A little gem hidden away, stunning beach, lovely walk up to the waterfall we can see why the 'hippys' live in the trees there, Long walk down but well worth it.

“A nightmare to get there but great place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

I don't think we took the best route to get there as it was a dirty road in the mountain but when we get there, and after 10 minutes walking, it is just... great. A beach in a gorge with a river with lots of green spots. Worth going.

Preveli Beach is a little beach at the end of the Preveli River ('Preveli' apparently means 'Big River'!). The valley on the sides of the river (before the Gorge becomes too steep) is filled with Date Palms (hence the nickname 'Palm Beach'), a recent re-plant flowing a big fire in 2010. The beach itself is more fine stones than soft sand, but it isn't uncomfortable and the water is good. Do explore the Palm forest behind (and not just to go to the toilet! There is a toilet at the Taverna anyway), because the little stream has a jacuzzi feature upstream that you may enjoy if you can stand the cold. At the back of the beach there is a little shack that serves as a Taverna, and there is a shower one end and a toilet the other end. Apparently you can steer your car down winding tracks from the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and then walk down a track that leads onto the beach through the Palm forest - but I don't think you'd bring your sunloungers and barbecues this route. Better to arrive on a motor boat from one of the neighbouring beaches where you get lovely views of the south Crete coastline.

“Great day trip”

We took a boat from the harbour in Plakias to Preveli Beach. Its about a 30 minute ride which was totally enjoyable. Preveli is beautiful and quite interesting with its Palm forest and mountainous landscape. There is a small taverna at the beach so you don't need to pack any food or drinks.
