Owner description: La Ponta, a 13th century tower, is located within the Venetian castle (Kasteli) of Akrotiri, 1km above the pre-historic archaeological site of Akrotiri, Santorini. The tower was abandoned by the current private owners in 1995. In 2012, the present caretakers internally preserved the the tower that had been destroyed by the 1956 earthquake and the ravages of time. They have presently established a tsabouna - Greek folk wind instrument of the bagpipe family - exhibition and workshop along with traditional Greek percussion instruments and flutes.

I loved the music and the Castle had the greatest views of the island I loved yannis music and the incredible musical instruments he makes Argy the director and also Yannis's wife is lovely and very knowledgeable of the castle's restoration and history.
It is quite a hike uphill to the castle but worthwhile.

“Tradition”

That is something you do not see every day. If you are interested about tradition and history this is a place you have to go while you are in Santorini

“Followed the great reviews to this special place :).”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

I learnt about this place on Tripadvisor and decided to visit it for the evening presentation (18:00) which Argy and Yannis put up every night. I believe this year during Summer months they also organized concerts twice a week at 21:30 but unfortunately I did not manage to visit one of those.

The tower has very interesting history and architecture, a mixture of styles which Argy expertly explained; there are also beautiful views of the island from its terrace. It is a very peaceful and meditative area, especially at sunset time.

The presentation was very interesting and uplifting. We first got a history lesson from Argy about Akrotiri and the tower and learnt about the restoration project which is happening there right now. There is a bagpipe exhibition, and many instruments were hand made by Yannis. He then gave a wonderful concert playing different instruments and encouraging us to make the music together! It was like travelling in time and space. Magical feeling.

Very memorable people, place and experience; highly recommended.

“Castle of Akrotiri”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

It was named 'La Ponta'. There is a guy, Yannis who play to ancient wind instruments. Verry nice!
The tower is located on the top of the Castle of Akrotiri that is to say in the centre of what was once a fortified settlement.
