Description: Located in the heart of of Câmara de Lobos, the Vila do Peixe and Vila da Carne Restaurants overlook this picturesque fishing village and the most photographed bay in Madeira. Their modern warehouse design, using large glass panes to make the most of the spectacular views, makes them both welcoming and informal. Both offer an interior (with sliding glass panels to provide a real alfresco feeling for those balmy Madeiran days and nights), and an exterior terrace with large sun umbrellas, and customers are always able to choose their preferred ambiance. The Vila do Peixe reflects the best traditions of grilling the day's catch by the sea. Using only the freshest of fish, it is prepared in the simplest form (with rock salt and a little olive oil), and grilled over the open fire embers, with a finishing touch of infused olive oil (the house secret recipe). In addition, the Restaurant presents a restricted number of house specialties, such as shellfish rice, octopus rice, fish rice, rich bouillabaisse, a selection of Cataplanas and other Madeiran dishes. The Vila da Carne continues the tradition of the Madeira Espetada, using specially selected meat. Additionally, it offers, amongst others, pork ribs, pork on the skewer, chicken on the skewer, chicken piri-piri, Brasilian beef picanha with selected sauces and delicious sirloin and rump steaks, all grilled over the open fire embers. The restaurant also has a menu of Selected Meats that includes Iberian Pork and Lamb, a few house specialties (including Surf&Turf) and the renowned steak on the stone. Desserts are all homemade and traditional. Both esplanades are a wonderful place to enjoy an aperitif, and to taste the traditional village Ponchas, in what is, after all, a balcony over Câmara de Lobos CAPACITIES Vila do Peixe Vila da Carne Restaurant (interior): 180 people 150 people Terrace (exterior): 70 people 50 people Total capacity (interior & exterior): 250 people 200 people Welcome Drinks or Open Bars may be served in both esplanades.

Spent a week in Madeira , and this excellent restaurant was recommended by other guests at our hotel. There was no reason to leave our hotel where the food was excellent too ! But the idea of choosing your own fish, freshly caught and dining on the verandah overlooking a small harbour was very appealing !
As a smoker I try to find places where I can & this isn't an issue !
We made a reservation & were told what time the taxi (gratis !) would pick us up !
Whisked away, short ride through pretty Madeira, friendly greeting , chose parrot fish which was grilled over embers & totally delicious !
A truly lovely end to our holiday! They do serve steak for non-fish eaters but why would you want to pass on this ? They also have a sister restaurant that specialises in meat....! Very reasonably priced & good wine , too!

We, a family of three, were picked up from our hotel on the outskirts of Funchal by a pleasant driver, which was a plus point.

The restaurant itself is attractive, with good views over the harbour. We arrived at 1930, and it wasn't that busy and we ordered a starter (fish soup, good) and drinks. The service seemed a bit hesitant though but acceptable at that time.

We were pleased to see such a wonderful selection of fish available, and the owner (?) helped us choose. The fish is cooked over a wood fire and is expertly prepared but it is pricey (my turbot cost around 26 euros!).

The fish was very well cooked but the slow service deteriorated to a full stop after a while and we were effectively ignored by the waiting staff after finishing our fish. No one came to ask if we wanted a pudim, or coffee, and we had to grab a waiter to pay the bill, which came to about 95 euros for the three of us. Quite expensive!

A nice (free!) ride back to our hotel, during which the driver mentioned it had been a very busy night at the Vila. In summary - good fish and starters, decent side-dishes but poor service at a price. I'd hesitate to recommend the Vila, sadly. It could be great with better service...

Had the misfortune to eat here for lunch on a day trip to Camara De Lobos during my recent holiday in Funchal. It's actually a nice place inside with lovely views over the harbour, however both the fish soup and soup of the day were totally bland and lukewarm / almost cold. Service was appalling with untrained and clueless waiters. They even had the audacity to have a 2.20 Euro cover charge for entry and when we mafe it clrar we only wanted soup and a drink and not a full 3 course meal, the waiters became rude and uninterested. When we paid (30 Euro!!), the waiter didn't even acknowledge us or say thank you!! Avoid this place at call costs, simply awful!!

On the plus side, they pick you up from your hotel, the views of the harbour are great and on Wednesday they have folklore evening. Unfortunately the main reason for going there is for the restaurant. Everything that comes to your table whether ordered or not is charged. The fish dishes start at about 28 Euro a kilo, that means average price of you fish dish is 25 Euros plus you pay for any accompaniments. We had a starter, main course one glass of wine one beer and some unordered items and our bill was 82Euros. Was this value for money, definitely no. As an example we eat at the Forte in old town Funchal. We paid less than 40 Euros each for A 5 course meal, with wine with each course and more, five star food, and five star service, and might I Add no additional charges. You pay your money you take your chance!

Vila do Peixe and its sister restaurant Vila do Carne send a courtesy car if you cannot get to Camara do Lobos yourself which is such a treat. Then you choose your own fish from the kitchen. We have been here several times both this year and previously and it is one of our favourite places. The fish is so fresh and this time we also tried limpits as a shared starter. Certainly worth trying but we can highly recommend the parrot fish too and the grouper and dorada which we have eaten previously. Prices are comparable with other places and the view of the harbour from the window is just so peaceful and pretty. Not surprising Churchill visited Camara do Lobos to paint.
