“Great Rustic Lodge”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

Our purpose of the stay at this lodge was birding and did our wish come true! Saw some amazing birds on the river trip and around the lodge. Jimmy was a great guide and knew his birds! The staff did their best to make sure our stay was pleasant. The food was abundant and good............tico at it's best. This is a remote lodge, so be prepared for the road.

Before leaving, we were not sure about whether to have this tour from Arenal as a day excursion, or to spend the night right in Caño Negro. No doubts now! If you have your own vehicle, I would highly recommend to overnight in Caño Negro. It is a good place to visit after or before Volcán Tenorio.

The Lodge itself is very convenient, with comfortable A/C rooms and excellent staff, who do their best to help and offer information. The gardens with swimming pool are lovely, a good place to start your birding experience before going on a boat tour.

At the time of our stay, in January, it was quiet, with 4 couples at the Lodge. We all had dinner there, and being good and with generous portions, we found it rather expensive. A la carte breakfast was also excellent.

We didn't book the Lodge boat Tour, instead we contacted the local Operators, a few minutes walk from the Lodge. You will get a private excursion at a much lower rate for just the two of you. We recommend Paraiso Tropical Caño Negro. We had one afternoon tour at 15h (excellent, with no other boat around) and a morning one at 07:30h. The sightings and surroundings were amazing, with lots of wildlife. We would rather recommend the north itinerary.

Although it is not easy to reach, do not hesitate to stay a couple of days at this Lodge while visiting Caño Negro.

Hola Dear Friend,
The Lodge Staff want to thank you for the beautiful review based on your recent stay at NATURAL LODGE CAÑO NEGRO, it help us to continue to grow and improve every day our service.
Regarding to the tours, we know that our rate tours are higher than some local companies, however we will like to explain you that the basically the difference, is because the Lodge will be liable in case of an eventuality with customers, paying policies of accident risks, as we know you will understand this increases the cost of operation. However the lodge has always been committed to the development of the village, where 95% of our employees are local and each tour are benefiting not only the employees and Lodge, also other local families.

Thanks again, we send you many blessing from all the Natural Lodge Caño Negro.

SIncerely,

The hotel property is nice. Rooms were clean. The beds weren't great but probably as comfortable as you'll get in this area. There was an issue were the shower smelled really bad.

The food was ok but not great. The restaurant staff very friendly but expect slow service since there is one server and one cook. In general, all the staff here is great.

When you visit here know that you are going to a remote area. There isn't a ton of excitement. Go here to relax not be entertained.

The tour of the wetlands arranged by the hotel was good but way overpriced. The guide (Jimmy) was great at pointing out birds but didn't speak english. Luckily we had some people with us that spoke english and spanish. The guide also pointed to the book a lot to identify birds. He didn't add much beyond that. Overall we saw tons of iguanas, about 10 different species of birds, a couple monkeys, and nice scenary.

Room Tip: They put people in rooms right next to each other. Since there are plenty of rooms you may want to...

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights in early November 2012. The grounds of this hotel are beautifully maintained. The rooms are located in several single story buildings spread out over the large property. We staying a room near the back of the property. It was very clean and quiet. We could here monkeys nearby. We heard an owl at night. Our room was simple but comfortable. We had a nice patio accessed by a sliding door with a couple chairs facing the pool and garden area.

The staff was friendly both in reception and the dining room. The package we booked included a boat trip into the wetland area. We saw over 60 species of birds in less than three hours. the place is an amazing location for birding. Even before we started the boat trip we enjoyed a small flock of orange-chinned parakeets and some Passerini's tanagers in one of the palms near the hotel driveway. The wildlife was great too. We saw a beautiful green basilisk lizard on the hotel grounds, many iguanas, howler monkeys, and many caymens.

Also, we also paid for a guided hike. I thought the price was too high for the hike we took. The guide did not speak english and so could not translate for us. Thankfully my boyfriend is bilingual and he translated for our group. We walked along the roads at the edge of the town near the lodge looking for birds for a little while and did see many great birds. We were then taken to a farm where we were introduced to the owners who gave us a tour and explained to us all of the changes and improvements they've made to become more sustainable. They have ponds where they raise tilapia, and are doing some interesting thing with the waste from the pigs they raise. At the back of the property they have a newer structure that has been built and they had a table of handmade jewelry using native natural materials for sale. We also strolled through an orange plantation that they let the fruit fall for wildlife and birds. We then went through a bit of forest and pastureland and circled back to the farmhouse. It was a nice walk and I was interested int he practices at the farm, but I wouldn't pay $40.00 per person to do it again. I think they should reconsider their price for this activity.

The meals and service in the dining room were very good. I enjoyed the food very much. If I were to come to this area again, I would stay at least three nights so as to have more time to explore the refuge area and to have a little more time to enjoy the hotel grounds and pool.

Just about 4 hours from San José, Caño Negro is a true wildlife refuge and the lodge is just 400 m away. I went with my girlfriend for 2 nights and had a great time, both the lodge and Caño Negro itself well exceeded our expectations. Nice clean rooms, great food, pool, and above all amazing staff, who would go completely out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Special mention to Ernesto (tour guide) who knows the area and wildlife perfectly, able to find and name any species and name it in english, spanish and its scientific name. As well as Edwin, (waiter, bartender, etc.) who is more than happy to have company during morning jog and makes sure guests don't miss a chance to brush with the locals by inviting them to whatever is going on in town, in case you feel like dancing on a saturday night. Bottom line, you'll have a full plate and a great time.

Room Tip: Far end rooms face the forest where spider monkeys come to feed.

Stayed here for one night and did the boat tour. The rooms aren't anything exceptional but they are clean and tidy with nice bathroom/shower. The restaurant food was good too and the pool was nice. They also have small turtle pond with fish and turtles that were fun for my 1 year old son.
We did the boat trip one morning and it is a must. The guide, Ernesto, was great. Speaks excellent English and was great at pointing out all the birds, caymans, iguanas, turtles and more. He would even maneuver the boat to make sure everyone got great shots on cameras. Highly recommend tour and stay in the region!
