“A local favourate - worth a visit”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

This was a restaurant recommended to us by some locals – and it is in an enclave a little outside of Funchal. You know it is good as it was full of people from the area, plus a couple of tables of tourists.

This is the place to go for the local delicacy of “meat on sticks” as it is often translated. Fantastic home made garlic bread to start and home cured meats similar to Parma ham.

Then the main event – each table has a stand inserted into it that allows the kebabs to be hung, and then you slide the meat off onto your plate. We had chicken and beef and it was simple but delicious served with the house salad (best I have had in years) and chips (well we were on holiday). The waiter didn’t want us to have too much, and we just topped up our skewers as we required them.

If you are coming here – a few tips:

There is a lovely outside seating area, as well as a vine covered terrace to enjoy a drink – really lovely.

Finally if you have children, there is a play area upstairs, so it’s out of the sun, that you can see on screens in part of the indoor area of the restaurant.

Definitely worth the drive out of Funchal.

“Who doesn't love meat on a stick!”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

We heard about O Lagar from a helpful fellow at the place from which we rented our car. When asked what nearby restaurants he liked, he said that he didn`t dine in restaurants in Funchal, but could recommend a nice place farther out of town closer to where he lives. He named O Lagar as the place to dine. A nice mixture of local specialties especially scabbard fish and beef on a spit. The food was incredible and our waiter was amazing. We followed his recommendations and couldn't have been happier. We had sides of fried corn, sausage and cheese and garlic sweet potatoe bread. The scabbard fish or espada came with a salad, potatoes and veggies. The fish was lightly battered, fried with a banana on top. The meat on a spit or espetada was ceremoniously presented and hung from a pole in the middle of the table. The beef was of great quality and smothered in garlic. Every bite was a joy. We highly recommend this local gem!!

“A marvelous churrascaria”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

The atmosphere was comfortable, the service helpful and excellent, and the food divine. You must love meat, of course, but all the trimmings were there as well. Highly recommended especially for families.

“Top place for real Madeira Espetada”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

I've been going to this restaurant for the past 3 years and I still believe it's the best place for the Madeira Espetada.
The premisses keep getting better every year with better comfort, atmosphere and quality of service.
The meat is top class especially the "Lombo" espetada, which is slightly less tender but much more juicier and tastier than the "Filete" espetada.
Ask for all the side dishes, like french fries with garlic and oregano, fried corn and the wonderful salad, as well as the "Bolo do Caco" which is a traditional bread made of sweet potato and baked on a pan, served with garlic butter. Just amazing.
Wines are priced fairly and the choice is quite reasonable. They also keep their wines at the right temperature.
Avoid weekends at lunch time because of heavy client traffic. better go in the evening because of the heat.
