We stayed at the Thalassi for 2 weeks and had a great time. Eva,in the hotel, couldn't do enough for her guests and was always happy to stop for a chat and helpful advice. Dimitri and his staff made the meals entertaining as well as tasty. We were all inclusive and it was a nice change not to have a buffet but a choice of taverna type meals. Food was always delicious. When I said 'yeovetsi' was a favourite and not on the menu, Dimitri supplied it a few days later and it was brilliant. My only criticism is that alcoholic drinks for AI were a little limited (wine, beer, ouzo, raki) but I do appreciate whisky etc appear to have shot up in price in the supermarkets. Rooms were comfy and adequate, sleep was disturbed at times by neighbours dog.

Me and my partner have just arrived back from a lovely week staying at this hotel. As we arrived we could see how welcoming all the staff where, our room was basic but was fine and suited us. the hotel was a small family run hotel which was nice as you got to know everyone and there was always a sun bed round pool or you could venture to the beach which wasn't far the guests where varied where they was from but most made effort to say hello. At night it was a 5/10 minute walk to the restaurant but it was worth it As it over looked the beach and they laid on transport for ones that could not manage the walk which was nice of them to do, there was always a few different options on the menu and me being vegetarian was not a problem at all as they would always have something i could eat. The town was a little way out but it was only 1.60 on bus each way but taxis where more expensive at 15 euros one way. The town was lovely and lots to see some lovely little shops and restaurants. There was a little shop next to the hotel which had your basic stuff in which was run by demtri's sister Maria and there mum was always in there to have a chat to and there was a bakery and supermarket down the road aswell. The cleaners always did a good job at keep it all clean and i could not fault them one bit. Haris was on bar and it was nice to have a chat and a few rakis!!!! We and two other guests went to demetri's farm and picked aubergines and peppers which was fun and nice to know our food was freshly grown we also got to see the local village and monastery which was nice to see. The staff at the restaurant where really nice and very hard working Monday nights is greek night and they also had a guitarist one of the other nights. There is a little train trip you can do if you would like to see more culture and we also visited Knossos and spinalonga which was interesting to see. Would we Recommend this hotel yes we are defiantly looking forward to returning next year for 2 weeks.

We stayed at the Thalassi Hotel from the 11th to the 18th September and enjoyed a relaxing and memorable Cretan experience. We arrived at the hotel at 4 am and were warmly greeted by Eva who had got up early to check us in. Over the course of the holiday Eva, her husband Dimitris and all the staff could not have been more friendly to us. We hired a car for a few days during the holiday and got some great tips from Eva about where to go – including some great places not featured in our travel guide. If you want a real Cretan Greek holiday, this is a fantastic hotel to go to. If you are after a holiday in a large resort complex with mock English pubs serving bangers & mash or chicken curry, then you should perhaps book elsewhere!

As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel has expanded in the last few years to now include a restaurant (for lunch and dinner) and beach area approximately 5 minute walk from the hotel. Although this is reached using an underpass, this is now well lit at night and we actually really enjoyed dressing up and leaving to go out for dinner. Dinner is included as part of half board and I can honestly say the food here easily matched the best restaurants we used on previous Greek holidays. The food could not be more local (Greek salad and all olive oil coming from Dimitris’ farm) and meals are quintessentially Greek. If you have a large appetite, you will not go hungry and are easily offered more mains (I easily gained a half stone over the holiday!) Dimitris is a fantastic host with a big personality and he is, rightfully, proud of his hotel and genuinely wants people to enjoy his food, hotel and hospitality. Over the holiday we enjoyed traditional Greek dancing, traditional Greek music and and a magic show – all of which are put on for free. We also saw great care and attention given to residents with mobility problems.

The resort itself is situated in a relatively quiet location but does have a few tavernas, a couple of small supermarkets and a fantastic bakery (highly recommend visiting this!) The hotel itself has about 40 rooms over 3 small blocks and a lovely swimming pool. We went largely for a relaxing hotel and it was great being able to go down to the beach and then come back to the swimming pool before wandering down for dinner. All in all, this was really a great holiday and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for anyone who wants a slice of real Crete!

Thanks Eva & Dimitris for a great holiday!

David & M

Some of the negative reviews are most unfair in our view. We have just spent a week at Thalassi Hotel (12-19 September) and had a really great holiday. If you want a modern, sterile, characterless hotel where the food is the same day after day, and where no-one knows or cares who you are, then the Thalassi isn't for you. However, if you want to experience something different and try genuine Cretan hospitality, then come here. The hotel is in a very quiet area, with only a couple of small supermarkets, taverna, bakery, and a few other small shops. If you want anything more built up, you have to take the bus along the coast. Some may feel too isolated, but we loved it. If you have walking difficulties, again maybe not ideal for you, as there is a 5 minute walk down the road (under the underpass or crossing a road) to the restaurant, but we noticed that some of the staff drove people with difficulty walking there and back.

Eva runs the hotel side, which is welcoming and kept spotlessly clean by her, two hard working very pleasant cleaning ladies, and Harris who helps in the bar. We were warmly welcomed personally on arrival (9.30 pm) and told a meal had been kept for us in the restaurant, which we didn't expect in view of the time. The rooms are good, spacious and although not the most luxurious, have everything you need. We overlooked the pool and bar area, and couldn't fault it. Breakfast is Continental style, served in the breakfast room and you can eat in or out doors. Fruit juice seemed to be drink, rather than juice, and the coffee wasnt great (but we found this to be the case wherever we went), but there was a choice of cereal, Greek yoghurt, honey, jams, melon, cheese, meat, eggs, croissants, toast - so you will never go hungry. Eva is constantly refilling the supplies, so nothing goes stale or is left out for ages - it is all very fresh.

Evening meal is taken in the restaurant with fantastic views over the ocean. Comments about Dimitris 'favouring' guests and giving them the best tables (overlooking the sea) if they buy lots of alcohol just isn't true in our experience. Everyone was welcomed individually every night by Dimitris himself and he seated you at the best available table, wherever that might be. Some nights we were lucky to get the sea view, other nights depending on what time we arrived to eat, we were further into the room. He is a larger than life character, proud of his food and restaurant, and only wants to make sure you are having good food and a good holiday. We were often given complimentary glass of Raki, or extra starters or extra mains if you wanted them. If you didn't fancy the dessert, we were offered ice cream. Nothing was too much trouble, and Dimitris, Mark and the two delightful waitresses did everything to make your evenings enjoyable.

Instead of having banks of standard hotel food from which to serve yourself, you are treated to a starter (usually a form of Greek salad plus an accompanying dish such as stuffed vine leaves, stuffed vegetables or cheese dish) plus lovely bread. There was a choice of three main meals, served to you at your table so no queuing like in a canteen, all locally sourced and very tasty, portions are large!! The food is typically Greek rather than standard hotel food, which was just perfect. If there isn't anything you like, Dimitris will make sure something is prepared for you. Again, couldn't criticise any of it.

Dimitris and Eva produce their own olive oil which is wonderful. We bought some to bring home to remind us of our lovely meals!

There are only about 40 rooms so you soon get to know your fellow guests, and although there were all nationalities there, everyone acknowledged you, even with just a nod of the head if your Russian or Italian wasn't up to much!

there isn't much to do after your evening meal, which was the only thing we missed - after strolling back to the hotel you could sit round the pool/bar area and socialise, but there wasn't really anywhere else to walk to,or have a coffee. We spent most evenings on our balcony or just reading. This suited us, but if you want a vibrant nightlife you should have gone to Malia!! It does make you really relax and switch off though.

All in all, if you want a real chill out holiday, with good food, great hospitality, then give the Thalassi a try. Eva and Dimitris make you feel like part of an extended Greek family, and it is very clear that they care about their guests. I don't know many other hotels where you get a hug and kiss goodbye, and are asked to email to say you have got home safely. We are not a couple who spend every night drinking and mixing, we enjoy our own company, but it was impossible not to be part of this very warm and welcoming family hotel. We had the most relaxing enjoyable holiday we have had for many years and don't understand the negative reviews. I can only assume they expected the soulless, impersonal, bland holiday hotels that are so prevalent in Spain, and couldn't cope with hoteliers who actually know the names of their guests and care that they have had a good holiday.

We will definitely be back in the future. Sorry this is such a long review, but the unfair negative comments annoyed me!!

We stayed at this hotel at the beginning of September and had a fantastic time. Before our arrival we emailed the hotel to make a request for a sea view room and when we arrived we were not disappointed. Room was nice, spacious and clean. Eva went out of her way to go above and beyond to be helpful and friendly. Meals in the restaurant were nice (vegetarians are advised to let the hotel know in advance as you will only be given the meat options, however these were delicious). Dimitri is a larger than life character and would always go out of his way to make sure you were enjoying the food. All the staff were really friendly and helpful.

The pool area was really nice and the bar reasonably priced. Enjoyed sitting round the pool in the evening with great company.

A great hotel and would recommend for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Sue, Eddie and Christie.

Thanks Eva and Dimitris for a great holiday.
