We stayed for 9 days at Ypsylon hotel in January 2013. We did not have any expectations before our arrival since we knew it was a 2-star hotel. Rooms are ok and the location is good. After exploring the area we found better hotels for the same price. Food was also OK.
However, the service was fantastic! The staff was extremely friendly and professional, they were keen on satisfying each guest. We´ve experienced worse service even in 5-star hotels.

The avarage age of guests staying at Ypsylon was 50+ which gives the place a strange ambiance for younger visitors.

But if you just want to relax at the beach, this is a good place to start with in Sri Lanka.

Here are the three main reasons why we did not like our stay at the Ypsylon Guest house:
1/ Location is OK but all buildings need serious cleaning and renovation; sea view settings are fine without being extraordinary.
2/ Food is not a great asset either.
3/ Attitude of staff and management is far from being customer friendly; very disappointing. It's all about money!

Here some details about our 5 days-experience:
Hotel - The reception consists in a wooden desk where staff is on duty to keep the house, check the bills or do some administrative work. They just don't care about clients and don't see any point in making your stay nicer. Ask to use their phone to make a local phone call; they will be happy to charge you 25 SR / minute (normally you pay 1 SR / minute if an hotel dares asking you to pay for such a basic service). The restaurant is far from being a nice and cosy area too; in the middle of the place sits the cashier desk. It says a lot about the philosophy of this place and attitude of almost all waiters running after you to sign your bills.

Food - I guess it depends on each one's taste but it was not ours. The cook is German and prepares all sorts of German dishes. Sri Lankan cuisine was the worst we had in 2 weeks. Breakfast were not great either and we almost had to make a point to get what we ordered... On the contrary their cocktails, banana shakes and fruit juices are worth a try.

Rooms - Basic but clean. We were initially booked in a basic double room on the roof terrace. It was rather small but clean and with sea views from the terrace (common space to all upstairs double rooms). After one night we had to move to a triple room (ground floor facing the sea): same but just some more space to fit an additional single bed.

Location - As Ypsylon is not one of a kind in Beruwala, its location does not make it specifically attractive either. The only interest in this place is eventually its Diving Center. We took a PADI course with local instructor & team and could warmly recommend the experience.

Service - We were terribly shocked to discover the lack of professionalism of the management and its subordinated staff. Staff was stressed out (rather unusual in Sri Lanka) and constantly running after money/bills. No sense of customer service.

The worst thing is that the owner mixes family life with business life. We had the pleasure to meet with one of the owner's kids: Into the diving pool and in the middle of our PADI lesson with our instructor, the owner's 41 years old son did not think about anything better than interrupting the course, making funny signals and finally showing us his butt before leaving. Such a great sense of humour!
The owner did not think of presenting any apologies after we complained.

All in all, if not for the Diving Center, just pass your way as there are plenty of better places where to stay in Beruwala.

Ypsylon reaches the very bottom of our list of hotels visited in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: Double rooms on the first floor with semi-private balconies

I went to Sri Lanka through Thomas Cook and this resort was not on their itenary. However, after referring to the reviews of some kind souls on tripadvisor, I insisted on having it on my itenary.

The best part is the location (it has a private beach and good old beach chairs for relaxation, with the light tower just some distance out into the sea). The beach also makes for a cool morning walk stretch. The beach is excellent for swimming since the waves are not too hard and there will also be other guests swimming nearby. The tourists in this resort are mostly Europeans, and in fact, we appeared to be the only non-white guests out there.

The rooms are large and there aren't many unnecessary things in there (e.g. TV). However, the storage space is HUGE and you can lock ALL of your belongings in the various drawers and cupboards.

The one thing that really sets this place apart is the sea diving expeditions (if I can call it that). Having an international diving license will help, as you can opt for a more advanced diving course from the menu. Since I did not have a license, they were offering me a 12-metre dive for 55 Euros, but I had to drop the idea (not because of the money, though).

The food is alright, but it is very expensive by Sri Lankan standards. Unfortunately, there are no cheap alternatives nearby, so it is better to have food in the resort itself.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the first floor so that you can get a nice private sitting area. Also, turn up for...

My wife and I stayed here primarily for the diving school attached to the hotel.
There communication before we arrived was very good and gave us confidence in the operation.
We arrived late in the evening but we were welcomed and the kitchen stayed open for us to eat something.
The food was good quality and a reasonable variety and at good prices.
The dive school was very well organised and the guides were helpful and a good laugh. We did twin tank dives, which means we were done by 12pm so had the afternoon to chill out.
When compared to some of the very exclusive hotels down the same stretch of beach Ypsylon is a very attractive cheaper alternative.
During the day we ate at Ypsylon, but in the evenings we walked down the beach to Palm Beach Hotel (Rs 2000pp) and Cinnamon Bey (Rs 2550 pp)for there buffets in the evening they are lovely hotels but there accommodation is in the region of 3-4times expensive.

All in all a great weekend away

The whole building looks quite dilapidated and is in dire need of a refurbishment! The rooms are basic - twin beds, space to keep your bags, one musty cupboard and a dressing table with mirror. There are also 2 chairs with a small table both inside and outside on the verandah. The room has a fan (there are also separate A/C rooms). It can get quite warm as ventilation is very poor - the door can be kept open but there is no other window or door for a cross-breeze.

The bathroom is clean but basic - has hot water but the shower cannot be adjusted properly making it more a hand shower! The light bulb above the bathroom mirror is exposed so if you get too close you might burn your forehead!!!

Breakfast is usually included with the room and consists of the traditional basic/boring toast with jam and 2 eggs! Nothing special and the one time I tried the Sri Lankan breakfast I was very disappointed - probably the worst curry and rotti I ever had!!! Food in general is not that great.

Unfortunately in this price range it appears to be the only place in the area! The dive centre appears to be better equipped than most others in the country so if you are planning any diving in Beruwela this is the place to be. For a relaxing beach holiday I would choose an alternative destination/hotel.

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room!!!

Left to my own devices at reception, I soon realised that when the owner is away, the staff will only act if there is something in it for them (sell you a tour, sell you local mosquito repellent that does not work). The place has seen better days, and I am tolerant about facilities, but there comes a point at which somehere is not worth $30. The English is not too good either, so if you get stuck trying to communicate to the wrong person, there is no joy for you. When I did not like what I saw, I decided not to stay. They called me a 'no show' and charged me for a night's stay anyway - the kind of cynicism I travel independently to avoid. There are plenty of better places very close. And with two brand new hotels opening next door, you will definitely be sharing the beach in the future with more than the local touts.

Room Tip: check out the bathroom before you pay
