Marianthi Hotel, Studios & Apartments
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We arrived at Marianthi Paradise on 25th August for 2 weeks of chilling. We were welcomed by Vasillis on our arrival. And how friendly he was (the friendliest greek we've ever met and a great sense of humour!). I had e mailed the hotel before we went to request a higher room and overlooking the pool, castle and sea, and this is what we got. The room was typical greek, rather small and no way you could prepare food other than tea and cereals. This was fine for us (we don't go away to cook or spend much time in the room). Just worth mentioning that if the maid puts a spare toilet roll on top of your cabinet in the bathroom take it off as we nearly had a fire! The pool area and gardens were spotless, the bar area was also very good. I must mention the salads were very nice from here, I can't comment on any other food as this is all we had. We also inherited a small family of cats whilst there, Mum and 2 kittens. They were beautiful. Hopefully they will survive once the tourists leave? I have to say how refreshing it was to see how the locals were very tolerant of the cats and dogs. It seemed that every dog we saw was well fed and wearing a collar. This was good to see.

So onto the holiday, we hired a little scooter for the 2 weeks and found this to be great. It worked out to be around 10 euros per day and gave us the freedom of nipping here and there. We got it from Best which is just on the way into town. The town beach was a little crammed so we ended up going to Petra for our beach days. We found it much calmer just on the way in to Petra past the harbour. We used Coco's sunbeds which were free so long as you bought a drink or some food. This seems to be the case in most beach places. Dare I say that we didn't really think too much of Petra or Anaxos, they did seem to be purpose built? I know lots of people love these places and this is just our opinion, apologies, no offence intended. However we did like Molivos, it was much more traditional and has stunning views. The harbour area was a favourite of ours. We found a bar that did excellent cocktails for 5 euros and a wonderful taverna called Le grand bleu. Sounds french but isn't. We had the most beautiful mixed fish dish for 2 here. The main waiter was also very nice and not pushy at all. I wouldn't recommend The Sea Horse, food was rubbish. The Octopus was very nice, lovely whitebait! Another crap one was Mistral. We ordered seafood risotto and when it came it had prawns cut into 3 and a few mussels but with enough gloupy rice to feed 6. Not good. I have to say that I was really looking forward to the food in Lesvos but most of the time it was either just okay or a big disapointment. I have certainly had better food in other parts of Greece that I have visited. One more negative thing was the price of food and drink, again after reading lots of things on the forums I was expecting Lesvos to be a little bit cheaper than other places in Greece, however this is not the case, infact we found some things like their traditional food eg stifado and kleftico more expensive and were paying around 10 - 12 euros for these dishes. Back to the positives we visited Skala Sikiminias which is a beautiful little place with a small harbour and a few tavernas. So relaxing and peaceful. We were thrilled to watch a grandma and her 2 grandchildren fishing in the harbour, they were surrounded by the cats waiting for their dinner. It was a very greek scene. The castle is worth a visit, giving some wonderful views and interesting history. Eftalou wasn't really for us, the beach isn't the best and it was very windy when we were there. Over the 2 weeks we liked Molivos more and more. I wouldn't say it's my favourite, but it's up there. Go here if you want a chilled time with friendly locals and beautiful views.

Room Tip: Choose a room looking over the pool to the castle and out to sea

Very friendly proprietors with warm welcome and sense of humour. Nothing's to much trouble. Nicely presented apartments, good pool, tidy gardens and a fabulous view of the castle and town, ocean and mountains. A place to relax, take in the sun and sea and escape from the fast pace of life. One of the nicest places to spend time in molyvos. Try it for yourself you can walk into the village or pop to the local shop 15 minutes walk away. Have fun and enjoy. Great value for money so ticks all the boxes.

For our 6th year on the run we headed to Lesbos - thanks to FirstChoice and their Ratner moment by only going All Inclusive we had to find new accomodation. We settled on Marianthi Paradise as it is now called...as always its an eventful trip out and with the Aircon breaking down on the transfer we knew we were in for one of "those" holidays! Thankfully Thomas the rep let us have a beer stop on route whilst the driver fixed it - note to Thomas Cook, make this a regular feature please!
Arriving at the Marianthi (last drop off of course) we were met by Vasilis the owner, a character indeed! As a party of three he left us until last to put in a room - we were allowed to view two rooms before the wife and daughter picked one.
The room was typically Greek, and even with 3 of us in there it was still spacious. Kept clean by Katerina we can have no complaints...although the goats and their bell ringing activities took a night or 2 to get used to!
The Hotel wasn't full but as this left us plenty of sunbeds to choose from we weren't complaining - and being English we managed to have the same spot every day, complete with a majestic view over Molyvos (whats with this Mithymna thing? Even the Greeks call it Molyvos!) - slight moan, pool could do with an extra clean everynow and again.
Food was prepared by Sophia and with all their homegrown produce tasted superb. The Amstel was chilled and a laugh was always guaranteed with Vasilis.
The walk down to the village - or rather the Pergola bar, ideally placed for the first drink of the night - took 25 minutes at a slow and steady pace which is what you want!
We have only been back one day and have already been checking the price for next year!

Room Tip: send Vasllis an email a few weeks before you leave and request a room near the pool if your a couple

We love it here. It's the second time we've stayed here and I'm sure we'll stay again. It's not the poshest place in Molyvos. It's not the most conveniently situated in Molyvos. But it is, without doubt, the friendliest. it is, I'm sure, the most relaxed. The views are extraordinary. The service is super.Katerina, the maid, is charming. Vasillis, the owner, is hilarious. The place even smells great because of the lovely herbs that fill the flower beds.
If you are the kind of person that enjoys simple pleasures and nice people, you'll love it here.
We love it here !!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Don't choose the room on the 1st floor overlooking the pool. THAT'S OURS !!!!!!

Recently stayed at Marianthi Paradise for the second time in three years. Don't usually go back to the same place twice, but felt we had to go back for another visit. Certainly not disappointed. Everything we remembered and more besides. If you could bottle the views and take them home with you it would be wonderful. Vasilis and family give a wonderful welcome, and nothing is any trouble. The studios are typical Greek accomodation and kept spotlesly clean by Katerina. Clean towels every other day, clean sheets three times in two weeks etc. Have not had that kind of service elsewhere. Small bar with some wonderful homecooked food by Sophia, virtually everything is homegrown. The olives are to die for!! Easy walk into Molyvos, and a short taxi ride back if needed. I agree with previous comments that Thomas Cook do not do this little haven justice in their brochure, and we will be certainly going back for more visits. We would not think of staying anywhere else.

We spent two weeks inlate May/early June in a first floor studio at Marianthi Paradise. We had enjoyed a week there six years ago and decided to return. We found it the perfect place to relax and an excellent centre for walking using Mike Maunder's book. The setting is beautiful, on rising ground with views across Molyvos to the sea. The rooms are plain, but have everything that you need, and they are cleaned every day except Sunday, and the linen is changed every other day. The staff could not be more helpful. We particularly enjoyed sitting on our balcony of an evening sipping ouzo and watching the swallows dipping in the pool.

It is a short walk into Molyvos by the main road, or a slightly longer route that follows the unsurfaced tracks through the olive groves and farms (turn right out of the hotel then left at the first track on the left by the large house with coaches parked behind it and follow the signs). The restaurants in Molyvos are better than ever. Tropicana in the town square is superb, try the salt fish (pasta in Greek), artichokes and the beef stifado there. Go to O Gatos in the Agora for lamb chops and their octopus starter. A few doors down the hill is the wonderful former municipal cafe which has great food at reasonable prices - just ask what they have on the day. Betty's is also good for lamb kleftiko.

Recently returned from Marianthi Paradise in Molyvos. We stayed there 2 years ago and since then there have been many improvements with kettles, hairdryers, TV and free safe deposit box.
The rooms are spottless and the views are amazing. Vasili and his family make the holiday so special and nothing is to much trouble. The welcome is warmer than the weather and the weather is hot. There is no need to leave this paradise as the facilities and food on site are fantastic and eating in is a treat plus you dont have to walk to town. The walk is a good ten mins there and 20 back this may be due to the drink or the hill but taxis are available and the local supermarket will deliver your order for you, so everything is easy. Have already booked for next year. Thomas Cook undermarkets these appartments and the brochure does not do it the justice it deserves. Looking for Paradise go to Marianthi.
