This was our first visit to Hotel Orquidea. We had read a number of reviews with negative comments which made us quite apprehensive about what to expect but we need not have worried. The hotel is located at Bahia Feliz which is very quiet. Some reviews have raised this as a bad thing but if you are on holiday with a young family the area is excellent as it is very quiet, there are no tacky British themed pubs and pushy restaurant owners trying to drag you into their cafes. The hotel is pretty modern and very clean. Our 'standard' room was perfectly fine for the 2 weeks. With the all inclusive you get really good choices of food at Breakfast and Dinner. I'm a fussy eater and found the quality of the food to be slightly lacking but that aside there was always a wide choice. Lunch is from a choice of three bars all serving hot dogs, burgers, salad, chips, toasties etc. You can be as varied as you want it to be. The ice cream was good quality and never ran out. The kids were very happy. The pools are pretty good with a toddlers pool, a more grown up pool and medium sized free for all. A life guard is on duty most of the day and was pretty alert to what was going on in the two larger pools. The entertainment is typical holiday fare but the reps really put in a tremendous effort. All of them were very good and always seemed to be interested in interacting with the kids and adults. Sunny Sara, Becka Boo and Andy Pandy do get a shout out here. The kids clubs kept the children occupied with our two wanting to go back each day. They also have a couple of evening drop ins where you can go out without the kids. There is a kids disco every night as well. You will find yourself humming to Samba De Janeiro and Choco choco before you know it. The beach is a bit dissappointing but we didnt have any preconceived ideas and were expecting it to be pebbly. You can hire sunbeds in a sandy area by the beach but there is a charge. The fact you are right by the sea though more than compensates. As mentioned in another review you can get a taxi to Playa Del Ingles which will cost you about 7 euros one way. The beach there is massive and sandy but is let down by the surrounding town (which is tacky and British themed and full of teenage party goers). Other reviews have mentioned about the Scandanavians guests at the hotel. There were plenty of them but they all seemed friendly enough. If you went ot the Coco Loco bar at night you could see their entertainment which was also pretty good. They had a High School musical type show, which despte only having 5 on stage performers, was excellent. Hotel Orquidea is a Family club extra and included things like a football academy and swimming coaches as well as a Spa and gym (we didn't realise that) which were resonably priced. We've already booked to go back next year which should say more than the review itself.

I have never written a review about a holiday before but after this trip I feel compelled to do so. Me, my wife and two kids aged 8 and 5 have never been on an all inclusive holiday before so we were a little bit apprehensive before this one. The coach transfer was fast only 20 minutes to and from the hotel which was the first drop on the way and the last pick up going home this was organized efficiently without confusion. Unfortunately in our excitement when we had checked in to our room we realized that we had left one of our cases on the carousel at the airport! The hotel reception put me through to the helpline where I spoke to Annelie who was fantastic and had located and arranged for a rep to bring it to the hotel within 45 minutes. Now that’s what I call customer service. The rooms are spacious with a lovely view of the pools and sea and they are cleaned perfectly every day. There is no problem with getting a sun lounger in the morning as there are so many however I would recommend getting one before 08.30 if you want to be right next to one of the swimming pools. There are 3 pools two of them being completely child friendly. Yes the beach is a pebbly beach but our kids had great time splashing around and running away from the waves which are little strong but not dangerous at all. The entertainment is great with a variety of activities catering for all tastes and no pressure from the reps to take part actually the problem is that the activities are so much fun sometimes too many guests are doing them, one day there were 98 guests doing ‘party in the pool’. Kids club is great with different fun activities every day and guess what….it’s very popular so pre book your kids the night before to avoid disappointment my kids took a particular shine to Crazy Craig. The staff are always friendly and chatty remembering the kid’s names and little things you told them a week ago! Little things like this made our personal experience that much better. Which leads me to the food, all I can say is that if anybody has a problem with the food then they must only eat at 5 Star Michelin restaurants. Considering the amount of guests they cater for and the fact that it is ‘All Inclusive’ I am amazed at the quality of the food and the variety of choice. There are 5 restaurants to choose from and in the main restaurant there is a themed menu 3 nights a week, while we stayed they did Italian, Mexican, Caribbean and Asian with the option of a Tapas menu in one of the other restaurants. There is also a kids section with everything you need however our kids preferred the ‘Adult section’. Burgers, Pizza, Hot Dogs, Toasties, Chips, Wedges, Chicken wings etc were available at the pool bar/restaurant from 10.00 – 16.00. The location is great, Bahia Feliz is quiet but you are a short cab or bus trip from many great beaches attractions and sites such as San Augustin, Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles. We will definitely be returning next year and would recommend this holiday to any family with young children.

Just returned from 10 days at Orquidea and my 4 year old son sobbed at the airport because he didn't want to come home!! This hotel is fab for children and the reps are amazing, becca boo, jonty wonty and soccer steve where his favourite! They work so hard and have u entertained all day and night.
The hotel itself is spotless and the rooms are really big with lovely views over pools and sea. The food was nice but after 10 days got a bit repetative but there was always plenty. There was much surrounding the hotel but there really is not much need to leave.
We did book Sioux City through our rep and had a really good time. Will definately be going back and would reccomend anyone with young children to go to this hotel!!

We travelled to the Hotel Orquidea on Monday 14th June 2010, we were due to arrive at the hotel around 10pm, yet Thomson decided to change our flights and therefore didnt arrive until Midnight, although we had eaten before we left home, we at least expected to be able to get a drink cofffee wate wahtever when we arrived ! MMM when we arrived we were greeted at the hotel by lets say a not so friendly reception desk who may as well have just thrown our keys at us, when we asked if there was somewhere we could get a coffee or soft drink, he pointed to a bar across from the hotel and said THERE WE HAVE NOTHING FOR YOU HERE ! oh great so we arrive after 7 hours travelling in total with a 2 year old to a so called 4 star hotel and no drink, they clearly knew we were arriving as there was a large number of us from that flight but no, so no drink and off to bed !!
The rooms were ok, spacious, but the bathroom was dirty, the toilet was filthy and the floors in the room hadnt been cleaned / mopped, so the first hour ( being a germ concious mum !) was spent cleaning the room with my flash wipes.
The rooms TV didnt work, there was no remote and there was no plug in the bath ( which would have been fine for us but we needed to bath our toddler every day ! )
We also found a lovely pair !!!!! of pants under the bed which werent ours !
The first full day we went along to the welcome meeting which was good apart from when we asked regarding the toddler club as our daughter couldnt go in the free kids clubs as she wasnt three, we were told it would be 13E for 2 hours, but if we'd booked it with our holiday it would have been 5E a session ( we were never given that option ???) so prepare yourself if you want your toddler to go in the club book it before you go, we tried to then book her in for a couple of sessions but GUESS WHAT they were full !!
As in other reviews if you want to get a decent spot by the pool prepare yourself for getting up at 5am ! the first few days we went down to the pool at around 9am to try and get a good spot, but every lounger had a towel, when one day it was close to 12noon and most sunbeds still just had the towel on i mentioned it to the rep who told me i quote " well we are supposed to remove peoples towels who reserve but we dont bother " wonderful, so if you cant beat them join them, so off trudged my husband at 7am the next day to get a spot near toddler pool OH MY GOD all full !!!!!
One night we even saw a couple put there towels on at 12midnight after the entertainment !
The food was good, it was a good selection, well prepared and varied at all three meals, the only downside is not being able to use the coco loco unless you pay, but we didnt need to really as the other areas offering food were good.
The drinks were also ok, milkshake for kids were nice and bar staff in main entertainment were good and friendly, only downside is wine in a plastic glass.
Frankys Bar just across from the hotel is FAB if you want a drink outside hotel very cheap we had a 1 ltr jug of sangria ( very nice lots of fruit ) and a large san miguel and it was only 5E, a nice little walk across when our daughter had her nap !
We did eat out one night in the square in village, restaurant was lovely again quite cheap and good service.
The night we ate out was my husbands 30th birthday and as soon as we arrived had asked at reception if they could provide a bottle of bubbly or chocs or cake anything really. here was my answer ( from rep also ) You can pay 18E and have a cake thats it !!
I was happy to pay but Champagne i was after so off i went to the local shop got a good champagne for 20E and some plastic champagne glasses we popped a candle in a doughnut happy 30th !!!, I also enquired if for that day i could pay for room service breakfast a simple NO was what i got !!
The hotel is very close to Playa de Ingles and Maspalomas and taxis are very cheap, nice to have a walk round, the beach at the hotel is pebbles but there is also a man made beach so not too much of an issue, if you want a FAB beach get the bus or taxi to Amadores ( man mande but fantastic !!!!)
Entertainment at the hotel was excellent for the kids and also adults, the thomson entertainment staff were great, reps should take a leaf out of their books !
This hotel bar the food should only be a 3 star, the rooms were old and needed refurbs, the cleanliness was slack and the reception staff bar one were miserable as sin ! The only upside of the rooms was it was the first hotel i think i have ever stayed in that you couldnt hear everything the people next door were doing.
We expected better standards at a 4 star

This was our first holiday abroad with our 3 year old twins so we were a little apprehensive. We needn't have been. The transfer from the airport was only 20mins and we were the first drop off. Booked in quickly and were delighted with our room. We had requested a low floor and a sea view, both of which we got. The hotel was clean, modern and spacious, the grounds were superb, the only draw back being the lack of a beach i.e. big pebbles and very rough seas, however we were aware of this and it didn't really bother us as the hotel pools were great and the kids loved the childrens' pool. If we had of wanted to go on the beach be aware it is a public beach and you will have to pay to hire sunbeds. This brings me to another gripe, towels on sunbeds early in the morning. I was horrified to look out of our window the first morning at 7am to see that most of the sunbeds around the pools had already been claimed with towels! I have since found out that this is the responsibility of the hotel and the reps to make sure this doesn't happen.

The hotel staff are very polite and helpful. The food overall was very good but we found very little choice for the kids, they needed a few obvious things like sausages, fish fingers etc to be available at every meal, every day. The drinks were readily available, unlimited pop/juice and Carte D'or ice cream for kids. We think the spirits were watered down, especially the measures they were serving, but plenty of choice and availability.

By far the most fab thing about this holiday was the Thomson kids clubs. Our two loved the morning group, particularly the Choc-tastic day and the Busy Bugs and the Magic Tree. Crazy Graig, Lollipop Laura, Ellie Wellie and Disco Donna were all big hits with our kids. Thanks to them my husband and I had two hours each morning to just lie around the pool and relax for a while which was something we didn't expect.

If you want a great family holiday with good food, no stress, a couple of hours away from the kids, great entertainment, particularly the kids club, then I can definitely recommend this hotel. The resort is very quiet having only one small square of restaurants with a few shops/supermarkets, so probably not for you if you want to be able to stroll out of the hotel to explore.

Really loved this hotel, the staff were brilliant from the maids - to the bar staff - to the reception staff. I can not say enough brilliant things about the Thomson Reps from the front line staff to the creche reps, to the entertainment staff and the kids reps.
I will get this bit over as I hate to be negative when so many people work so hard. The only problem we found was the location of the hotel, there is not much around it, if you like to get out of the hotle there is not much to do if you have been around the the few shops three is. You can take the buses and taxi's and that is easy. But if you just wanted to walk somewhere after lunch or to get the children a sleep there was no where to go. If you like to stay in the hotel and enjoy joining in the games, or swimming and sun bathing than you will love your holiday but if you like to explore on foot and get bored wih the same surroundings you will not like it. - enough of that now!!!
Food- was brilliant different every night , fruit and veg every night, enough choice for all including the children, could get a bit slaty at times. There were no queues and the atmosphere was great considering it is a big food hall. Lunch and breakfast was great as well and ate like a king most of the time.
Drinks - could get a drink when ever you wnated , I loved that I could have a few G and T's in the PM, I think th drink were watered down but i =quite liked that as we did not wake up with hang overs but had good nights.
Entertainment- Very very good, entertained if we wanted to be from 11am - 12pm but not if you did not want to. The shows were excellent and the energy of the entertainment reps was just incredible.
Children Clubs - super duper my son loved it and fell in love with lollipop Laura and disco Donna who were the jicest girls I have met.
Creche- what can i say just supurb the girls were loving, friendly, knowledgable about all the children and would often take time to say hello to my little boy whenever they saw him. 13 euro was a bit steep but worth a two hour break.
Hotel - was clean and had beautiful grounds, rooms were spotlessly clean and spacious.
A brillaint holiday that we loved even though it was cloudy most of the time hence the G & T's.. Would recommend to any one just know about the location and lack of sand on beach. Enjoy x
