Enagron Ecotourism Village

We spent a weekend at Enagron with our two kids, for the second time. I must say we all enjoyed a lot our stay. Enagron is located in the middle of a valley near the village of Axos at Rethymno, far far away from the city noises. One thing you really enjoy is the fact that you don't hear a car engine. The feeling is like living in a small cretan village. Houses with big rooms with fireplace that most can accommodate a family with a couple of kids. Great hospitality, excellent food that mainly is produced by the owners. If you visit the place on the autumn You will have the chance to see the raki preparation, cheese preparation and other things that kids love.
The breakfast was good although I think some other Cretan food could be added.
One negative thing is that there are not many attractions for the kids who might be a little bored if you plan a long stay. It would be great if there was some kind of activities for them like archery or climbing, cycling, etc

this is a lovley hotel area. our room was fine. very clean. bathroom was good but no overhead shower in the bathroom so you have o learn how to use the shower without making evertyhing wet. housekeeping was every other day. they did not make the bed daily. towels are every other day. it is a lovely area but there is not much to do. the ride to town is on a VERY curvey road and takes 45 minutes. you really need to want to be remote to stay here. the food was very good at lunch and dinner. everything is fresh and prepared on site. no gym. internet only in the lobby. there is a pool but it is short, so if you want to do laps, you do alot to make up the length. you can hike around but you must do it early or late, as it is hot during the day. It is very nice if you want to be remote but i like being closer to the water in greece.

We recently spent a week in Enagron and had a wonderful time.

The setting is remote, and as other reviewers have pointed out, it pays to leave more time to make the journey than you would expect. We stayed overnight in Iraklion to avoid having to make the drive at night, and this proved to be a good decision. The road to Axos is narrow, winding, and steep in places. But in daylight, finding Enagron is not too difficult – follow the map to Anogeia, then on to Axos. From Axos, there are clear signs to Enagron every few hundred meters.

Once you finally manage to find Enagron, expect a warm welcome from Mary at reception. We arrived and were shown to our apartment and offered fresh cookies and a bottle of raki. Everyone we met at Enagron was warm, friendly, and helpful, and after a few days we began to feel like family.

On our visit, we noticed that there’s a big difference in spending a week (or more) versus just a few days. Those of us who spent the whole week ended up spending quite a lot of time socialising with one another (not surprising, as we would see one another every day at breakfast and dinner as well as during many of the organised activities) and this added a lot to the trip. Those who were only passing through for a night or two missed out on this camaraderie – although Enagron is big enough that there’s always plenty of privacy if that’s what you’re after.

Our apartment was spotlessly-clean and well-appointed, with a small kitchenette and a balcony overlooking the valley. The apartments are air-conditioned, although the buildings naturally stay quite cool during the day so we found we didn’t often need the air conditioning.

One of the highlights of our visit was the endless stream of wonderful food that came from the kitchen. Stauroula, the chef, makes a variety of dishes throughout the week as well as hosting occasional cooking courses for the guests, and from time-to-time she gave into requests for our favourites or sent us off with a plate of her home-made cookies to enjoy by the pool. The food is all locally-grown or locally-sourced, and it was the best food (and best value) that we had on our visit to Crete.

Overall, we had a fantastic stay and can’t wait until our next one. Enagron is definitely off the beaten path, a little remote and a different way to spend a holiday. But if you’re a fan of nature, passionate about wine & food, and interested in local traditions it’s a wonderful place to discover and relax for a week.

We have been to Enagron every summer for the last 7 years for a communication seminar delivered by my husband. Our group is normally 15-24 persons. We are staying 4-5 days each time. The place is beautiful, both the mountainous scenery and the complex of small houses in total harmony with the physical surroundings. The appartments are spacious, each with a private veranda/terrace. The food is delicious, traditional Cretan cuisine, most ingredients coming from the hotel's gardens (vegetables, some types of cheese, milk, home-made bread). The staff is very friendly, eager to help with whatever need might arise during your stay, they make you feel welcome and at home. The place is very quiet and peaceful, ideal for relaxation and enjoying the nature. Crete at its best!

I would agree with previous comments that this is not the easiest place to get to - but the drive is worth it. Make sure you travel in day time though. On arrival it was hard to know what to expect, but the most stunning setting appears out of the hillside, a collection of rural buildings amongst carefully tended gardens. We were greeted warmly at Reception and shown our mezzanine apartment, It was stylishly furnished, extremely clean and had a beautiful view from the two balconies. As it was so hot we quickly turned our attention to the pool, a very worthwhile facility. I would recommend that you stay for more than 2 nights to make the most of your stay. The cookery class was excellent, the food in the restaurant very good value with superb friendly staff, we cannot wait to return, in a 4X4 next time, if you like to be away from the crowds this is the place for you.

The location is beautiful if you can find it. There are no workable directions and it is a lot further from Iraklio and Reythmno than you think. The roads are harrowing and you can't really drive much faster than 40 or 50 KPH so it takes more like 1.5 hours from either town. The view from the room was amazing. The room was clean and I have no complaints there. The customer service was not good at all. I had to check out the night before we left because we had an early morning flight. Their Credit Card machine was broken so they could not run my credit card. I waited patiently for about 20 minutes while they tried to use it. Finally they told me I had to drive to the next town over to the ATM to get cash to pay them. I offered to allow them to make a copy of my card so they could run it the next day and they refused. Meanwhile it was now dark out and the mountain roads were not fun to drive in the daylight. So we set out for Annogeia to find the one ATM in the town. We made it back two hours later and paid to bill. I just feel that they could have handled this situation better and not made me spend my last night there driving instead of enjoying the location.
