame really as the rest of th e apartment was lovely. We had a 2 bedroomed apartment which was big enough but there was no lounge area.

We paid for a highchair which was useless,as the tray didn't move so we had to feed our baby on our knee.

I thought the maid service was poor, they came either at lunch time or late in the afternoon. Our towels were never changed,we had to ask reception for clean ones. The floors were moppedt not swept despite sand everywhere. The maids also barged in without knocking.
We stayed in May and our room was freezing so much that we had to ask for a blanket, which was given immediately.

The complex is big, with lots of pools ideal for famillies, but they were very cold even baby section . Sadly there isn't anywhere near enough loungers, this isn't helped by Brits putting towels on them and disappearing for hours and taking the pins out of the umbrellas. This is a very family oriented hotel and if you enjoy activities this is a good choice. The reps don't force you to join in if you don't want and were very friendly. We didn't use any of the kids clubs but they looked good, shame that some parents were more bothered about reading than looking after their kids that ran riot round the pool .

All in all a good holiday in a good hotel helped by fabulous weather. Definitely good for children and good facillities in the room for babies

Fantastic place, great location and the staff are wonderful! perfect if you have kids 3 - 11 as the kids club is great however if your child is under 3 you have to pay for any creshe service (tho they are really lovely!)
Excursions are expencive and you must pay child price for 2 year olds and over where as most places in the town offer free spots for under 3 or 4 year olds.

Certainly would go again! (though be prepared to eat minimal fruit and veg unless you buy it for your room as the restaurent seems to not be aware of these other than french fries) but this is a tiiny issue compared to the great week we had!

Room Tip: request the view, we asked for a sea view and this was perfect for us! the noice from the evening en...
