We spent 10 wonderful days at Calhau Grande at the end of the summer 2011 and loved every minute of our stay. We are definitely going to come back!

When we arrived in Arco da Calheta, we were so happy to have rented a car, as Calhau Grande cottages are high up in the hills, with a stunning view over the Atlantic. Sofia welcomed us warmly, and led us to our cottage with a little private garden overlooking the Ocean. We were free to roam the gardens and harvest fruits and vegetables, and we had some caipirinhas with lime from the garden, a great experience.

Our time there was truly amazing - we had planned to hike every day, but since Calhau Grande was so relaxing, we just stayed there on some days, read and relaxed, swam in the beautiful and clean pool and cooked or had barbecues in our own garden. On the days that we did go out and enjoyed the island to the max, we were always happy to return to "our" cottage :)

After 10 days, we were incredibly relaxed and ready to go back to work.

We are definitely going to come back to this place!

The only (and I mean only) cons > typical Portuguese building, meaning it can get a little humid inside (but the style and loveliness of the cottage makes up for it!), no typical hotel bedding, meaning the bedding sometimes slides out and you find yourself underneath the bare cover instead of underneath the wonderful clean sheets.

We spent a few days in the "Tenda" cottage. The view is gorgious, the cottage itself and the gardens around it are super tasteful and the hosts super friendly. A place to chill and enjoy. The mattrass could be a bit more comfortable and the shower and bathroom tend to get steamy, but we were assured this will be taken care of shortly. Otherwise super recomendable place to stay!!

We spent a few nights in Sapateiro house and we enjoyed the place very much: A nice appartment on 2 floors, a nice terrace with ocean view to take our breakfast and flowers everywhere !
The place has a very good situation for doing hikes along the levadas of South madeira especially around Rabaçal and Porto Moniz: Wonderful landscapes in luxuriant vegetation with water everywhere ! We tested local restaurants around Calheta and appreciate a lot tle local cooking.
Thanks to Sofia for her warm and thoughtful welcome in french (your french is very good)
Sure we will come back to Madeira!

We stayed at Calhau Grande for 3 days, staying in the highest of the 3 houses, Tenda. The location is stunning and it was lovely to stay in a rural part of the island. There is a village shop 100 metres away for fresh crusty rolls for breakfast looking down over the sea and the supermarket is only 5 minutes drive at Calheta. Easy to drive up to Rabacal for the 25 Fontes levada walk. And very relaxing to lie on the balcony underneath the stars, listening to the frogs in the pond below. Sofia was very welcoming, bringing us home-grown fruit. Definitely a place to visit again.
