“A quiet little piece of heaven in Sri Lanka”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

This was by far the best experience we had in Sri Lanka. We stayed here for a week at the end of our trip (disastrous flooding further north) and were just glad to stop and relax.
Our room was fabulous, Frette linens, King Koil mattress, the Ipod loaded with tunes, the Bose system, egg shaped jacuzzi, huge rainfall shower. I could go on and on. The only decent expresso we had the whole trip was using the Nespresso system in the room (that tells you a lot about Sri Lankan coffee making expertise)
The pools were lovely, view from our room directly on to the beach, the crash of the waves lulling us to sleep, pure bliss.
Downsides were: the beach was a bit narrow, there were always a couple vendors hanging around just outside the gates and the sea was very rough, but nothing's perfect.
We loved the themed evenings, and breakfast buffet was super, lots of fresh fruit and sri lankan food.

Our second stay. A lovely, interesting hotel on a wonderful long and sandy beach on the Indian Ocean. If you want razmataz and shops next door this is not for you. But, if you want peace, quiet, space, excellent service from the smiling, happy staff and comfortable rooms, then you will not be disappointed. The restaurant is superb. Chef Kumar constantly produces excellent food which is of high quality from a varied menu, equal to good restaurants in the UK. We could not have wished for a more delightful stay and we will be back again.

Stayed for five nights at the end of a tour of Sri Lanka. The hotel sits on a plot of land between the main coast road & the sea, but (as the name of the hotel suggests) it is built in the style of an old fortress with high walls at the front & sides, so you are not aware of the outside world. A nice touch is the big gates through which you are welcomed through on arrival. The welcome itself is very nice, cold towels & a cold drink whilst the formalities are conducted. It may be a better idea to do the hotel tour after people have settled in a little rather than when you are hot & bothered & carrying hand luggage as we were.

The rooms are lovely, nicely laid out & very well appointed. We had a ground floor beach room & spent most of our time on beds just outside the room which was peaceful (apart from the very noisy squirrels) and had plenty of shade.

Once you get your head around the different menu's - for one restaurant, we found the food to be pretty good, not great, but pretty good. Service was very good - and the staff were all incredibly friendly.

So, what stops it getting the 5 stars? We had an ongoing problem with the air conditioning in the room, which no matter what we did, or the hotel did - never managed to get the temperature cool enough for sleeping. Mostly it remained at 23 degrees, with the very odd dip to 22. The management didn't really deal with this & we just lived with it.

The other thing that surprised me was that no-one from the pool bar & restaurant ever came to the beds outside the rooms (about 50 metres), so if we wanted a drink we had to go to the bar. Only a small point, but in similar hotels we have had cold towels, frozen fruit & cold fruit juice brought to the chair.

Sadly, we stayed for only one night.
However...I could not fault anything.
The room was absolutely terrific..exceptionally well appointed tecnologically..tv,wifi,ipod connectivity,,bathroom was amazing and the view superb.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
We dined a la carte on a table right next to the pool and the entertainment ,it was wonderful.
Would definitely recommend it.

We have just retunred from a very special week at The Fortress. This boutique hotel is stunning. Beautiful position, enormous well appointed rooms, polite, attentive and helpful staff and great food with plenty of choice. Drinks reasonably priced. This hotel deserves all the praise heaped on it in previous reviews. This is a truely world class hotel, go on treat yourselves you will not be disapointed!

Room tip- Ocean view rooms are definitely worth having to wake up with the sight and sound of the ocean from your elevated bed position.

Nothing to do with the hotel but beware of the beach and street hawkers who can be persistant and a nuisance.

Room Tip: Ocean view definitely worth having. Your bed is eleveated so if you sleep with blind open you can no...

I have a preference these days for boutique hotels as opposed to large corporate ones. Staff quickly get to know you and service tends to be more personal and this is certainly the case with the Fortress. Completed in 2007 this is still a relatively new hotel and this shows in the decor and fitments. We had 7 nights in a Fortress room and 1 in a ground floor sea view. The Fortress rooms open onto a garden on the ground floor which is about 5 m long with a 7 metre high wall at the end which can be quite claustrophobic so if you can afford it get one of the rooms facing the sea (various rates and specs). Food and drink is not that expensive for a five star but still twice that of local restaurants. We paid around GBP80 for 3 courses a l c with a bottle of wine and less (about 60) on the buffet nights. Food was good quality and the Sri Lankan dishes very good. There were a couple of theme nights in the Pepper restaurant sea food and Sri Lankan. Rooms were very large with equally roomy bathrooms. Our Fortress room was about 9 x 5 metres with a very comfortable super king bed but why do hotels put only one chair in bedrooms for 2 people? If you want to have a drink in the room or watch one of the free loan DVD's or a bit of telly someone has to sit on the bed!! The sea view room was slightly smaller but being on the ground floor had French windows opening onto the lawn which stretched down to the sea. Handy position for tuk-tuk (about LKR 1000 return) to Unawatuna tourist area where there a many local budget priced restaurants. All in all a very comfortable hotel with helpful friendly staff.

Room Tip: If you have to have a Fortress room try for a corner one. Room 22 is massive.

We are on our last day of a 9 night stay in the Fortress. We have had a superb relaxing stay in a fabulous spacious ocean view room. Just fabulous to sleep with the sound of waves in the distance. Restaurant food was faultless, we ate lots of fish and the Fortress curry special is a must.
Everything was spotlessly clean, the towels and bed linen all had an aromatherapy fragrance to them. There is a large free standing bath with massage jets which was heavenly !
Although, outside of the hotel there is virtually nothing to visit and quite dangerous to walk, we were happy to just stay around the hotel and took a tuk tuk to nearby Unawatuna, to the king fisher restaurant a couple of times which took approx. 15 mins.
We had massages and pedicures which were fabulous. Would definitely stay here again. Hotel has won lots of awards which are on display and is part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Next stop Maldives for 4 nights!

Room Tip: All rooms are fabulous but we had an Ocean view which was upstairs. Ground floor had access onto th...
