Description: Giannikos Taverna is a traditional Cretan restaurant, a heritage from father to son throughout 3 generations, since 1880. The tradition that is bonded with the restaurant is well maintained until today. Enjoy a delicious meal, taste our local delicacies, enjoy your coffee or a refreshing drink under the shade of the trees of Prines square! All our dishes are homemade with virgin olive oil, fresh meat and vegetables from our farm. Just taste it!

We traveled to Crete in early June and rented a beautiful villa in the quaint village of Prines. Our arrival was late in the day so we did not have a chance to take in any of the village until the morning.
Refreshed and ready for a full day ahead we took a walk up the alley to the little bar. Our mission of the day was to try as many different beers as possible to find out which one would be our "beer of the week" Once we bought our selection we walked across the street to the square. Within 2 minutes Giannis came over with a beautiful plate of fresh food for us to sample. Feta, crackers, tomatoes and more. He introduced himself and we knew instantly that we had found a wonderful magical place. We thanked him for his warmth and went on our way.
This little bar became our place to go, first thing in the morning, most suppers and every evening we were there. The food was beyond good, fresh, full of flavour and plentiful Giannis on many occasions made us something special that wasn't on the menu and it was always fantastic. He told us about the history of Crete and their experience in the world war. He is one of the best hosts that we have ever experienced, making every visit one to remember and filling our lives with great memories. His trusting ways were refreshing in a world that most dont have any, he even let the guys take over the tavern for a few hours in the afternoon as we had got him up so early and he needed a nap!!! So funny! whilst there it was his birthday, we had just walked a gorge that day and were not in the mood for partying it up with the locals but it was impossible to get past the bustling square without being spotted. He instanlty started moving tables and making room for the 5 of us so that we could join in the festivities. well I should maybe not say more, however, after the many ouzo and raki shots and ridicously wonderful wine we rolled (well some of us) bak down the wrong street to our villa!!! Always such a fun time
saying goodbye to Giannis was like saying goodbye to one of our family members. He really is missed and we cannot wait to visit with him again. If you want excellent food, fantastic stories, real crete...then look no further,,,this is the place to go..

I don't think there is a more perfect embodiment of Cretan warmth and hospitality than at Giannikos in Prines. The dining experience captures the intimacy of a little village, good food and service of the most personable kind. Gianni has a knack of making everyone feel like they have known each pter for years, and conversing over a generously poured raki or two you are not going to want to go anywhere else or leave. Gianni should be some kind of ambassador for Prines, if more people knew about him and his restaurant, Prines would most likely attract more tourists than Rethymno.

We returned again this year on our weeks holiday in Crete. We were greeted like long lost friends. Food was really very, very good, freshly cooked, rustic and still very good value for money - different from some restaurants in Rethymnon . Our family of 7 were all very impressed again by the really good service, excellent food & the great warm welcome. We had all been looking forward to our return visits before and during our holiday. We ate several times here and we were not disappointed!

When we posted the first reviews for Giannikos last year we were surprised that the restaurant had not been reviewed before. I am now so pleased to see that more people have discovered this special place. We returned with our family this year, with the addition of our baby granddaughter- and what a wonderful welcome we were given ! We felt like old friends. The food was as good as we had remembered- really tasty and very good value for money. Cocktails, wine and raki were also great. However the best thing was the wonderful service and friendship of Giannis. He spends time with his customers, making them feel special. We returned several times to enjoy the food and hospitality, and hope to do so again next year.

Are you looking for a great Cretan get together experience? Then, your troubles are over! Giannikos is exactly what you would expect as a guest at a Greek friend's table. Home-cooked and barbeque meals, great wine and raki, and a friend for a host. That is, if the owner Giannis doesn't strike you as a good old friend from the beginning, you'll get up with a full stomach and a great new friend, anyway! Tasty Greek cuisine in friendly atmosphere and unparalleled personal service! Thanks for everything, Giannis!
