I have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel with my husband and our one year old and we can not think of one single thing to complain about! This place is a fantastic family resort and you will not be disappointed! From the second we checked-in we got really good vibes and this continued throughout our stay.
Staff - The staff are really friendly and genuinely make you feel welcome. They love kids and make a lovely fuss of them without being annoying. Every member of staff we encountered was professional and they have the whole hotel running like clockwork. The animation team are super and work sooooo hard. They do not hassle you to join in with anything but there enthusiasm is so infectious that even the older guests would join in with the special song/dance they do. You will see what I mean when you stay!
Hotel room - The whole hotel is spotlessly clean and our room was immaculate. The hotel is only 1 year old so everything still looks brand new. Our room was serviced everyday and looked like we had never been in when we returned from the pool each day.
Pool area - The hotel was fully booked when we stayed but the pool area never felt cramped. Ignore the sign about not reserving sunbeds. Everyone else does but dont do what one annoying family did and reserved 4 sunbeds first thing in the morning but didnt come to use them until after 4pm!! The pool area is really lovely. The swim-up bar and jacuzzi area are a great feature.
Food - The food is fantastic. The choice of food is unbelievable and of really good quality. We didnt bring any baby food for our one year old and managed to feed him all three meals plus snacks just from what was on offer on the buffets. We dined in the asian restaurant twice which made a nice change and again the food was excellent.
Like i said at the start, we can not think of one thing to complain about. We had a fantastic holiday and will be recommending it to everyone and we will no doubt go back again. It is very much a family resort but there were younger and older childless couples who we chatted to who were also having a great time and there is a second pool which is much quieter than the main pool where most of the people without kids relaxed. Anyone with anything negative to say about this place must be the hardest people in the world to please!

We stayed at the Riu Guarana in June and I must say the hotel was fabulous. I had read some earlier reviews of the hotel when it was opened in 2008 and was a little bit wary. I was totally impressed with eveything and to be honest couldnt fault a thing.

We stayed all-inclusive which was really worth whiile, All drinks and snacks as well as meals were included and were all to a good standard, although after a week things can get a bit the same, i think thats what you havet o remember when you stay all-inclusive. Food was always well cooked and we never had a bad meal. I would definately recommend the cocktails too.

Staff were very helpful an friendly and the entertainment was very much geared towards children. The staff do work hard with water aerobics, kids shows singing etc.

I would disagree with one review saying there wasnt much to do. The beach was literally a 5-10 minute walk down the main road from the hotel which was well worth a look. There were a few shops and bars too down there, but I would rather a quiet relaxing holiday than it overrun with tourists. There was also a flight of steps to a seclued beach to the other side of the hotel which was also worth a look.

Overall I would definately recommend this hotel, a very clean place, helpful staff, we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Stayed at this hotel on 31 May for 1 week with a girl friend. I booked 3 weeks before we went and paid £500 all inclusive. The hotel itself is very clean, 2 large swimming pools and about 3 different restaurants to eat in. 2 of the 3 require booking but we never experienced any problems. We only stayed a week but the food is very repeatitive. There isn't much to do outside the hotel but taxis can be ordered from the front desk into Albufeira. One thing to note you can get free bottles of water from the front desk reception, we weren't told this but found out half way through our holiday.

I booked this hotel because it was all inclusive (the euro being as it is) we normally stay in Thomson Gold Hotels (no kids) so thought that becuase it was the second week of June children would be in school. How wrong I was, my husband joked that he now knows all the makes of prams there were so many of them.

When we arrived at the hotel our room was not ready so we had to hang about for two hours, we went straight to the poolside bar where there were cocktails of every description all free of course. We were very pleased with our room 402 it overlooked the sea and tennis court and was spacious with plenty of room to hang clothes. I was also impressed with the ceiling fan (plus air conditioning) which was much needed as the temperatures were well into the 30's. The maid service was great we used to come back to our room and find swans made from towels and roses made from tissue paper.

There are 2 pools at this hotel the larger of the 2 seemed to be used by families and the smaller one by couples which suited us. The swim up bar in the larger pool was opened while we there, this also serves beer and cocktails plus soft drinks.

There were plenty of choices in the restaurant for all tastes, but as other reviewers have said it could become very repetitive. The service was excellent with plates being cleared from the tables very quickly and the staff were also very friendly. The snack bar opened at about 3pm every day, where they served beef burgers, pizza and hot dogs. In fact we seemed to be eating all day, hence the 7lbs weight gain (the food must be good). We took advantage of dining in the Asian restaurant and the Grill Restaurant both were very good and deserve a visit.

The entertainment well what can I say it was mainly geared for children.

The hotel invite you for a guided tour this will take you to the roof of the hotel for the panoramic view, the kitchen which is immaculate and behind the scenes with the entertainment staff, it is well worth doing.

A tip I received from a previous reviewer was to ask at reception for bottled water (1.5ltrs) this is included free of charge and you can have as many as you want. You can also pay 10 Euros deposit each for towels which can be changed as many times a day as you like.

To sum up, this hotel is superb for families and couples, hope you all enjoy as much as we did.

Just returned from a week at the Hotel Guarana and I must say that it was absolutely brilliant. The Hotel room was very adequate and cleaned (properly) every day. Towels changed daily and the sheets also changed on a regular basis. The safe and fridge were supplied without any extra payment. As we had family in the adjacent room I requested that the interconnecting doors be unlocked and a member of staff did this immediately. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We were greeted at every meal by the waiting staff and as soon as a course was finished our plates were removed without fuss and with the greatest courtesy. There was a very varied selection of food and it was prepared to a very high standard. The utensils, plates and glasses were immaculate. We have stayed at many all inclusive hotels and this ranks with the best. Even the afternoon snack bar selection of drinks, toasted sandwiches, chips, salad, fruit and cakes plus ice creams was excellent and far and away better than any other snack selection at other hotels. The swimming pools were good. The main pool must have been heated a tad because we found it acceptable wheareas we have been in some freezing pools before in Portugal. Take no notice of the sign about reserving sun beds because no one else does. Put towels down on the way in to breakfast! The entertainment team are absolutely wonderful. The children were well looked after and they loved the evening mini disco. Some of the shows after the kids mini disco were par for the course, take it or leave it, but there were plenty of bar staff on duty every night to cater well for all the guests requiring alcohol or coffee. The actual resort area is dull however the hotel makes up for this ten times over. It is easy to move around either by courtesy hotel transfer, taxi or bus. Going down to the beach via the stepped decking is a breeze and if you do not wish to go to this beach just walk down the road by the hotel to another section of beach, no steps. We thoroughly recommend this hotel and we are definitely going back.

Having recently returned from a wonderful week at the RIU.....hotel I
can thoroughly recommend this as one of the better all inclusive resorts
in the area.

The staff made us feel special from the moment we checked in with a welcome drink,
they gave us a great and on our anniversary we came back to our room to a bottle of champagne
and a fruit bowl which was a nice touch.

The quality of food was very high and all buffet dishes were freshly
cooked as required. All staff were extremely helpful and the hotel was
immaculately clean.

The pools were of a good size and there were more than enough sun beds
to go round (no German's booking sun beds with their towels!!)

The evening entertainment was fairly entertaining and more amusing than
we were expecting.

There is a fantastic beach within a short walk away, access to which is
down a beautiful wooden decking type stairway which has several large
seated landings, should you need a rest!

A superb time was had by all.

Firstly dont listen to moaners, they would moan if they won the lottery. The hotel was really good in every way except the night entertainment which was poor to say the least. The food was great and the staff where very nice in fact the best Thompson hotel we have been to and we have been to a lot. Really good value for a top class hotel. One point, dont book trips through the rep, they are half the price down the road at the booking office for the same trip company. which means someone is making a mint.
