“Excellent family holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2011

We have just returned on 30.5.11 from a one week stay at this complex having travelled with my son, daughter in law and two grandsons aged 16 months and 5 years. We would recommend this holiday to anyone with a family as everyone at the complex from the staff to the reps all work very hard to ensure you have a happy stay. The brochure description regarding the accommodation, the resort area and relaxed atmosphere is very accurate and the beach is so close you could touch it. The sea is very safe and the pools are fine. However, many people we spoke to had understood there was a splash pool for the little ones but this is not on site. Instead we had to hold him while he went in the pools, but this did not stop him enjoying himself. Nice park area on site which was well appreciated by all the children on holiday here. Our 5 year old made many friends and loved the beach, the sea, the trip to the cove/shipwreck. I would also mention as I have not come across this before that many local bars/restaurants have playground areas for the children which are safe and within view, which makes for a relaxing experience as they are happy to play whilst they wait for their meal and can then play afterwards . It was our first time to the island and we were looking for a quiet relaxing break and cannot fault the resort or the local people who made our stay excellent.
The only fault I would have to mention is that our studio room was big enough for 2 adults but if like my family you are booking with children I would advise you book a 2 bedroom apartment has the family room was quite cramped with 3 beds and a full size cot. I also felt that whilst the holiday village is classed as 4* by Thomsons which I believe is due to the facilities and beach location, I did feel that the rooms are ready for an update and the cleaning of the room was adequate at best, whilst the grounds and main area were spotless everyday. We were pleased that the price in the local supermarket on site and nearby were better than we expected and the food prices in all the bars and resturants we very reasonable. Plenty of choice for children and the local wine was excellent in price, far better than the prices we have paid elsewhere in Spain and Cyprus. Overall we would return and can see why so many on holiday were here on a 2nd and 3rd visit. ,

This is a super location for a family holiday. We are a family of 4, both children under 5. Just a nice distance on the aeroplane and then very family friendly when you get there. The resort is based in Alykanas, which is a small but gently bustling village with lots of friendly tavernas, all within a gentle stroll of the hotel. The scenery is lovely and the locals are delightful. This is not the place for a wild night out, making it ideal for families.

The hotel itself is a Thomson hotel and they have it just right. The setting is lovely and the hotel well kept. Not the most luxurious accomodation, but perfectly suffcient for a 2 week break and its certainly very clean. Don't expect much on the kitchen front as its basic enough to boil up some egss or heat some pasta sauce, but don't expect to be able to cook up a feast. We ate out nearly every night though (its not that expensive), so not a huge problem.

The hotel is set on a lovely beach, with nice clear shallow sea and sand perfect for little ones. Its also very close by to the toilets and snack bars, so not far to shuffle! There are 2 pools, the fun pool with all the entertainment and then the quiet pool for rekaxing. Something for everyone. There's also a super play park for the kids.

The kids club and hotel entertainment is ideal for the young ones (our eldest child wanted to go to kids club, and couldn't wait to get their each day), with Thomson the dog as the highlight of the day each evening at the disco.

We have been to this place twice now, both times in May. The weather can be a bit up and down during this time, but on the whole its lovely.

This is just a lovely lovely little holiday place, not at all tacky or in your face. Just do things at your pace.

Trips to recommend - Little land train which runs everyday and is about a 2 hour trip.

This was our second time here - first stayed last June and loved it.
We had a great room at the front with full sea view and it was kept spotlessly clean. The staff are really helpful and friendly. We mostly lazed by the pool and occasionally went onto the beach. Used the snack bar acoiuple of times for lunch (but have to admit I preferred the one next door at the Alykanas Beach Hotel - great Greek omelettes!). There is a handy shop on site for basics and the gardens and pools are really well maintained.
I think the Alykanas Village is great resort in a brilliant location - nice sandy beach and quiet village with loads of restaurants. Will definitely come back here. Would also add that I thought it was great value through Thomsons - actually slightly cheaper than last year (although we were 3 weeks earlier in the season this year).

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room in the block at the front

What can i say, my stay at Alykanas village hotel was absolutely fantastic and could not fault it for anything. The rooms were spotless and you had everything you needed when it came to preparing a meal. Our room was at the front of the hotel and we faced the big pool but could also see the sea . We had plenty of storage for clothes. In the room there was also a hair dryer..so no need to bring one. The staff were brilliant and they sure made our holiday more fun and exciting. Zeta and Sakis who worked at the pool bar were so friendly and helpful. Gloria the manager is a lovely lady and she managed to organise a booking at a restaurant when we requested some specific food that we couldn't find in other restaurants. The reps were brilliant with the children and always had different activities for them. Our 9 year old couldn't wait to go.
Every Wednesday at the hotel they had a Greek night, there was loads of dancing in the venue. Everyone got up and attempted to do Greek dancing. The atmosphere was amazing. We went out to restaurants and not once did we have a bad meal and usually it would cost 30 euro for a meal for three with drinks.
There are nice bars and restaurants on the strip and you can also take a horse and carriage and go to the other strip Alykes which was slightly a bit busier .There is also a train that takes you to a nice restaurant.
So overall I would recommend this holiday whether its with family, partner, friends or by yourself. I have only been back 4 days and I have already booked to go back in September but this time for 2 week and not 11 days because it wasn't enough for me!! Brilliant holiday, many thanks to the staff at Alykanas Village Hotel

We stayed at the Alykanas Village Hotel for 11 nights in May 2011 and greatly enjoyed our stay. We have two children under 3 and there was plenty for them to enjoy - splashing around in the child-friendly pools, building sand castles on the beach, and playing at the playground on site and soft play area.

The location of the hotel is ideal. It was really nice to be located on the beach and your entrance into the sea is nice and shallow and the sand is soft on your feet (although the beach itself is a bit pebbley). It's also only a short walk into Alykanas town and a bit longer walk (maybe 15 mins) into Alykes.

Unfortunately the resort itself of Alykanas (and Alykes) is really lacking in character and is just a long road lined with Brit-friendly tavernas and shops. It's set away from sea front so it's not very pretty and there's nothing much to see.

We hired a car for 3 days (it cost about 25 Euros a day including insurance) and would definitely recommend getting out and about and exploring Zante. It's a pretty island, with some nice coastal roads and views and you really need a car to see the best of it. We also really enjoyed taking a boat trip from St Nicholas to see the blue caves and shipwreck cove. You can do the same trip from Alykanas but it's a lot more expensive.

There are plenty of reasonable standard tavernas in Alykanas and Alykes but the one that stood head and shoulders above the rest for us is set apart on the main road from Alykanas to Alykes. I can't remember what it's called but it's different class to the other tavernas in the area and no more expensive.

Our room at the Alykanas Village was very clean and comfortable and just about gave us enough space for the 4 of us. It was certainly good value for money for the studio but if you needed more space and didn't mind paying a bit more you could opt for a 2 room apartment.

We had a lovely holiday at Alykanas Village and would strongly recommend the hotel. However, we wouldn't visit again because the resort doesn't really have anything to recommend it above other holiday resorts and with it being such a small island we were able to cover most of Zante in 3 days of hiring a car. All in all though, a great holiday that we all enjoyed!

I am shocked at reviews ive just read! We went for a week at beginning of May, myself and my husband and our children 9 and 6 aswell as our friends who were 2 other couples without children. Our friends both had lovely rooms facing the sea and beach pool which they were really pleased with and although we had a room facing the other direction towards bonkers and dilemma bar it was a bigger room which met our needs as a family. We all found that it was really really cheap to eat out and didnt spend nearly as much as we expected! Some of our favourite restaurants were Apollo and the Chinese/Indian restaurant and cosy corner for breakfast or an evening meal. Our favourite bars were Bonkers and Dilemma and the owners of these bars made us feel really welcome and accomodated us so well that we returned regularly throughout the week. We attended the Greek night at the Mill along the beach which was excellent and we would recommend it, they were also really friendly people. Our daughter Holly loved the kids club and went regularly and the staff were absolutely fantastic. There was a range of parties, face painting and fun activities to keep her entertained. Our son Nathan is severely autistic and the kids club staff were always asking if there was anything they could do to help and even let us hire some of their equipment such as a small ball pool to fill with water for him which was much appreciated. Alykansas tavernas have trampolines, bouncy castles, mini golf etc which is great for entertaining children. We went on one trip with Thomsons to the Smugglers Cove which we didnt really think was worth the money. We went on the horse and carriage along to Alykes as the Lemon Tree wasnt yet open but hopefully we will get to try that next year as we are definelty looking to return.

Where to Start ?

We booked this holiday because Thomson were advertising facilities for under threes, a splash park etc. They dont exist. Thomson are still advertising these facilities and they havent been built. Do not go if you have children under three, honestly, go somewhere else, there's nothing here for them.

We stayed in a ground floor apartment, sharing it with an ants nest, ants everywhere, even in the bed. The bath taps didnt work properly, you had to have the shower on permanently to fill a bath for the little one, despite reporting it, nothing got done. The plug on the sink was broken, so if you put it in, say to have a shave or a wash, you couldnt get it out again. The lights in bathroom were broken. The beds are like sleeping on Granite, seriously hard. The doors are single panel metal doors, and being a family resort, you will get roudy kids running about everywhere, it sounded like they were in the room, and the noise woke my little girl up every night, several times. My daughter's sandpit is wider than the beach outside the hotel, do not stay at this hotel if its lazing on the beach you want, you cant fit a sunbed on it and its all shail/pebbles. Go to Alykes instead, go to the sunloungers by the Asteria restaurant, speak with Vladimir and he will look after you very well with waiter service to your sun lounger, food drinks etc, and he will watch your bags while you take a dip in the sea. The beach is Sandy but has a vein of shail running through it at the water's edge. That said however theres a long shelf, you can walk out past this shail within ten feet, onto a sandy shelf that stretches for a hundred yards at a depth of no more than two feet before it drops off.

The reps are far too young to be at a family resort like this and indeed acted like it were they themselves on holiday on some sort of 18-30 Club outing.

Alan the 'senior rep', blatantly lied to us, he told us that all the scuba diving centres on the island were shut because, and I quote 'its too early in the season and they havent got the paperwork they need, sorted out yet'. In other words, 'I cant be bothered'. In actual fact, some of the dive centres had been open for three weeks and were crying out for trade. (Go to St Nicholas' Beach, south side of the Island - Fab people)

The Creche, DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR CHILDREN ! Honestly, with Madeline Mcann in the news again recently, you'de think Thomson, if they were going to put on creche facilities, they'de make 100% sure security would be paramount. We dropped our two year old off with the 'qualified staff', and walked away for our two hour break in the sunshine. Two minutes into our two hours, my wife spotted out little girl meandering amongst the people in the bar, she'd just ambled away from the creche staff and walked out.

The childrens entertainment is very 'butlins' and in my opinion aimed at the under fives, however at 8.30pm when Thomson in their infite wisdom, decide to start the entertainment, all of the under fives are either in bed, or on their way to bed. Oh yes, and part of this entertainment is face-painting, yes you heard me, face-painting at 8.30pm at night just before the little ones are due for bed.

There is little in the way of cooked food on the hotel gounds, just a small place inbetween the pools, the shop on 'campus' is a convenience shop and although Hannah is very nice, they are very expensive. Outside of the hotel there is a place called the 'Cosy Corner' run by Jules and Shorty, they do the best food on the island and relatively cheaply. If you cant live without an English Breakfast with proper bacon, go here. Proper tea too. Sad to say, the highlight of my holiday was having an English Breakfast.

Greece is no longer a cheap place to holiday, with the conversion of nearly a pound a euro and with the Greeks still thinking they can charge what they like, it is really expensive. You will pay £3.00 for a beer. £1.80 for a small coke, food is dear, dont expect to get an evening meal for three for less than £50.00.

To hire the safe in the room for a week, is £25. What a total rip off !

If I were going to come back to Zante, there's absolutely no way I'd go with Thomson, I'd book with Cosmos, I'd stay close to St Nicholas's beach, its the best beach area on the island, and its sheltered from the wind. A great bar right on the beach with brilliant music to suit all tastes drifting across the beach, clear blue ionian waters lapping at a white sandy beach without any rocks, pebble, rubble etc. A dive centre on the beach, and also other water sports, and I'd make sure I had two thousand pounds for spending money for a week.
