This restaurant is actually called 'O Alagoas' and is situated just on the outskirts of Santa Barbara de Nexe, a bustling, pretty and friendly village about 15 minutes north of Faro airport and twenty minutes from Quinta do Lago. It is family owned and run and has been the Algarve's hidden treasure for at least fifteen years.
The menu never changes and does not need to. Fish is a speciality and you can pick your own lobster from those in the tank. However, for those (like my husband and son) who do not like fish, the 'Espetada Mista' and/or black pork are amazing. The espetada is like a kebab but the sticks hang vertically from a special hanger I have never seen anywhere else. It consists of chicken, beef, black pork, sausages, all divided by slices of pepper and onion.
The puddings and cakes are stunning and are all made on the premises. It has also a well-renowned wine cellar and I know that at least one hotelier takes his team there for wine tastings.
The service is superb and the restaurant is pretty - not always the case for good restaurants in the Algarve. All the staff speak perfect English and the maitre de (son of the owner) will remember your last order and ask if you would like that again!
As an aside, for smokers (and I am not one) it is a haven as there is a smoking section which has all the vents and pumps required so that one is not aware of it. On football match nights, of course, this is the busiest section with Germans, Dutch, English and Portuguese all shouting at the televisions. That said, when the snooker finals were on in England, they changed the channel to snooker for my husband and son! What the Portuguese made of that, I do not know.
It is very reasonably priced. A two course meal for three, with wine, would probably cost about 60 euros, depending, obviously, on what you eat. As an example (and this is one of the cheaper dishes) chargrilled chicken and chips or salad is 7:50 euros and is superb.
