Hotel Pedacito de Cielo is what it says. A little piece of heaven.
I came here for the third time and everytime I am wondered about the peace
of this place. From you balcony you have a view over the river San Carlos.
The owner Don Marcos, is one of the best cooks in Costa Rica. Everyday he suprised us with
a great breakfast, lunch and dinner. You don´t have a choice on your meal. But his choice is really great. His masters choice. The rooms, a kind of bungalows are made of materials from the region. The amount of different birds you can see in the garden is incredable.
The walk with Hugo through their own reserve is beautiful. Hugo don´t speaks English, but you will understand everything he explanes.
Also we made the rivercruise to the border with Nicaragua. Many birds, lizzards and crocodiles. We had for the third time a great experience. We will go back one day.

Pedacito de Cielo is an eco-lodge in a beautiful, but really remote location. The lodge itself is indeed heavenly, with lots of wood in the design. You have to be a fan of the eco-experience though. Bring your deet, because the only way to keep the insects out is to crawl into bed under the mosquito net. That would be a shame of course, because the rooms have balconies where you can relax in hanging chairs while watching the river below or the colibries in the flower bushes. The dining room is out in the open too; you can watch the lizards on the wooden beams and ceiling. The food is excellent, amongst the best we've had in Costa Rica. Why I didn't give this the maximum rating: because the bed was a bit too small (as was the mosquito net!) and we had some problems with our shower and because on our outing to the nearby reserve they got us a guide who only spoke Spanish (while we had made it clear we spoke hardly any). So it wasn't perfect, but in general, the staff were really nice and always ready to make our stay as comfortable as they could. If the description intrigues you, I would definitely recommend making the difficult trip to spend a couple of nights at the Pedacito de Cielo.

The road to get there is a real mess but isn´t the road to heaven always stony?

The Lodge is amazing. The tours in the jungle and on the river are much better than in the rest of Costa Rica and the food in the lodge is very very good.

Sitting on the terrace of the restaurant or in the the monkey swings of every room=house and watching birds, big Leguans, enormous Butterflies and drinking a glass of excelent wine...you really feel in Heaven.
No Phone, no Internet, no TV: incredibly relaxing.

If you can: go there!

This beautiful eco-lodge is just amazing. We stayed for 5 nights in January at the start of our holiday. For me, everything about this place was perfect. It's over 30km down a rough pot-holed road, but don't let this put you off because it's well worth it and the sights and river views on the way are stunning.

A lot of thought has gone into everything here, the design and layout of the bungalows and the furniture, the tropical gardens, the food, the activities available. Even the bar fridge here gets the beer colder than I've had it anywhere else!

The food is of an incredibly high standard, and very good value. I don't drink coffee but my boyfriend does and he said the coffee here was the best he's had ever. The rest of breakfast was equally as good. Limited choice for lunch, either spaghetti, or a club sandwich, although I'm sure it could be varied if you asked, but we found it so good that we were happy with one of those everyday.

Dinner was always really good, usually starting with a really nice homemade soup, we had chicken breast stuffed with vegetables one night, a large fillet of fish another, a perfectly cooked steak one night and a large, thick pork steak on the last night which was incredible. All served with potatoes or rice, vegetables and a salad. There is no menu, Marco cooks a different meal each night and all guests are served that. I'm sure if you had any special requests or are a vegetarian that could be accommodated though. We have since travelled about in Costa Rica, and in many places have paid much more for meals that came nowhere near to the quality of the meals here.

The restaurant itself overlooks the river and it's nice to just sit on the balcony here and watch the birds and wildlife. At breakfast time there are loads of parrots and tanagers, woodpeckers and oropendolas around, at lunchtime there are usually loads of large iguanas lazing about in the trees and on the roof of the restaurant. We even had a humming bird that came to visit us a few times a day on the balcony of our bungalow, he seemed as interested in watching us and we were in watching him!

Marco, the owner and chef, and his family and staff are lovely and really friendly and helpful. He only really speaks Spanish, but communication was never a problem and my Spanish really improved while I was here.

The first day we walked down the road to the lagoon, which is part of the lodge's reserve. It's very beautiful and tranquil, and we saw loads of birds. The next day we had a guided tour of the reserve, which is a 2km walk away, but even on the road on the way there we saw monkeys, birds of prey and Great Green Macaws (which is the reason we chose this particular area to visit in the first place). We later saw 3 Great Greens sitting preening and squabbling in a tree in the reserve and were able to watch them for quite a while. Hugo the guide is brilliant, and again although he speaks no Spanish, it's not a problem at all. He has field guides, so you can see the English and Latin names for everything you see and he's very enthusiastic.

We did a kayak trip down the river with him the next day and we saw more Macaws, both Scarlet and Great Green (in fact you hear them all the time at the lodge and often see Scarlets flying over the river), we also saw Toucans, turtles, a crocodile and loads of other birds.

Overall, a really stunning Eco-lodge, with gorgeous bungalows, amazing food and hospitality, and set in a really beautiful, remote and peaceful setting. I even preferred the reserve here to Corcovado National Park.

This is a family run Lodge on the river San Carlos, a really well run place. Idillic above the river. The cabin we stayed in was directly above the river, the swinging chairs on the balcony were great to relax in and just look at the fantastic scenery. The rainforest is all around you, the sounds from the howling monkeys and the birds/insects are amazing. The hiking into the forest and the trip on the river were really well run and very enjoyable. The owner does the cooking which is really, really good. We will visit again, the family welcomed us with open arms a great place.
