“Somewhat disappointing after reading great reviews”
Reviewed November 1, 2013 via mobile

Much praised restaurant - but at our visit service was slow despite small number of diners; the food quite good but the pork dish only just warm. Friendly service from owner.

“Charming, authentic greek taverna food”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

Most people on Hydra would know this as "Christina and Manoulis Place"--the owners of this little gem. It's tucked back into the town, but not that hard to find. There are only four streets running up the hill from the harbor. Take the second one up the hill until it runs into a church, then hang a left. You can't miss it. We ate there three times, each time ordering a multitude of whatever Christina had prepared that day. Like so many places on Hydra, put the menu down, and just ask the server what they've prepared that day...and then order it.

The food here is the real deal. Large portions of freshly prepared homestyle greek food. stuffed wine leaves are the best on the island (maybe the best anywhere). An your hosts are two lovely people who have created the most unpretentious little taverna that could easily be a foodie destination. In high season, you may have a hard time getting in. It's that good.

“Great gem but ask for directions!”
Reviewed October 24, 2013 via mobile

Cute place with great terrace! The food is delicious and home cooked. The owner was waiting on us and even though we visited during the low season the specials were very tasty! She was so sweet and helpful. It is not far from the port but you will need to ask a local for directions!

“Authentic Greek Restaurant in Hydra”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

Went to Tavena Gitoniko based on Tripadvisor reviews and the place did not disappoint. It is a little bit out of the main drag but not too hard to find. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you know that you are in for some authentic Greek cooking. Christina prepares home cooked meals and everything is delicious! We were seated at the roof terrace which provided a cool respite from the Hydra heat (we visited in July). Hydra gem, definitely!

“Hard to find - but well worth it”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We ate here twice. We actually found it by chance, before we heard anything about it. Food is excellent and good value. Christina was charming and very informative about the history of Hydra and told us about Leonard Cohen's visits to the café. His favourite meal was calamari and beetroot salad, which of course we had to have in his honour. Delicious,. The roof terrace tends to attract large groups, but also when we were there, at least three ladies eating alone, and apparently enjoying themselves. Don't bother with reading the menu - it's mainly aspirational. Ask what's available and Christina will guide you. The veal chops were delicious. The house white wind [6euro per litre] very drinkable.
