“Best location”

Hotel Sophia commands the best location right on the port with some rooms with balconies facing the waterfront. The service from the family was excellent and they made you feel welcome in their beautiful boutique hotel. Rooms were well appointed with complimentary cold drinks on arrival. You could just sit on your balcony and be entertained by the theatre on the area for hours on end. Only small negative point was that the beds were very firm. Can recommend hotel Sophia as a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Book a front room with balcony

Upon arrival at Hotel Sophia, two sweet sisters, Aggeliki and Vasiliki, open their doors and their hearts to their guests. The encompassing warmth provides a home away from home. Breakfast is served in a lovely dining room, family style, with delicious choices including homemade preserves, omelets, Greek yogurt, meats and cheeses, and fresh fruit. Balconies, whether private or shared, provide perfect seating to view the daily port life of Hydra. Guests can sit, sipping their tea or coffee, and watch ships unloading cargo, donkeys waiting to be loaded, cats sunbathing, and people enjoying life. Sounds heard include church bells, wind, and laughter. Korres toiletries, assorted candies, and cool refreshments are gifts waiting in your room. One must experience for themselves the uniqueness and sincerity of Hotel Sophia, Hydra, Aggeliki and Vasiliki. My stay, along with my aunt, was for four nights in early November. I returned three days later and stayed an additional three nights because I adored my initial visit. I am planning a week's stay for this upcoming summer.

We just want to confirm all the previous excellent expriences. Going to Hotel Sophia, and thereby to Aggeliki & Vassiliki, is like coming home. If you are 10% Greek in your mind, you will immediately feel home and welcome. Location is stunning, rooms are excellent, breakfast is made with love and care. Nothing to complain about at all.

If you, however, look for hotel chains, standard rooms and standard (lack of) services, you will not be in the right place. But then Hydra is not the right place for you anyway. So be aware: It is at a small port, so they are port sounds. It is near a bell tower, so you will hear the bells (like anywhere in Ydra). It is a small hotel, so it has a small breakfast room.

We will be back!

Room Tip: Room with a balcony to the port!

I recently booked out the hotel (6 rooms) for my family to stay, as we had our wedding on the island. Aggeliki and Basiliki were absolutely wonderful hosts - very accommodating and always friendly.

The hotel is located in such a wonderfully convenient location at the port. It is in the centre of everything and the balconies on the front rooms are magnificent to watch the world go by. Ships coming and going all day long, whilst locals and tourists are scuttling around beneath. It literally takes about 30 seconds to walk from the dock (e.g. where Hellenic seaways docks) to the hotel.

On arrival, we were welcomed by our hosts who quickly showed us to our rooms. Additionally, we had a lot of extra items for the wedding, which our hosts kindly let us store in an adjoining storage room.

The rooms were really great, clean and well kept. The size of both the double and triple rooms were also really good and modern. Everyday, we would have breakfast in the dining area on the ground floor, with freshly baked cakes, toast, eggs, cold meats and of course...coffee and frappe.

Our hosts had a great deal of information to share with us if we so desired. They know most things about Hydra, considering their long association here. They provided us with appropriate maps, restaurant recommendations and places to see and walk to.

Our wedding day showed a very unexpected hospitality from Aggeliki and Basiliki. The groom got ready at the hotel and our hosts decorated the hotel, and his room with beautiful ribbons and decorations, to welcome the arrival or more family and friends. Once again, they were so accommodating, having more than 50 extra people either in their hotel in the surrounding area - singing etc.

Overall, we had such a wonderful experience with Hotel Sophia. We will certainly return for our anniversary and would recommend to anyone and everyone to stay here.

Room Tip: I would go for the double or triple rooms at the front of the hotel, with balconies.

We chose this small hotel because of its location right on the port, and were very pleased with it. We spent a lot of time on our little balcony, watching cargo being loaded onto the donkeys in the morning and the restaurant and boat traffic in the evening. It was quite hot during the day but the balcony stayed shaded, so it was our refuge whenever we returned from our short sightseeing forays in the sun. Perhaps we are easily amused, but I got a great deal of entertainment out of watching the cats stalking around, the older men drinking endless cups of coffee in the cafes, the tourists dragging their noisy wheeled bags across the cobblestones, etc. etc. It was a great window on life on Hydra.

The room was better than I expected, a little dark and narrow but unique and with some care taken to selecting cute pillows and other accessories, decent toiletries and pretty monogrammed linens. Breakfast was ok but not great (canned orange juice). I'd recommend taking a tray up to the balcony, as the breakfast room is a communal table in the entry room with no view.

On a standalone basis, I'd probably rate the hotel 4 to 4.5 stars, but it gets rounded up to 5 because it offers a location and view that no one else can match in Hydra.

Room Tip: Definitely spend the small extra amount of money for a balcony - the entertainment value is well wor...

We can't say enough good things about this place.

The location is fantastic. If you get a room with a balcony, you can sit right over the middle of the port, and watch port life go by. In the morning, over breakfast, you can watch the ships unloading cargo onto the donkeys right under you.

The hosts are welcoming, warm, and do everything to make your stay delightful. Just little examples: we asked the location of a market to buy some fruit, and 10 minutes later they brought us a fresh fruit plate. They serve a great homemade breakfast. I complimented one of the dishes, and was given some to pack to take with us when we left.

The rooms are clean, comfortable, beautifully furnished, and have all the amenities we wanted. They are not very large, but for a couple it was perfect.

If we return to Hydra, we are definitely staying here again.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony. It's totally worth the small extra expenditure.
