“Best Pool in Molyvos”
Reviewed January 12, 2012

Having stayed here twice in the past 2 years, can honestly say, that the Marilena has the best pool and pool area in Molyvos (possibly on Lesvos) with fantastic views of the castle and mountains. Hotel a bit dated but Katerina and all the staff cannot do enough for you, they are friendly and helpful. Food here is very good and competivley priced, usually prepared by Katerina's Mum. Would recommend staying here as it is out of the hustle and bustle of the harbour and town (which are all within easy access, especially with the Marilena's free shuttle bus). If you want a nice, quiet, relaxing stay in the sun, this is the place for you. So much nicer than The Olive Press!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view in the block at the back (if you do not mind stairs)

Late deal and was adequate for a 1 week break. We were initially given a room in the rear block which was very poor to say the least. We couldn't lock the door. The owner, Katerina was very helpful and gave us a different room over reception which, as is the norm in Greece, was basic but much better.
Great views across to the castle and only 5.5 euros in a taxi from town back to the hotel.
Rather strange that the owners wanted to shut down as soon as possible on an evening and were then off down the road leaving the place unattended overnight.
Loved Molyvos, especially at night. Some very nice bars etc. Quite smart.
Did not see a football shirt all week!!

We went to the Marilena Hotel near Molyvos on Lesvos from 23rd September till 6th October 2011.

The weather for the whole fortnight was unprecedently brilliant with clear blue skies every day and temperatures between 25 and 35 C.

We were self catering, and were made to feel very welcome by Katherina and her family.

We had previously been to Lesvos (though not for 5 years) and only stayed at Anaxos, so this was our first time near Molyvos. The site of the hotel was absolutely brilliant for walking ( especially if you have Mike Maunder's book) and very close uphill were walks through the olive groves to Molyvos and Eftalou on the left, then slightly further uphill to Petra, past the reservoir, or also to Petri (more uphill!!!). Still a bit more uphill on the left was a walk to Vafios through the firing range - look out for the warning sign, and you need Greek or Mike Maunders to understand the black on yellow written notice, but the clear sign for ear-muffs required gives a clue.

At this time of year there were freely available figs on every road, and I've just discovered they're 59p each in Waitrose on 22nd October!. Some of the pomegranates were guarded by dogs or just out of reach, but worth fighting for.

Our balcony outside room 107 was shaded by a walnut tree, and some people may have found it dark, but we found it very cool and welcoming, and I don't now need to buy walnuts for Christmas.

The food available in the restaurant was very good basic Greek fare, and generally made by Katerina's mother, who was lovely, and used to run the o gatos taverna in town.

The free bus to town was brilliant, and ties up with the local buses to Petra, Anaxos and Eftalou, though at this time of year the service was curtailed twice in our fortnight, so we needed to either walk back or get a cab (freely available.

It was certainly worth walking to Petra and then Anaxos or getting a bus to Petra or Anaxos and then walking over the cliff to the gloriously swimmable Ambelia beach. Unhappily Anestis the donkey man we had met on our last visit had died, but the guys at George's Taverna (with the mermaid) on the beach were happy to accept our photos of Anestis chilling out and having a fag.

Because we had been to Lesvos before we didn't hire a car this time, but walked everywhere, but for a first timer it is certainly worth a car to get to Sigri for the glorious beach and terrapins, and also to Kalloni and Mytilene. Obviously Erissos is a must for Sappho enthusiasts!

It is a shame that First Choice/Thompson are pukking out of Lesvos, but if you can get a flight (possibly from Amsterdam) please try Katerina at the Marilena. We'd certainly go again.

My partner and I stayed at the 'Marilena' in early July. The rooms were quite basic, but clean. They weren't very private, though, being in pretty close proximity to other ones. The pool was large, and the surrounding area well kept. Looking towards town from the establishment, you could see great views of Molyvos castle on a hill, which is lit up at night. It is a good mile walk into the village, but the village itself is very picturesque, with some great bars and restaurants. I have been to many Greek Islands over the years, and this was my first visit to Lesvos. I generally prefer the smaller islands; as they tend to be more picturesque with friendlier people; but for a 'larger' island, this one is hard to beat. We loved it ! If I returned to Molyvos, I would; however; rather be a bit closer to the pleasant village.

Room Tip: One looking towards the town and castle.

We have recently returned from our two week stay at the Marilena. As always the family were welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room was cleaned daily fresh towels and bedding.. The pool is the largest on the island and there was never any trouble getting a sunbed. The food was freshly cooked daily and was excellant any typically Greek!! We have returned to the Marilena several times and every time we always have a fantastic time and will definatly be returning next year. Thank you Katherina for a great holiday.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very good but the back block of the apartments are good with great views of Molyvo...

We stayed at the Marilena in September 2011. We found the accommodation to be basic (Greek) but you soon adapt. The rooms are clean and the bedding and towels are changed regulary. The balcony was spacious although completly overshadowed by a huge fig tree! We personally enjoyed the privacy and shade although others didn't appreciate the lack of sun or views!

The pool was cleaned every morning and we had our pick of sun loungers every day. The pool bar was reasonably priced in comparison to the bars in Molyvos but all cans of soft drinks are 2 euros each. The food was great although we didn't eat there at evenings preferring to walk down to the harbour instead. The staff were more than happy to order a taxi for us as it is a 20 minute walk into the town and the hotel mini bus didn't run at times convient to us.

Molyvos itself is extremely pretty and comes to life at night. The cobbled streets take you back in time and it really is the most relaxing place we have been. We wouldn't hestiate to return to Molyvos although we would probably pick accommodation closer to town (purely for convenience).
