“Helpful owner, terrible room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2011

After touring the island we wanted to stay a night in the town before next afternoons ferry. Before returning the car I drove to end of waterfront and parked right outside the door of this hotel. I didn't like the look of the room but it led onto a spacious terrace (altho shared with 3 other sea-facing rooms) overlooking the sea, although not with a harbour view.

Since we had just been staying at a very luxurious beachfront hotel (Lithi) for only €60, I though €65 was far too high but there was little other choice - the Chandris was €80, and the only other nearby hotel was closed. I later regretted my choice since the room was very cramped and old-fashioned with a sloping floor and bare pipework all around. Having said all that the owner and his son (?) who both spoke very good English, were extremely helpful and hospitable. So much so that I feel bad dissing their hotel, but I want to maintain my integrity and not give it an unrealistic rating.

The owner of the hotel is a real asset. He is extremely helpful, kind and caring. However it seems that the rooms have not been renovated for half a century. The breakfast is delicious and good variety. The location is very central with many options for dining and other amenities. I recommend this hotel for a short stay (1-2 nights). If you plan to spend more time you may want to consider other options.

Chios is a busy harbor town, and the Hotel Kyma is a great historic mansion a few blocks from the center of town, right on the water. The host was terrifically helpful not only planning our time in Chios but also about Turkey, our next stop - his wife is Turkish. The views are great and the breakfasts were the best we had our whole trip.

We read all sorts of wonderful things about this hotel and its owner. The information about the owner proved true, as he is a wealth of information about the island, attentive, and very helpful.

The hotel, on the other hand, needs some help. We stayed in a corner room in the "modern" wing, though there was little modern about it. The room was cramped and dark. The beds were fine and we slept okay. However, the bathroom was dilapidated and the shower had low pressure on two occasions. A hair dryer was provided in its box on the desk. Overall, it was a dingy and characterless place to stay.

The breakfast, extolled in the guide, was pretty poor. It consisted of buffet bins filled with a random assortment of items -- olives, jams, whole fruit, bread and yogurt. Like the rooms, the food was just thrown in there with no sense of presentation or attempt to make anything look appetizing.

In hotels on other Greek islands, we paid less and received the same level of service, enjoyed a better-appointed and more comfortable room, and woke to tasty breakfasts with a variety of options. At this hotel, we received a lot of advice about where to go and what to do, but the amenities were not worth the money. If you enjoy paying a lot of money for someone to book you a car and give you a map, go to this hotel. If you feel that a hotel is part of your experience in a place, choose somewhere else to stay.

I appeared there with no reservation and luckily they had room. It is absolutely a great place to stay. I selected a side room and do not regret that decision. It is close a a public beach, the harbor and a very lively area yet, very quiet at night. I loved the fact that I could see the street and the beach right from my bed.And the sunset and sunrise right from my bed. The breakfast was generous and the room simple but clean. Of course the price is reasonable and it put s one mind's at ease to meet a very caring, professional, hands on owner./manager in Theodoris. He definitely made my stay quite pleasant there and I would and I plan to go back by myself and with my family and highly recommend it. Whatever they do not have there, they attempt to get it for you. That is pleasing a guest !that is 5-star service.!

Booked this hotel on the strength of reviews here. Not at all what I was expecting. The place is in a state of complete disrepair, not very clean, and doesn't feel safe for lone female traveler. Doors barely lock. Entrance open 24/7 with sometimes no one at front desk. Plaster actually falling off the wall onto your head in bed (huge cracked area). The chair for the desk had come apart at the legs and been pushed back together. I sat down (not noticing) and the thing collapsed. Fridge not working. Bathroom dirty and in poor repair. Shall I go on??? Only good thing was very clean sheets on a very comfortable bed, which is not an easy thing to find in Greece.

Hotel Kyma is located near the port and town beach.
Although it is near the port it is at least a 25 minutes walk to the ferry berth, that is located on the opposite site of the harbor.

Kyma is a small hotel the offers an excellent price/quality ratio.

It was a former mansion and is now adapted to an hotel. Has a good traditional feeling.

It is family owned, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
The rooms are very comfortable and have an excellent balcony over the sea.

The hotel was much better than expected in all aspects. One it was the breakfast. It didn't have anithing extraordinary but it was quite relaxed and friendly, you could go up until 11 AM...and sometimes even after 11. Great!
Tip: the hotel is located close to the Chios archeological museum that deserves a visit. Ask the owner for directions.
