This was a restaurant recommended to us by some locals – and it is in an enclave a little outside of Funchal. You know it is good as it was full of people from the area, plus a couple of tables of tourists.
This is the place to go for the local delicacy of “meat on sticks” as it is often translated. Fantastic home made garlic bread to start and home cured meats similar to Parma ham.
Then the main event – each table has a stand inserted into it that allows the kebabs to be hung, and then you slide the meat off onto your plate. We had chicken and beef and it was simple but delicious served with the house salad (best I have had in years) and chips (well we were on holiday). The waiter didn’t want us to have too much, and we just topped up our skewers as we required them.
If you are coming here – a few tips:
There is a lovely outside seating area, as well as a vine covered terrace to enjoy a drink – really lovely.
Finally if you have children, there is a play area upstairs, so it’s out of the sun, that you can see on screens in part of the indoor area of the restaurant.
Definitely worth the drive out of Funchal.
