“A shinning haven in naturally wild moorland”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

On our Coast to Coast walk from Kirkby Stephen to keld. Any visitor here is bound to astounded as this accommodation has the WOW factor. We missed the farm and wandered towards Keld, me spoke with a Farmer to find directs - he said "there are two options - go up hill for 2 miles or down hill for 2 miles - go to the pub and Gary will come and pick you up" - Well the Beer in the Pub was very welcome and at 4pm Gary arrived. A large man - large voice with large strong hand shake - he greeted us as though we were long awaited family. He drove us to his home - a ruin of a building that he has crafted into One up and One down Guest accommodation with his domestic accommodation on the side - magical! When we arrived we were greeted by Cathrine, Gary's wife. She was absolutely lovely and very welcoming. Up stairs to the accommodation - we were met by heat from a Wood burning stove - with a large leather settee next to it - while they shown my wife where what was there I took boots off and sat in front of the stove and started to nod off. A late meal was left for is - a lovely shower and toilet with open views to the fells - and a bed that was to die for. I think we both died that night to waken in the morning to fabulous views over the fells from the bedroom window. We breakfasted and Gary took us back to where he picked us up. I cannot but Highly recommend this accommodation for the two people that are so friendly and welcoming and the accommodation that is so clean and comfortable and very very warm indeed. I cannot see how anyone can improve on the best of the best.

Love and Regards to Pauline and Gary - we will see you soon.

Brian and Joan Finlayson

Room Tip: The views from the bed in the accommodation are mind blowing as are those from the from the bathroom...

As part of our C to C we walked to Keld lodge & thought that was wonderful and wished we were staying there. When Gary picked us up from there to take us back to Birkdale Farm we wondered what we were heading for. We needn't have worried, Gary & his wife are a wonderful couple and as soon as the door to the cottage was flung open and the heat from the wood burner hit us we could see we were on to a good thing. To be in our own self contained cottage, eating chilli & watching tv in my PJs! Bliss!! That night stands out from all the others on the walk, it gave us a chance to totally chill out and we loved it. Don't even consider staying anywhere else, book this now you won't regret it. There are so many little touches that make this as good as it is, the ducks wandering about just outside, the views, the peace & quiet, the wine & beer on offer, the chocolate in the fridge, the evening meal .......... I could go on. We'd love to go back in the winter and pray to be snowed in...........thanks for having us, it was brilliant xx

Room Tip: Warning! don't add too many logs to the wood burner, it kicks out serious heat. We put one extra...

Little Birkdale came almost exactly halfway through our Coast to Coast trip and really couldn't have been better.

Everything, from the warm-as-toast woodburning stove, to the homemade chilli con carne ready to heat up (and the full (and very good value) wine rack, had been thought through in great detail.

In many ways, this is the perfect walkers' accommodation. There's plenty of room, and you can eat when you wish, have a bath (as reported elsewhere, the view is amazing), and make your own breakfast with the excellent fare provided.

If the weather's good, it's worth a walk (even if you're tired) back up the track to take in the views across the valley.

Arrived after a long trudge through bogs and swollen becks so the sight of a roaring wood burner and a bath with lashings of hot water was heaven. Lying in the bath gave the best view in the cottage! There was everything needed for an excellent home-cooked supper and breakfast (including guinea fowl eggs). The separate cottage was a welcome break from B&B's and having all the food prepared and beds and fire made ready was the best of combinations. It was a little dark to read in the evening because of low wattage but the television worked!

On coast to coast it is nice to get a night away from B&B's which whilst they serve their purpose you are still in someone else's house. Here you have your own front door, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Evening meal is prepared for you to heat up when you are ready for it. Breakfast goods are left for you to cook and eat. Pick up from nearby Keld with drop off following orning. Great spot and lovely to be attended to by Cath and Garry who helped make stay enjoyable.
