“At Home Feeling”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2012 via mobile

I have stayed in Hotel Kyma many times during my many travels to Chios island with my family. Without doubt the foremost quality of Kyma is the hospitality of the dear host Mr. Theodor. Mr. Theodor provides a comfortable, homelike atmosphere so you never feel like a stranger as one usually feels in other hotel lobbies and rooms. You are provided with constant guidance and uptodate information. He speaks fluent English and some Turkish.

The hotel is centrally located and in walking distance to the center. You can never get lost, in all aspects.

It is the place to stay in Chios.

Kyma is a renovated Italian mansion with an added on modern wing a few blocks from the embarkation point at the harbor and town center right on the seaside.

Hotel has regular amenities but excellent service. Spordilis family takes care of every need you may have in an elegant way. Breakfast is open buffet and contains very carefully selected or homemade selections from all continents including selections from Turkish breakfast.

Some critics of the hotel here were a real surprise for me to read. Especially a Turkish couple were complaining about the breakfast where this hotel is maybe the single venue where you can find Turkish breakfast in Greece where breakfast means only cheese pie and yogurt with honey. (Or coffee and cigarettes) Another one criticized the presentation of the breakfast and said he preferred breakfast of bigger resorts. I respect his choice if one is free to prefer rotten food presented great to well selected and quality items in a standard setting.

The small hotel , like an old masion, offers good large rooms with all the amenities with very good price. the staff was standby to provide me breakfast at 5.00 AM without me , even ask for that. They make feel you you are special . Very pleasant seating hall with old classic furniture. It was nice and i use it again

Room Tip: Ask room with a view if you stay longer

I stayed at the Kyma for the first time in 1993; this was our third stay there. It's a wonderful example of a delightful kind of hotel, built and furnished many years ago and lovingly maintained ever since. Decor, furnishings, and plumbing are all old-fashioned, but so are the comforts of sunshine, ocean breezes, shutters which really work, and access to a beautiful, broad verandah overlooking the sea. Chios is a lively town with a livelier harborside cafe scene; the Kyma has easy access to all of this but is just enough removed to be peaceful and quiet. Breakfasts are sumptuous: bread, lots of fruit, eggs, thick Greek yogurt with honey or a variety of jams, and a bottomless pot of coffee. Best of all, however, is Theodore Spordilis' constant, welcoming presence. We are usually very independent travellers, but we found ourselves turning to Theodore with every question. He is endlessly knowledgeable about both Chios and the Cesme/Izmir area of Turkey. And he welcomed us back from every adventure with more coffee and and friendly interest in our day's activities. There's lots to do and see on Chios, but the opportunity to stay in the Kyma is reason enough to visit the island.

We were also lucky enough to stay in a room overlooking the agean sea for 65 euro a night. Winding marble staircase to the first floor, 100 year old motif on the ceiling in the dining room, slightly uneven parquetry floors, old French doors that open onto a large balcony with views of the sea and Turkey in the near distance. Yes the furniture and bathrooms are dated. But perhaps you should think of this hotel as a B&B rather that a perfect all amenities hotel.
And of course the owner/manager is the most kind, generous and informative manager we have come across. Ask Theodore anything and he will point you in the right direction,(even a lengthy conversation about Greece returning to the drachma or staying within the euro).

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the agean sea, maybe on the second floor to reduce traffic noise

After touring the island we wanted to stay a night in the town before next afternoons ferry. Before returning the car I drove to end of waterfront and parked right outside the door of this hotel. I didn't like the look of the room but it led onto a spacious terrace (altho shared with 3 other sea-facing rooms) overlooking the sea, although not with a harbour view.

Since we had just been staying at a very luxurious beachfront hotel (Lithi) for only €60, I though €65 was far too high but there was little other choice - the Chandris was €80, and the only other nearby hotel was closed. I later regretted my choice since the room was very cramped and old-fashioned with a sloping floor and bare pipework all around. Having said all that the owner and his son (?) who both spoke very good English, were extremely helpful and hospitable. So much so that I feel bad dissing their hotel, but I want to maintain my integrity and not give it an unrealistic rating.

The owner of the hotel is a real asset. He is extremely helpful, kind and caring. However it seems that the rooms have not been renovated for half a century. The breakfast is delicious and good variety. The location is very central with many options for dining and other amenities. I recommend this hotel for a short stay (1-2 nights). If you plan to spend more time you may want to consider other options.
