“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

We were a little apprehensive about some of the reviews we read before we came away, but we found this hotel and resort to be fantastic, we will be back.
Why was I so impressed? well the hotel staff managers was at the welcome meetings, manager of all the departments in the hotel such as cleaning, maintenance, catering and the managing director was there. They were open to the customer and wanted to be approached if they was any problems with your holiday at the hotel, no hiding away as I have witnessed in the past with other hotel staff. All the staff was courteous and very well-mannered and cannot fault them in any way at all. The hotel was all inclusive and you did not have to pay extra for the room safe box, bottled water, gym, sauna, Jacuzzi etc.
The Tompson rep did not try to hard sell their excursions or the other facilities of the hotel like beauty parlour / spar where this was not free.
We enjoyed the food and there was a good selection, at the pool bar beer was self-serve from a tap or from the bar, there was never any queuing when getting a drink. The hotel provided a hotel tour where customers were shown the basement where all the services of the hotel run from, catering, maintenance, housekeeping, cleaning etc, what an operation over 250 staff, they truly had nothing to hide and this tour showed the customer that the hotel was being run properly, the catering and preparation of the food top notch, what an operation.
The beds are to some customers a bit on the hard side, mattress topers are available and fitted on request, just pop to reception and it will be done; this is offered to all customers at the welcome meeting so totally open about this.
The hotel is capable of holding 1250 persons and has 500 rooms, if I have any slight niggles it would be with the amount of people trying to get food at the same time, they are three restraints' but on occasion only one is open, this happened only once in our week stay, too many people trying to get food at the same time.

Went to this hotel on 2nd June for 2 weeks. Lovely hotel and pool areas, probably the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in, absolutely spotless. Animation team are good, some shows better than others. 1 professional act a week, which weren't the best to be honest. Bar staff were excellent, we received fantastic service all the time, they always remembered what drinks you wanted. The hotel management are always around the hotel, in the restaurant, bar etc something I've never seen anywhere else, it's nice to see them actually speaking to guests. There are a few downsides to this hotel however. The food is extremely repetitive, veal and pork everyday for lunch and dinner. The choice is extremely limited, the same pizzas, pasta and fish everyday too. It would be nice to have some variation, no one wants the same food every meal time. I also like to be able to choose where I sit at lunch and dinner but the head waiter in the restaurant is often very strict about where you sit, giving all the best tables to Portuguese and Spanish guests. The tables are also very close together in the restaurant, probably a couple of inches at most between you and the next table. Other things that let this hotel down are that there is only one bar at the pool during the day and one main bar at night which is way too small for the amount of guests, very difficult to get a seat at night time. During our first week it was lovely around the pool and you could easily get a sunbed, however the second week there were far more guests than sunbeds available. They had to bring out extra sunbeds one day which then meant the pool area was very cramped. I enjoyed my stay here overall but based on the lack of variety of food and the hotel pool and bar areas being too small for the amount of guests then I probably wouldn't stay here again. Riu cancun is a far better standard than this hotel and they charge almost the same price.

Well !
This was our first visit to Portugal but our fifth to a Riu hotel. Having stayed at the 4star Riu Tequila Mexico in Jan 2013 the difference was seen in the quality of drinks, entertainment and restaurants.
All I can think is that our American friends are far more demanding from us Europeans

On the massive plus side are the rooms, staff and quality of food .

Drinks are ok and if you ask for more alcohol they will give you more
No in room optics as with other Rius
The animation team try their best but of an evening not really that good
We tried the Asian restaurant which was absolutely superb. The main restaurant offers lots of variety and we sat outside for all our meals and the salad selection mmmmmm
The grill restaurant is a total disappointment with only really being an extension of the main restaurant No real steaks only small strips with hard jacket potatoes and then the rest of what is on offer in the main restaurant

This may sound as if we would not recommend but I would. If this was our first visit to Riu we would not be comparing

My views really are taken on my expectation of other Riu hotels and should not worry anyone
The hotel is spotless, friendly and the pool area great

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view if possible has have sun all day

Visited here for a week in spetember 2012 as the season was drawing to a close.
The hotel was spotless, the rooms were adequate and suited our needs.
Food was plentiful but as with most AI repetitive, drinks were ok and cold as required.
The staff were polite and nothing seemed too much trouble.
Yes the bed in the room was hard but I've since found out that you can ask for a mattress topper, as we are going back in 2013 I will request this prior to visiting.

All in all it suited our needs, hence the reason we will return.

We first came to this hotel last September and we enjoyed it so much that we booked again soon as we returned home. The hotel was as good as the first time, very clean, staff very friendly. The entertainment staff where very good worked very hard, long days but always had time to speak to you and help. Food very good but I would not go mad about the Asian restaurant.
There were not branded spirits in the bar but the last time we went they were available so i went to speak to the main director who said at the welcome meeting any problems come and see him. He told me that i was not RIU policy to serve branded spirits and they advertise in the brochure that they only serve locally produced spirits. I told him that when we were here last September they had branded spirits then and asked him why it had changed? I also told him that i found it very strange that this was RIU policy given the fact that i have stayed in over 20 RIU hotels and all of them serve branded spirits. He told me that during the peak times they do stock branded spirits because it costs more to stay at the hotel and they do it for good will gesture and he can only do what the RIU HQ tell him. I told him i paid a lot of money to stay there and i expect to be treated like everybody else. I was told it was out of his hands and that was that.
The longer we stayed at the hotel we started to find a few more little ways this hotel was saving money. E.G
Normally there are over 15 entertainment staff in a RIU club hotel here there are only 8.
No cava for breakfast here but always in other RIU club hotels it is there once a week. (Not that I have ever had any)
No fresh juice in the morning for breakfast
Only a few staff behind the bar so at the busy times you could wait up to ten minutes to get a drink.
You can only change your pool towels from 9 – 12
Had to wait to get into the restaurant on the busier days due to not enough staff clearing the tables and we had to wait for fresh food on numerous occasions.
This is a fantastic hotel and maybe I’m I little harsh but we pay that little bit extra to stay in a RIU hotel and expect better than this. We don’t have any children and prefer to go away outside the school holidays as it is cheaper and not as busy. I don’t expect though to treated differently because of this! Please don’t let your standards drop!!!!

Just returned from a week at this great hotel with my wife, and have to say what a great place to stay. Check in was a doddle must have taken all of 5 mins. we stayed on the 4th floor we didnt get a pool view but was very happy with what we did get. The room was very clean and cleaned daily to a high standard.i did have a couple of niggles with the room the beds were very hard and uncomfortable. We told them at reception at 7pm on the second night when we went back to our room at 11pm mattress toppers had been put on the beds and remade. They did help a lot but didnt make them perfect for us but i think the hotel did all they could and very fast.2nd the air con didnt seem to work but the ceiling fan kept us cool at night but was a little noisy
The hotel food was very good there was always plenty of choice sure it could be a little reptative, but i think most all inclusive are. you just have to try new stuff to overcome this.they do have a chinese restaraunt that has to be booked we booked twice as this food was excellent.
entertainment mmmmm what can i say. this needs to inprove the riu animation team do there best with there evening shows but i would have liked a little more than mimming to songs but having said that there poolside entertainment very good and they included everyone in it that wanted to be involved and left those that didnt alone.A little tip here, theres a set of wooden steps (alot of steps) that lead down to the beach to the rear of the hotel we found that if you walk down these steps it was hard work comming back up, so walk along the beach when you get to the bottom towards Olhos de Agua and walk back up through the town and stop at pinoquio`s bar have a drink and use there free wifi as you have to pay in the hotel.
i would deff visit this hotel again it had a few niggles but nothing that could spoil your holiday

Recently returned having been on our first visit to the Algarve. We Loved it. Beautiful hotel. Quiet resort. Just a few shops and local bars/restaurants within walking distance - should you have wanted a change from the hotel. Fantastic walk to beach/cove. Miles of lovely beaches to stroll. Hotel was excellent. Lovely staff, very helpful and welcoming. Room was lovely, overlooking the pools, so had the afternoon sun. Bed was a bit hard - so if you prefer something softer, ask for a "topper" for the mattress - made a big difference! Food was lovely, plenty of choice but it was pretty much the same every day. Tried the themed Asian restaurant, it made a pleasant change. Entertainment was ok. Mostly provided by the entertainment team, who worked enthusiastically and tirelessly. Pool and gardens are immaculate. We did notice the usual annoying sunbed saving, which the hotel say they don't allow, still happening. All in all a lovely weeks stay. Would definitely recommend if you want a quieter holiday.

Room Tip: Pool facing had the most sun. Road side were quieter and shady in the afternoons.
