“Perfect Budget Holiday in a Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2011

After too many years of long haul and disappointing all inclusive holidays in overpriced hotels, this was bliss.

Very clean, very basic but comfortable 2 bedroom apartment, All the 2 bedroom apartments are at the rear of the complex. This is definitely where you want to be. Away from the loud late evening entertainment, albeit this is not every night.

The apartment was not fancy - two hotel bedroom style rooms and a small communal cooking area with just enough room for a table. But for the price paid - very decent value. Eqach room had its own spacious balcony.

Air con was essential and extremely effective - £30 per room per week. Room safe was a standard fee too.

If you prefer to snack without cooking, the snack bar on site is fairly priced and speedy service.

Plenty of minimarkets within 5 minutes of the hotel too. And very cheap souvlaki cafes - strongly recommend Oasis and Stonebridge for lunch.

What sells this destination is the no-frills, relaxed nature of the location. For once i was able to avoid long trousers for the entire week and stay casual. No pressure, no rigid AI regime. And it couldnt be in a better location - a narrow but lovely beach, shallow bathing, lots of sand. All in all, very family friendly (though as someone said, there were a few mooching pooches around which is something the region needs to control.)

Alykanas itself was charming - fine food, reasonable prices, lots of restaurant choice and very nice people. Coming here felt like a return to simpler happier holiday memories. It just felt....civilised.

Perhaps the most charming aspect of the tourist exerience was the local ban on taxis. At the rank you will instead find a host of ponies and traps who operate for a flat fee of 10 Euros, which is often subsidised by any restaurants you visist by this means. A treat? Maybe, but all i saw for the week was a slew of big grinning faces as people and their children passed by waving, heading out for a drink or a meal. I loved this aspect of the town.

To be fair, most places were reachable on foot, but in the heat...maybe not a great idea. Nearby Alykes is livelier and has a wider beach, no more than a 10 minutes on foot from Alykanas, but arriving by in Alykes by cart was fun .

Many others previously said, if you are prepared to blank out trivial annoyances you cannot fail to love this place. (Not thrilled by night flights and having to pay for an 8th night due to pickup times, but hey ho...they only charged 35 Euros for this)

I agree wholeheartedly with all the positive statements. Didn't eat at a single bad restaurant - Cosy Corner is a little more adventurous than others and was tasty. The Indian/Chinese was fine....better at indian than chinese. Dionisus was excellent as was the Lemon Tree......actually, we couldnt go wrong. Typical evening meal price for two, for most main courses with drinks was from 25 to 35 Euros.

Room Tip: if booking a studio insist on one facing outward. the entertainment is genuinely deafening in some i...

Myself and my husband visited Alykanas Beach early May at the begining of the season. It was very cold in the room on a night but blankets were provided. Nice large room with basic self catering facilities as you would expect. Pool was cold in May so never went for a dip, lots of sun loungers. Pool area was clean and tidy at all times, food at the pool bar was nice and a good variety. Great location right on the beach front with beautiful views and lovely canal area behind which was a small walk to the next resort. Both resorts were lovely with liots of bars and restaurants with a lot of variety for all. Horse and cart ride was lovely but very pricey for less than a 5 min ride I think about 10 Euro one way. We did go to a greek night along the beach on the right which was great value for money with nice food but after a while it did get a bit boring but lots of people enjoyed it. Only stayed a week and was really early on in the season so didn't venture very far but coulkd imagine in high season being a very busy resort so the hotel was ideal location not to far to walk to pubs etc but far enough away to avoid the noise. Ideal for couples and families.

Room Tip: If you like your sleep ask for a room away from the pool as music was played loudly until around 1am...

We have just returned from a 10 night stay at these apartments and have had a brilliant holiday. The apartments are spacious and cleaned every day, towels were changed every other day and the sheets changed twice during our stay. The bathroom was small and the floor floods when you have a shower but they provide a floor towel for this purpose and they were quite dark but lets face it who spends lots of time in the bathroom. The kitchen area is typically Greek (ie limited) with not much work surface for preparing food in the apartment, but the fridge was big enough for everything you could need. There is a lack of hot water between about 5pm and 7pm but we found a cooler shower to be a bit of a bonus after a day sunbathing in temperatures of mid to high 90s all the holiday (quite a lot hotter than normal for September according to many of the locals we spoke to).The air con was a must, we paid 35 euros for 9 nights (we tried to manage without but after the first night, gave in and purchased it!!!)All the staff were friendly. Bar and food prices were high but we went expecting this anyway with the state of the Euro: bottle of coke 2.30 euro, draught lager 3.30 euro for a pint. This place is spotless and well kept in all areas of the property, It's right on the beach with the loveliest clear water, gently sloping sand, you can walk a good 20 metres out and you will still only be chest deep (I'm 5'3"). No problems with sun beds, there are plenty, and you can take your sunbed onto the beach or onto the grassed area, they don't mind. There are about 6 dogs who hang around the complex, two who wear collars, the others appear to be strays, but they mostly just want to lie down next to you and only start barking when the "lucky lucky" men or the people offering massages come around. There's also a gorgeous cat who appears every now and then but she just strolls through the complex and we did feed her as she looked so skinny. Alykanas itself is lively with a good selection of bars, tavernas and restaurants: we ate dinner in the Apollo and went to the Bonkers Bar twice for an English breakfast and we rated both places highly. We also spent quite a bit of time in the Dilemma bar just next door to the apartments as they showed the rugby and football (as did most bars) and I couldn't keep my husband out! Just a short stroll along the coast is Alykes which is a bit livelier again with a good selection of places to eat and drink, we liked the Ambrosia restaurant which is above a bar on the main street, the Palm Tree bar and the restaurant across the road from this (can't remember its name). There are quite a few Horse taxis which operate between the 2 resorts and I agonised all our holiday whether to have a trip on one as I was concerned, wrongly, about the welfare of the horses, but after stroking a few whilst they were standing along the street and at their "terminus" just outside the complex, it was obvious that they were well cared for and were certainly never worked during the hottest part of the day but only appeared late afternoon. We paid 10 euros to travel from Alykes back to the apartments and loved it. We didn't spend much time on the complex at night but did see the male singer and he was good, also one of the karaoke sessions was a bit of a laugh, but we went out every night and usually got back after the entertainment had finished. We were in room 122 and overlooked the gardens (shame the fountain wasn't working), and did not find the bar too noisy. We got exactly what we wanted from this holiday. Its a very relaxed complex and came home well chilled. Would certainly go back.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for the first two weeks of September and really enjoyed our stay. It was exactly what we were looking for: a good standard of accommodation, right on the beach, close to lots of restaurants, and of course on a beautiful island. I would recommend this place and would definitely go back. Stop reading here if you're not fussy and just book it.

The Dogs. So, if you are staying in C block (furthest from reception) i suggest you buy some ear plugs or be prepared for very early wake-up calls (if any sleep at all). To get aircon in the rooms, it's an eyewatering 50 Euros per week which we wasn't prepared to pay, so we had to sleep with the doors open (or just the shutter). This block overlooks some kind of outhouse which has two or three dogs which bark non-stop and no-one seems to take responsibility. We ended up going to sleep with the balcony door open and accepting the fact we would be woken at 4am to get up and shut them.

As mentioned in some other reviews, there are quite a few wild dogs around the resort. Whilst these are really friendly, if you don't like dogs or have young children it may be quite off putting. Keep your belongings on the table - not on the floor! They also tend to 'guard' the hotel from the beach salesmen, barking whenever they go past, which some then retaliate to, which on two or three occasions resulted in heated exchanges of words between dog loving tourists and the salesmen. Amusing at first but tiresome after two-weeks. On the other hand, the dogs are entertainment in themselves, play fighting, getting on li-los and nicking your frisbee.

The hotel is in a great location - right on the beach, 5 minutes walk from Alykanas main road and 10 from Alykes. All areas were clean and pleasant, the bar staff are friendly (reception not so much and have limited english). Bar prices are pretty expensive (5 euros for some random vodka and mixer). Take advantage of the BOGOF Happy hour from 6.30-8 each evening. We didnt stick around for any of the entertainment, it was all pretty poor at first and was repeated each week (song lists being the same). As most reviews say, you can hear it from your rooms (with the doors open) but it stops at midnight - who goes to bed before then?!

The room was fine. Yes, sporadic hot water in the evenings but it's never freezing cold. The fridge and freezer is a life saver (freezing bottles of water overnight!). The maid is an absolute legend and was really friendly. My girlfriend wanted to take her home...

We sunbathed on the grass area next to the pool most days (very quiet and spacious) and was lucky enough to grab the big tables and parasols and drag two sunbeds over (free). The beach is amazing. Shallow for 50 metres, very warm and waves aren't too big, even when windy. Each day the wind picks up around 5PM for some reason, but it's welcoming as it was 34 degrees most days.

Alykanas main strip is great. Lots of restaurants and bars, one big supermarket, not too busy. Cuba bar has a massive pool table you can play for free. We went to the bakery each day and bought massive croissants. The veg/fruit shop is great too Alykes is slightly bigger but much the same. Beach was much busier up that end.

Trips. We went on three all with the same company. There's loads of choices of sellers (more then shops!) but all are pretty much the same price, however First Choice prices are ridiculous in comparison - god knows what they do different? (apart from markup!) The company we used was called Specialoffers.gr and is on the road as you walk out from Alykanas beach hotel up to the main strip. Unlike most of the other touts, theirs are their own (as opposed to selling you tickets onto massive boats owned by other people). They are all english, the tours a max of 40ish people and because they operate on Alykanas they only really get couples and families (other tours sell tickets in Laganas too which means you will end up on a boat with 400 chavs). We paid 7 Euros each for a trip into Zante town - well worth it, especially as you stop off at a tiny village high-up overlooking the town before descending.

The Shipwreck and Turtle trips were 20 Euros each and were also great. Shipwreck - great to see it, but ruined when a million people get carted off the big boats. Coach ride there is epic, through the mountains. Turtles - not worth it for the turtles (feels quite cruel) but you also get to go to amazing coves + swim as part of the trip.

Restaurants Top 5:
#1 - Fidelios (Alykes). 3 trips. Consistently great food, really friendly, amazing sirloin steaks. Paid for drinks until table was ready.
#2 - Lemon Tree (Old Alykanas). 1 trip. Bit of a walk to get here, but amazing setting and atmosphere. Food was great.
#3 - Paradosiako. (Right by canal on way to Alykes). 3 trips, but the final meal let it down. A rubbish 'ribeye' that wasnt and waiters that only care about shipping you in and out. But everything else i had was amazing...
#4 - Vrisakis (Alykanas) 1 trip. Doesn't look much but food was great, service friendly.
#5 - Cosy Corner (Alykanas). 3 trips but only for breakfast. Never had dinner here but breakfasts were great. Cheap. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Others:
- The Mill. 1 trip. Went to the Greek night. Great staff and the entertainment was good, but the food as part of the price was not worth it at all.
- Dionisos (Alykanas). 1 trip. Big pizza, very friendly, restaurant was full.
- El Nostino (Alykanas). 1 trip. Worst meal we had here, service was rubbish.
- Spartakos (Zante town). 1 trip. Great Meze, although we were both ill for 4 days after eating here, but apparently there was a virus going around...
- Numerous Gyros places - THE BEST!

Room Tip: Avoid C block if you want to stay away from dogs barking.

Just returned from a weeks holiday here. The hotel is in a great spot and quite impressive looking especially when the sun comes down. It is only a short walk away from numerous bars, shops and tavernas and the nearby town of Alykes which is much the same but slightly bigger.

I had read numerous reviews about this hotel and most were fairly accurate e.g. cold showers in the evening (which suited me fine after a day lying in the hot sun). However, I was surprised that there had been no mention of the number of dogs (around about 5 or 6) that appeared to have taken up residency at this hotel! I am an animal lover but I don't find it very relaxing when dogs are continually barking, copulating with each other and peeing over sunbeds! Maybe some people don't mind this but it was a bit of a put off and the staff didn't seem to have any concerns about it. If you are scared of dogs I would stay away from this place. That brings me to the only other negative...the staff. I found them all to be very dour, both at reception and at the bar. Because of this I spent as little time there in the evenings. I must say this is not a reflection on the majority of the locals who were friendly.

I would definitely recommend a holiday in Alykanas if you want something relaxing and quiet but would suggest the hotel needs to make certain improvements before I could recommend it.

Was there last 2 weeks July Fantastic. They just need to accommodate there own guests with sunbeds rather than allow any Tom Dick or Harry place towels there from other appartments at 7 am and walk away . Then there own guets come down at 9 am with kids and there is no places for them. I saw this myself as i put my towels down at 7 am but stayed there and read a book. I personally find if your not prepared to stay then dont leave towels.People book Alykanas Village and use the Beach Hotel facilities. Just shows how good it is.Great Staff great place and a cold shower is beautiful after a day in the sun. Hot showers need to be taken about 5 pm.

Room Tip: Paradise hotel pool for kids great walks on beach and beach 10 foot from pool

Stayed here last week in Aug first week Sept 2011. Room was cleaned daily and found everyone helpful and friendly. Over the years I have been to quite a few of these self catering types of places but this one was the best yet. Relaxed atmosphere, right on the beach. Not one for racing for the sunbeds in the morning but when I was ready to go to the beach usually around 10am there always seemed to be plenty of beds available at the poolside. I myself never used them because if we were not out exploring the island we had a beach day, 5 euro for 2 beds a table and a parasol was the going rate.

Room had a telly (Sky News only) the rest in Greek but that was all we needed. The one thing which i did notice was a nice big fridge that worked! loads of room for your water milk and Mythos, take some of those ice cube bags, we did and the ice compartment worked a treat, I know it is a small thing but you usually get something that cools things at best with an ice compartment that has either no door or is held in place with cardboard wedges, you know the sort of thing. True if you want a hot shower (Christ knows why you would) you need to be in before 4.30 pm ish, after that it is lukewarm or cold. We did have an issue for the last 3 days of our holiday with the water backing up the floor drain in the bathroom when showering (room 349) but that is continental plumbing for you, no end of complaining was going to fix it so we did not bother, it took a couple or minutes to drop down again and a couple more for the pong to go, more of a drain type smell than sewerage.

To sum up we found it very relaxing and a beautiful spot right on the beach, no issues with loud music and we were quite near the bar, you could hear it but certainly not enough to cause a problem it was off by midnight anyway. We would definately return to this hotel and resort as it was fantastic.

When we went it was 1.14 euro to the pound in the UK compared to 1.09 at the resort exchanges, if you use the ATM in the resort it was better @ 1.12 but you get a £2 or £3 charge by your bank ATM fee, so make sure you are drawing decent amounts at a time not dribs and drabs.

Get out and about and explore the island, some fantastic out of the way coves and beaches on the other side of the island, Limniosas and adjacent Porto Roxa were stand out for me. Don't quote me on the spelling but it was something like that. We hired a boat on the beach for 70 euros for the day (6 hours) and went to the Blue caves and around about, definately recommend this if you are a bit adventurous. We had a V.W. polo car for 2 days at a cost of 80 euro but gave it back and got a scooter for another 3 days at a cost of 45 euro (15 a day), this was the best and most fun way to get around the island we thought.

Room Tip: Get a higher floor room if you can as these are quieter.
