We were able to stop by this center during a tour we had on Sao Miguel. It was very interesting to hear about what they are doing to improve the Furnas Lake. They had a very modern setup, and their staff was enthusiastic about what they had to say. I would highly suggest a stop off at this venue for anyone who has an interest in Ecology.

The Furnas Monitarization and Investigation Center is a little out of the way of tourist trips and not YET mentioned in guidebooks (which is hopefully about to change) but really worth the visit. It explains how the wonderful feature of nature, Furnas lake, got polluted and damaged. The center has a nice and interesting (and mainly short!) exhibition about the lake and its surroundings and it also shows which are the endemic plant species they are trying to reintroduce and which are the invasive ones. On the top of all that, it is a welcome break from the trail to or from the Caldeiras or on your way to or from Furnas. After visiting the exhibition and seeing the interesting documentary (in Portuguese with English, Swedish and soon French subtitles) you can buy different things and/or get a coffee or tea and lounge on the terrace in the sun with a gorgeous view on the lake. You can also enjoy the architecture of the building which is very interesting and the bathrooms - so clean and well-kept! The staff is really nice and most of them speak very good English. It was a revelation and I am happy to have seen it! I will recommend it to whoever goes to Furnas.

This is a new scientific centre on the edge of Furnas Lake. The fragile ecological system of the lake and its surroundings have been damaged by excessive use of artificial fertilisers following the growth of dairy farming in its catchment area. The young and enthusiastic staff of the centre explain the problem and the work being done to correct the balance of nutrients in the lake. This is most interesting to learn about and has a message for us all. The building and exhibits are very attractive and are situated in a pleasant woodland area on the south side of the lake.

We were walking around the lake at Furnas and came across this strange looking building by chance. It turned out to be a research center complete with an informative display for visitors. The staff were very friendly (and helpful) indeed. We saw an interesting documentary (reading the english subtitles) and were surprised to learn about the steady decline of the lake and the recent efforts to restore and improve it. Should you be walking around the lake then I can recommend this stop as a worthwhile break.

We enjoyed it but we thought it was going to be about the monitoring of volcanic/seismic activity. It was about the Azorean environment on the surface. This was very interesting though because we thought the Lagoa Furnas was desolate due to minerals and did not realize it was due to environmental impacts. Inspired to be more ecological friendly. Neat building. VERY nice bathroom... :)
