“The very best choice on Hydra”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2013

If you are visiting the island of Hydra, this charming little hotel is like having a front row seat. All the activity of the island is contained in the small harbor--a short row of open-air tavernas, small shops, an old church, and the water taxi stand. And the Hotel Sophia is smack-dab in the center of it all. From your balcony, you can sip coffee every morning and watch the donkeys being loaded with whatever was shipped over from the mainland...as well as people-watch as locals and tourists meander the cobblestone harbor. This theatre entertained us for hours.

The hotel itself is charming. Clean, modern bathroom, comfortable beds, very good free wi-fi, and a very good breakfast that is included in the room rate. The ladies that own Hotel Sophia make you feel very much like guests in their home.

There are a dozen or so other places to stay on Hydra--we saw them all in our 2 weeks we spend there. And honestly, all of them are probably comparable in the quality basic facilities (the room). This is a small island--nothing here is "4 star." This isn't that kind of place. The difference between the others and Hotel Sophia is entirely about the location. If you want to feel like you're really a part of what's going on here, this is the only hotel that can offer you this kind of harbor-front view. The rest of the accommodations will all be tucked back in the town, or a water-taxi ride away.

Room Tip: Room 105--in the front, with balcony. Not all rooms here include the balcony...and that is THE rea...

My wife and I were so excited to stay at Hotel Sophia and it did not disappoint. The balcony overlooking the harbor is constant entertainment. We sat for hours sipping coffee and wine watching all the action. Our hosts were so kind to us, they fed us a delicious breakfast and told us about their wonderful island of Hydra. Cannot wait to go back.

We booked hotel Sophia for 5 nights and we loved it so much that we extended our stay to 7 nights! There was nothing we didn't like, and the warm and generous hosts couldn't have made us feel more welcome. We felt like friends that had come to stay! The rooms are beautifully furnished- we had a maisonette room without a private balcony but still were able to use the main balcony to eat our breakfast, hang out and watch the amazing local life on this incredible island! The breakfast is worth the say alone- home cooked omelets, frittatas, cakes, jams..wow. We felt very spoilt! Both of us travel a lot for work and leisure and are confident to say that Hotel Sophia is hands down up there in our top 3 favourite stays of all time. Go!!!

The Hotel Sophia is a fabulous place to stay in Hydra. It is right on the port overlooking the harbour, the yachts and restaurants in the main square.
Two lovely sisters run the hotel and together with their excellent staff they really looked after us for the 8 nights we stayed there.
Without a doubt this is the nicest place we've stayed at on Hydra in the 4 years we've been coming. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Recommend a room with a balcony.

You simply cannot fault this hotel. We had a maisonette style room with a balcony for two weeks in July and it was fantastic. The view over the harbour and the frantic morning donkey loading session has to be experienced to believed! Key memories for us: Morning church bells, views of beautiful boats in the harbour, fishermen selling their catch from boats just across form the balcony, donkeys, donkeys and more donkeys, fantastic breakfasts cooked in front of you, interesting breakfast chats with other guests around the table, fridge stocked with soft drinks and water every day, early evenings on the balcony before heading off to a restaurant. However, the best thing about the hotel is the fantastic people who run it. We would like to say a big thank you to Aggeliki, Dorothy, Nikitas, Linda and Basiliki for making our stay so special and memorable. Nic & Anita

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Sofia in late May of this year for a 30th anniversary trip. Our hosts were very friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the maisonette where the bed was in a loft. It made the overall space seem very roomy. Its a little more expensive but well worth the extra The view from the balcony to the busy little port was fascinating, and we spent many enjoyable hours just people/donkey watching. Despite what some have reported, I did not find the proximity to the port to be particularly noisy.

The breakfast was delicious with fresh local bread every day, fruit, yogurt, eggs, meats, and cheeses. The recommendations for restaurants and activities were spot on. Beaches are easily accessible by foot or water taxi. No need for swimming pool or fitness center. We could not have been more delighted with our stay. I even picked up some Greek.

Efharistopoli, Angela for a wonderful stay. I hope we will be back soon.

Room Tip: I would choose room with Private access to the balcony.

Our family of six (3 rooms) recently spent eight nights at the Hotel Sophia in Hydra. We had visited Hydra many times in the past. At our son's recommendation; he had two separate visits at the hotel in 2011 and 12; we decided to give Hotel Sophia a shot. We could not have been more pleased. The owner, Nikitas and his family (Angela, Vassiliki and Dorothea) could not have been friendlier and more helpful with all our needs. They were ably assisted by Linda. The hotel is centrally located on the port and while quite old, it has been excellently maintained. The furnishing and decorations are just right and the bedding is first class. The shower is best we have ever had on a Greek island. The buffet breakfast is magnificent and everyday there is featured new pastry/bakery item. The variety of homemade jams and marmalades are perfectly made and presented. All in all, a first rate hotel experience with an enjoyable family style staff.
