We arrived at Marianthi Paradise on 25th August for 2 weeks of chilling. We were welcomed by Vasillis on our arrival. And how friendly he was (the friendliest greek we've ever met and a great sense of humour!). I had e mailed the hotel before we went to request a higher room and overlooking the pool, castle and sea, and this is what we got. The room was typical greek, rather small and no way you could prepare food other than tea and cereals. This was fine for us (we don't go away to cook or spend much time in the room). Just worth mentioning that if the maid puts a spare toilet roll on top of your cabinet in the bathroom take it off as we nearly had a fire! The pool area and gardens were spotless, the bar area was also very good. I must mention the salads were very nice from here, I can't comment on any other food as this is all we had. We also inherited a small family of cats whilst there, Mum and 2 kittens. They were beautiful. Hopefully they will survive once the tourists leave? I have to say how refreshing it was to see how the locals were very tolerant of the cats and dogs. It seemed that every dog we saw was well fed and wearing a collar. This was good to see.
So onto the holiday, we hired a little scooter for the 2 weeks and found this to be great. It worked out to be around 10 euros per day and gave us the freedom of nipping here and there. We got it from Best which is just on the way into town. The town beach was a little crammed so we ended up going to Petra for our beach days. We found it much calmer just on the way in to Petra past the harbour. We used Coco's sunbeds which were free so long as you bought a drink or some food. This seems to be the case in most beach places. Dare I say that we didn't really think too much of Petra or Anaxos, they did seem to be purpose built? I know lots of people love these places and this is just our opinion, apologies, no offence intended. However we did like Molivos, it was much more traditional and has stunning views. The harbour area was a favourite of ours. We found a bar that did excellent cocktails for 5 euros and a wonderful taverna called Le grand bleu. Sounds french but isn't. We had the most beautiful mixed fish dish for 2 here. The main waiter was also very nice and not pushy at all. I wouldn't recommend The Sea Horse, food was rubbish. The Octopus was very nice, lovely whitebait! Another crap one was Mistral. We ordered seafood risotto and when it came it had prawns cut into 3 and a few mussels but with enough gloupy rice to feed 6. Not good. I have to say that I was really looking forward to the food in Lesvos but most of the time it was either just okay or a big disapointment. I have certainly had better food in other parts of Greece that I have visited. One more negative thing was the price of food and drink, again after reading lots of things on the forums I was expecting Lesvos to be a little bit cheaper than other places in Greece, however this is not the case, infact we found some things like their traditional food eg stifado and kleftico more expensive and were paying around 10 - 12 euros for these dishes. Back to the positives we visited Skala Sikiminias which is a beautiful little place with a small harbour and a few tavernas. So relaxing and peaceful. We were thrilled to watch a grandma and her 2 grandchildren fishing in the harbour, they were surrounded by the cats waiting for their dinner. It was a very greek scene. The castle is worth a visit, giving some wonderful views and interesting history. Eftalou wasn't really for us, the beach isn't the best and it was very windy when we were there. Over the 2 weeks we liked Molivos more and more. I wouldn't say it's my favourite, but it's up there. Go here if you want a chilled time with friendly locals and beautiful views.
