“Absolutely wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013 via mobile

We have just got back from a fantastic weekend at the Fortress. The hotel is beautifully finished with the central point being the wonderful pool which gives away to the rolling ocean. The rooms are very comfortable and have great amenities - decent sized fridge, pod coffee machine and fabulous bath.

The service by all the staff was excellent. We especially enjoyed the spa services - sublime indeed.

All very much worth the 2 hour drive.

Came here on honeymoon (Trailfinders).

It's a lovely place - but maybe not absolutely breathtaking. Our room was lovely, with a view over the pool. The pool itself was great - you are right next to the ocean.

The food I found was very good - I like curries (tho can't handle the hot ones!) so had lots of the local fish + other curries with "country" (red) rice. Well up to the standards of a good restaurant in the UK.

The location is reasonable - you can get to a lot of small attractions by tuk-tuk (ayurvedic gardens, Mirissa beach, boat tour on a lake, Koggala stilt fishermen, Galle, turtle sanctuary) but it's right by the main Colombo road. All of the above are interesting, but not fantastic. The hotel in itself is small and there's not a whole lot to do inside. Staff and cleanliness standards to me were very good.

The atmosphere is quite tropical in a general way but also less "picture postcard" than you might expect - for me this is definitely a good thing - the ocean is crashing right next to the pool (not for swimming), there were often high winds, and every afternoon for a brief thunderstorm the rain was bouncing off the pool.

One caution - there are tuk-tuk drivers outside who will understandably try to get your custom. We ended up with one for our week there, he was very helpful and took us to the above. Against my better judgement however we ended up in his house at his invitation on the last night (I'm blaming my wife who was too embarrassed to go with my refusal..!) and were comprehensively guilt-tripped for money. This was a highly embarrassing and to be honest potentially dangerous situation. We should have known better. This is a difficult area particularly given the tsunami and the effects it had on people's lives.

Room Tip: definitely looking over the ocean and the pool.

Pickup at the airport was perfect and the hotel charge was $170, the journey via the expressway took about 3 hours in total, its Colombo and airport location that takes all the time so be prepared.
Arrived at the hotel, was expecting it to be more Galle than outside a few km's away. The hotel is basically what you see in the pictures, nothing more nothing less. We were given a Ocen view room on the upper floor which was great and has very good views of the ocean, much the same for all of them.

Rooms are ok, nothing special, comforatable but lacking any form of pwer sockets for the modern traveller really you need to hunt for them and they all in the wrong place. Part from that bigh rooms nothing to be unhappy about.

Small hotel 53 rooms about in all so not overcrowded and people generally dont rush to do anything so breakfast is no surprise to not see many people. The food is overall very good, excellent in fact though did get food poisoning from the last night seafood buffet, bad timing.

The pool and the views from it are great, always a nice stiff breeze, perfect with the sunny weather though it does get overcast a lot. Service around the pool and attention is very good, drinks ans coktails are very good and with all food and beverage very reasonably priced so no worries there.

Gym is good, has all the equipment and treadmills you need and very nicely air conditioned!!

There is not really anything to do outside of the hotel as there is really nothing worth seeing outside. As people say for swimming the sea current is strong and there are sagfe area but be careful the sea is powerful here even further up the beach where most people walk up to for a dip.

Happy hour is 18.00-19.00 and its just 20% off the drinks, very boring. Then the restuarant does not open until 19.30 which is a touch strange. The hours between 17.00 and 19.30 are a bit boring and the hotel need to spice it up and put out proper seating on the grass or something as the bar area sucks big time. Worst hotel bar ever, more like someones kitchen and breakfast bar.

Did the Yala safari for one day, be ware that it takes about 3 hours to get there and 3 hours back. Its 325$ for the half day safari and we were very lucky we saw all the widllife including the leopards up close. The next day people from the hotel saw nothing, so thats also a thing to bare in mind.

Overall for a boutique hotel it was a b and not a B for boutique. Could be much better. Time for another $170 ride to the airport.

If you travel business class on Sri Lankan its exceptional through the airport using the Silk route. No hassle at all they take care of it all.

We sTayed for a week in October and had a fantastic time. The rooms were spacious, stylish and well appointed. The staff were the friendliest you can imagine. The food was good, pricier than outside the hotel but you expect that. Great pool, really nice and long which meant for morning lengths it was perfect. We took a couple of excursions via the hotel and the drivers were fantastic, and the cars brand new and very comfortable 4x4s.

The beach was perfect for nice long afternoon strolls. Tuk Turks are available right outside the hotel and are a really reasonable way to see more of the surrounding area.

We enjoyed some treatments in the spa which were great, the only negative is the treatment rooms are located on the roadside part of the building and the road noise is in the background.

All in all we had a great time. We have and will keep recommending it and hope to return one day.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are Worth the extra. Sunsets are perfect

A beautiful hotel with friendly and super staff. Overall we had a great stay in the largest room I have ever stayed in. The staff are super, always smiling and make the stay very pleasant. We could not get a sea facing room, but I guess that was our own fault booking so late. Love that breakfast goes on till 11 and the pizza oven is open all afternoon. The pool is super size and loved the lights at night. Overall great, just a shame the weather was so bad this weekend.
