“Stunning 12th C Monastery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2014

A grand piece of history beautifully restored. A fantastic place to get away. Meals were great and not overpriced considering the remoteness and 'captive market'. A pleasure to sit in the spaces and just relax.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your encouraging words about your stay with us.

Our level of service, customer satisfaction and indeed the whole experience of our guests is extremely important to us at the Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro (Gerês-Amares). For this we are glad to hear that our service and staff met with your standards.

Thank you for your kind comments about our restaurante which does indeed provide creative and sumptuous meals created by our Chef, Conceição Cunha and her team.

There are indeed so many activities one can do at the hotel (from learning more about Portuguese wines, taking a walk in the gardens, talking a swim in our marble pool and visiting the National Reservation Park - Peneda Gerês), as well as visiting the city of Braga.

We hope to have the pleasure of your company again soon.

Best regards,

Stayed in a one-bedroom suite on the 2nd floor. Separate living room was furnished a bit minimalistic. 2 separate, comfortable beds. Large windows which have to be closed to operate the very modern built-in blinds. Aircon didn’t work. Very impressive complex of buildings with large, sunny terrace and an inner courtyard right out of a movie set! Lots of space in common areas. Restaurant in magnificent large hall. Food was ok, but nothing special. Good wine recommendations. Staff very friendly, but at times a bit inefficient. Internet only in common areas and at times slow. Very quiet, except for church bells next door – and a repair started at 8:00 in the morning right below our window… Picturesque little village and wonderful mountains providing spectacular views. It’s a great location for walks and for relaxing.

Extraordinary place! This monistery was very well restored, has an awesome view and very friendly staff. If you enjoy quiteness, romance and being in sintony with nature, this is a great place to be. Don't forget to visit the Parque Nacional Peneda Gerês.

Room Tip: No Fitness Center, no SPA.

From the first sight of this hotel it takes your breath away. The large granite former monastery has a large amount of space, scattered with artworks in the public spaces and in the bedrooms. The view from our second floor room was breathtaking too, looking west towards the hills. The cloisters exude peace and contemplation. The food was wonderful. We were on a four day tour with a group so all meals were buffet style with loads of choice and all fresh and tasty. The ranks of puddings especially made an impression and encouraged un-monastic gluttony! We enjoyed the immaculately clean and well-appointed swimming pool ; although it was October we needed a refreshing swim. To be picky, the bedroom was too warm, as the window had to be closed before you could put the blind down. There was air con but it was noisy. If you did leave the window open the road being cobbled amplified the sounds of the small amount of traffic. Characterful sounds such as crowing cockerels and hooting owls were not unpleasant!

We have just had a 4 night stay here in room 222. On arriving in our room we were delighted with the views. The room was average. However we noticed ants on the bedside shelf and on the floor boards and proceeded to squash them and reported the problem at reception and on a subsequent night. Nothing was done and we had a return of the ants each evening. Finally on the last night there were hundreds of ants and we got a girl from reception to come up there and then. She said she had looked before and not seen them despite us leaving the dead bodies! She said they did not get ants on the 2nd floor but got some spray from another 2nd floor room! Her faced dropped when she saw how many ants there were and offered us another room but as we were checking out in the early hours of the next morning we just wanted to turn in. The spray did the job. Why could they not have done that when we first reported it? Very poor for this class of establishment.

The buffet food was also not up to standard and the waiters although pleasant and helpful did not replenish food at breakfast until too late in the service. We were not impressed with the Pestana management.

Beware of trips and a lack of handrails. Not good for the elderly or infirm.

Tips: The rear rooms are quieter as the front rooms get a lot of noise from the cobbled road.
For snacks and drinks try the "rustic" Cafe Mocambique just down the road - unbelievably cheap.

Room Tip: The rear rooms for peace & quiet. You can't sleep with the window open facing the road due t...

We arrived at the Pousada after a week walking in the Peneda - Geres national park, which incidentally we would thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting the area. It was nice to enjoy a bit of luxury after our exertions. Our room was comfortable, well laid out and well appointed. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, providing us with details of and the timetable for the bus we had to take to Braga the next day. We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon by the pool and then some refreshments in the cloisters of the old monastery. The building is of course stunning, particularly the hall where meals are taken. We only stayed for one night but in our experience breakfast was better than the evening meal, which we felt a bit over priced for what it was. However, overall a very good experience.
