It's so interesting to see how the people of Sao Miguel are becoming so conscious about what the effects of man are on the ecosystems and what they are doing to restore the balance. This project in Furnas is very ambitious as the long term goal is to restore the original ecosystem and to stop the "marshing"of their lake.
The visitor centre is a very modern and beautiful building built from local volcanic rock which constrasts very well with the natural surroundings. The explanations are very good and the personnel extremely friendly and helpful. You can feel their passion for this project. The visitor centre is a bit out of the way. You can reach it by car, or like I did, a 25 minute walk halfway around the lake starting at the Caldeiras.
entree is free but they ask for a voluntary donation of €2,50

We stumbled upon the Centre on the way to Furnas and were really pleased that we decided to stop and investigate. After about a ten minute stroll along the shore of Furnas Lake we came upon a large, modernistic, grey building which blended beautifully into the surroundings.
We were given a free explanatory tour by a very knowledgeable girl aided by interesting exhibits and high tech equipment which illustrated the work that has been done to improve the water quality and ecology of the lake and the surrounding run off areas.
This Centre and the work being done is well worth supporting by a visit.
