We flew emirates from Glasgow via Dubai. The taxi was waiting for us when we arrived at Colombo airport. After a journey of 2 hours we arrived at the hotel. We were taken to our room on the first floor which was clean and well air conditioned. The room was a good size and adequate for our needs, nice balcony overlooking the pool. Probably best to keep the aircon on at all times as we did, due to the fact that it can be a bit temperamental We were all inclusive and found the curries to be excellent. Overall the food was fine, although the beer on draft was undrinkable. However you can purchase a decent bottle of Lion Beer 660ml for 160 rupees, roughly £1 at the time. Wine is not included and choice is limited.

There is not much in the way of nightlife. The hotel provides entertainment but is was not to our taste. All hotel staff were friendly and helpful.

There are plenty of tour guides on the beach offering excursions. We opted to go with Rambo tours, the owner's name is Ranga. We had heard about him from previous reviews and were not disappointed. He took us on a personal tour of the local village market and temple, even got to meet his mum. He also arranged a river safari for us and a group of hotel guests which was most enjoyable. Ranga and Nadin who also works on the beach threw us a beach party one night which was pretty cool. Plenty of booze and traditional music around the bonfire. Later on in the week we and 6 others from the hotel went on a 2 day tour with Ranga to Kandy. The price was reasonable and the hotel accommodation in Kandy was excellent, although you need to watch out for the monkeys! We managed to soak up a lot of the cultural delights that Sri Lanka has to offer. If you are visiting the rock at Sigiriya, do not accept the offer of help to climb the vast staircases, you will be pestered for large tips. Best to tell the helpers firmly at the start that you do not need assistance, otherwise they are a real pain!

There is a nice beach bar around 200yds down the beach to the right. Drinks are even cheaper than the hotel and you can watch the sunset. You can take a tuktuk for very little money and there are nice restaurants a short drive from the hotel. We would recommend the Golden Grill.

Overall the holiday was thoroughly enjoyable and we would recommend it to anyone. Just remember to be prepared for mosquitoes, especially at night time.

It was really good and safe. we were in the hotel from 2 to 12 Jan. room 143 (it is very close to the dining room). a little damp but air conditioner did help even if it was not very new. and we always kept the terrace and toilet doors closed.
the room was cleaned and bed sheets were changed every day. even if everything was not very new, it was much better than we expected.
we didn't ask but they brought a safe for keeping our money and precious things. and one day we left it open occasionally - but everything was on their places. nothing stolen. no one even cleaned our room probably in order to avoid any suspicions and misunderstandings.
it is not a great place for party lovers, rather for older couples and for those who prefer staying in pairs and enjoying great climate (no matter if it is rain or not) : ) We just loved the quiteness . our room was soundproof but we didn't realize that unless it turned out our neighbors were an indian family with crying children. : ) though we could hear the plates from the dining room through the door.

Do not even try to wash your things yourself (maybe only swimming suits)- they do not become dry. Better use laundry service (600 rupees for 10 items) .

unless you know how to unblock the outlet (move the plate in the above hole aside with a toothpick) you can always buy adaptor for your camera and mobile phone recharge in the souvenirs shop in the hotel.

i don't know about internet in the hotel - but we found nice internet cafe when you go out to the main road. 100 rupees/hour.
Almost everything may be found in Aluthgama (abt 10 min by tuk-tuk = 100-150 rupees) - fruit, clothes. tea, souvenirs. there is a clothes shop with fixed prices called Mallikas - we bought many t-shirts as souvenirs there. jewellery in this shop was also very nice - good quality and design.
there is also a bus station in Aluthgama where you can find air conditioned bus to Colombo for abt 130 rupees - it is much better than 40 dollars : ) and people in these buses are entirely OK. But do not use the regular ones!! You can also get to Kandy by this air conditioned bus for abt 220 rupees and get excursions from there - it will be much cheaper.

We returned on 4 December from 2 weeks at this hotel and it was fantastic. Every member of staff we met were so friendly and helpful. After reading trip adviser before we went we were unsure of what to expect but we needn't have worried. We had a ground floor room which did smell a bit damp when we arrived but this soon wore off. Towels and sheets were changed daily and the room was kept vey clean. We found the trips offered by the reps to be very expensive and used the taxi drivers at the hotel instead (Donny in particular was great), the hotel in Kandy was superb. You really should go to Galle on the train - its an experience you will never forget and so cheap, takes about 90 minutes. Be very careful at some of the spice gardens on offer - a bit of a rip-off and mosquito heaven. Make sure you have plenty of deet sprays to ward off mozzies we got badly bitten and needed antibiotics. We found the animation team brilliant and got a lot of support from holidaymakers, the pool activities were such fun and we made a lot of friends through these. We used the Riverina hotel for our massage treatments and yes it is a lovely 4 star hotel but it did not have the same friendly feel as ours. Beach boys can be a pain but on the whole if you are firm with them and not rude to them they will leave you alone in the end, we had a great 3 hour boat trip with them down the bentota river.

We were in sri lanka and this hotel for my brothers wedding, they did a superb job to make their day very special for them.
hotel was in a great location, different types of food from different cultures. staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortble and plenty of air conditioning which was a big bonus for me. terraced or balacany in everyroom. mosquitto repelents in rooms. hotel is super considering it was badly effected by the 2004 tsunami.

I do not want to put those off who have booked this hotel but it is classed as a 3 star in Sri Lanka and it would be lucky to get a 2 here.

I arrived with my wife to be on 2/11/09 a pleasant greeting in an open area reception after 30 hours of no sleep, I am one of those who can't on the plane.

Within 10 minutes we are off to the room on the ground floor, almost the last one. As I opened the door the smell of damp hit us the bedding smelt, the room was awful, I opened the wardrobe door and the smell of moth balls came flying out. I complained and they moved us to the second floor and then the third into what they said was the best in the hotel, at least it did not smell as much and had a nice corner balcony overlooking the sea, although the paint from the window sill came off on my hand when I leant against the window. The food was ok and had an early night, no hot water until 20 mins of running the shower and the phone didnt work, several engineers later they would mend it in the morning and rang me at 7am to tell me it was repaired???

I knew there were other hotels in the same 'chain' nearby so we got up early and went for a look and saw, liked the Eden, which is classed as a 5 star. Long story short we moved there and it was the best move I made. In fact within 30 mins of telling them I wanted to upgrade we were in the other hotel.

The manager at CPG was friendly but kept saying well this is only a 3 star. I paid for the upgrade and he seemed suprised I could afford it.

THINK SERIOUSLY IF YOU BOOK THIS FOR YOUR SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!

I read lots of reviews on both hotels before travelling, spoke at length th Thomas Cook about what I wanted and still we moved. If you want basic and I mean basic then go to CPG if you want the stay to be in more pleasant surroundings go to the Eden.

The Club Plam Garden is a budget 3* hotel which offers a reasonable level of accommodation, with decent facilities, but in need of an upgrade.
The hotel is on the whole good value for the price we paid, we had no complaints about our room, Rm 338 which apart from a dodgey radio switch was nice and clean with good air conditioning. The hotel did at one stage during the holiday request us to move rooms so they could repair the ac in an adjacent room, but could not accommodate us, all offers being twin rooms - even offering us one of the end prestige rooms with huge balcony and better views, but the view was not important to us on a romantic holiday. They offered us a double room Rm 225 but this room was atrocious! clearly one of those that had suffered during the Tsumani, as the walls and ceiling were black and grey with damp and the bed was soaking wet. in the end they postponed the repairs until after our departure.
The staff are all friendly and work very hard to meet any demand, our only critisim being that the English of the key reception staff, other than the managers was poor and we found it difficult at times with two of the staff members to communicate our needs - never has ordering a picnic lunch for a tour day been so difficult! in the end we settled on a bottle of water and forgot about the lunch box.
The animation team work hard but their shows need to be revamped and upgraded as they are often none-sensical, and they love to cross dress! The quizzes are good fun, and the fire show was good, but the Big Spender routine followed by babies and mad barber sketches was just bizarre!!
The pool attendants are very good rushing to get you a bed, matress and towel in place as soon as you appear, and will move them around all day long wherever you want to chase the rays.
The gardeners work hard to attend to the grounds but are fighting a losing battle at times with the weather and the exisitng landscaping which requires upgrade ... the intermittent footpaths are a pain in the rain hoping from stone to stone to avoid the mud, and not wide enough for guests to comfortably pass. Come on confifi put a little thought into the upkeep, the Riverina next door puts the CPG to shame! minor irritation but it does make a difference.
The restaurant is large enough to accommodate all guests and the menu choice is ample, but the food is often cold - even when it has just come from the kitchen ( that said we ate out and ordered currys which were also served to us barely warm with cold rice, however all the locals were tucking in and clearing their plates! it may be a regional thing). The tree house meal for special occassions is well worth it, they pull out all the stops to make it romantic and memorable.
The biggest irritation are the beach boys and beach vendors who just do not comprehend that if they were to be informative but not aggressive in their sales technique, they may find themselves earning more from customers who have been allowed to go away, think things over and then go back to them with their requirements. We did however use some of these chaps and they do on the whole offer good trips, no different to those on offer inside the hotel, for a reasonable price and all our friends who used them were happy.
Hotel taxis are a rip off, I'd recommend taking the number of the airport taxi and calling him for any taxi requirement for long trips. The train is very good value for money RS100 to Galle 2nd class, RS55 3rd class.
Tuk tuks are an experience, you HAVE to barter the price before you get in!! do not pay more than RS150 to the town and rail station in Althughama.
Uwanamatuna 5km east of Galle is RS200 Tuk tuk, and well worth a trip to this lovely calm bay with plenty of guesthouse accommodation for only RS1500-2500 per room per night.
