We traveled to Crete in early June and rented a beautiful villa in the quaint village of Prines. Our arrival was late in the day so we did not have a chance to take in any of the village until the morning.
Refreshed and ready for a full day ahead we took a walk up the alley to the little bar. Our mission of the day was to try as many different beers as possible to find out which one would be our "beer of the week" Once we bought our selection we walked across the street to the square. Within 2 minutes Giannis came over with a beautiful plate of fresh food for us to sample. Feta, crackers, tomatoes and more. He introduced himself and we knew instantly that we had found a wonderful magical place. We thanked him for his warmth and went on our way.
This little bar became our place to go, first thing in the morning, most suppers and every evening we were there. The food was beyond good, fresh, full of flavour and plentiful Giannis on many occasions made us something special that wasn't on the menu and it was always fantastic. He told us about the history of Crete and their experience in the world war. He is one of the best hosts that we have ever experienced, making every visit one to remember and filling our lives with great memories. His trusting ways were refreshing in a world that most dont have any, he even let the guys take over the tavern for a few hours in the afternoon as we had got him up so early and he needed a nap!!! So funny! whilst there it was his birthday, we had just walked a gorge that day and were not in the mood for partying it up with the locals but it was impossible to get past the bustling square without being spotted. He instanlty started moving tables and making room for the 5 of us so that we could join in the festivities. well I should maybe not say more, however, after the many ouzo and raki shots and ridicously wonderful wine we rolled (well some of us) bak down the wrong street to our villa!!! Always such a fun time
saying goodbye to Giannis was like saying goodbye to one of our family members. He really is missed and we cannot wait to visit with him again. If you want excellent food, fantastic stories, real crete...then look no further,,,this is the place to go..
