The Fortress Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Koggala
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 10, 2012

The Fortress is a wonderful property. It has 53 rooms which are well designed and all sea facing. The room comes with every convenience and is very comfortable. However we felt that the resort will find it difficult to sustain such prices. There is not beach access at the Fortress and although the pool is wonderful, this is a big disadvantage. They only have one restaurant, although the food is excellent, the service is poor and slow. It is hard to justify 5 star prices when they can't offer a variety of cuisine. A lovely place to base yourself and explore the South Coast of Sri Lanka. There are many wonderful beaches and restaurants not far away to discover and the Fortress is a great place to come back to each evening.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally wonderful as they have a balcony and ocean view.

The Fortress is beyond doubt one of the nicest hotels we've ever stayed in. The rooms, food and general service were all delivered to an exceptionally high standard.

We got married in the garden at the hotel and it was a lovely experience, although this is the only area that the hotel let itself down. Unfortunately the hotel used suppliers who, in our opinion, delivered substandard photography and flowers and, when it began to rain during our ceremony, staff were unprepared and failed to even offer me an umbrella. That said, the manager and wedding coordinator took our complaints very seriously and went over and above to make sure that we felt more positive before we left.

All in all, this is a great place to stay, especially if you want a more westernised luxury escape to finish your holiday. We'd certainly recommend it, but perhaps not for a wedding.

Room Tip: Choose ocean view - the sunsets are beautiful

We were very fortunate to have been upgraded from an Ocean View room to a Presidential Suite (also referred to as a Fortress Residence room as per the official website), and this was our anniversary holiday and so the hotel kindly upgraded us as their way of making it special for us during our stay there. 'Mind-blowing' was the word that springs to mind, when I recall the absolutely jaw dropping room we were given.

From the grand entrance (you have a set of heavy wooden doors you enter through, where there is a hallway, prior to entering through another set to get into your suite - very secure and as the hotel name suggests!), to the enormous lounge, bedroom, and stunning bathroom. The attention to detail was outstanding, and the décor was very lavish and chic, and you felt they really went all the way to make their guests feel at home and pampered.

The suite had very high ceilings in each room, along with dark wooden flooring, whilst the bathroom was designed in marble and had a jacuzzi, along with a huge separate shower room and separate toilet, and his and hers sinks, along with wardrobes to hang clothes. The lounge was fully equipped with Bose surround sound system and iPod dock, along with a huge plasma screen. Our balcony overlooked the pool area (complete with stone baking pizza area), and you had a fantastic view of the sea from the room. In addition, we had our own private plunge pool out on the balcony. Food in this hotel was awesome, and had the best seafood I've experienced.

There was a seafood BBQ night, which provided you with the best lobster, crab, prawns (called 'lagoon' prawns, and are much bigger than tiger prawns), different types of fish, and many other delicious foods available, all cooked in front of you. The quality of food was what you could have expected from a 5 star hotel, and it lived up to expectations completely.

I noted that the hotel actually felt very exclusive due to the low number of rooms and people staying, so more of a boutique hotel than your average chain. The friendly hotel staff told me that they wanted to keep the hotel like this, rather than expand and have more rooms, which would ultimately sacrifice the serenity of this paradise.

Words cannot do justice to this experience. If you are considering staying in Galle when you come to Sri Lanka, please look no further....you will NOT be disappointed....this hotel is highly recommended!!

Many thanks to all the staff who made our anniversary a very special and memorable one!!

This hotel was the largest property that we stayed at in Sri Lanka. Yes it was beautiful with modern luxury and rooms were large and very comfortable. This hotel felt more westernized than the other hotels we stayed in and I can understand this may suit some travellers, however we enjoyed staying at the small luxury boutique hotels .... I guess it depends what sort of experience you are looking for. Everything was very high standard and the buffet breakfast was fantastic.

Very nice hotel! The rooms were very spacious (we had a room at the short end of the rectangle, i think it is a family room) it had a wide corridor in which the extra bed for our 5 yr old and the cot for our 2 yr old fit perfectly (and left us with some privacy!). The food was great (sea food is their specialty) and the pool was amazing. It stretches along the hotel and has sea view. Galle is nearby for excursions. Staff very nice and they had a wonderful choir singing xmas carols on Dec 24 when they put up the xmas tree. Definitively can recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: family rooms are very spacious

I cannot embellish on any more comments that havn't already been said about this piece of Paradise.
We had an ocean view room which without doubt is the best room to book and when you open the door you will see why.
Every attention to detail and every whim catered for...the bathroom is huge and the bed the most comfortable we have ever slept in!
Everything has already been said about this hotel in previous reviews which was what prompted us to book and on every level it surpassed our expectations!
The staff are amongst the most attentive and helpful we have ever come across and you cannot help but fall in love with their gentle and smiling dispositions...they aim to please you whatever your request.
If you are visiting Sri Lanka then this hotel is the only place to be and the fact that the new highway is now open a journey that used to take 3-4 hours now only takes 2!
Thank you to the Fortress for a truly memorable stay!

Flight was late but transport waiting. Long transfer on poor roads except for new Southern Expressway. Excellent greeting not just on arrival but throughout our stay. Great breakfast with choices for any taste and reasonable prices for evening meals . We had only booked for one week and tried to extend but there was no rooms.
Would advise anyone to take on board one of the local guides who are good at arranging sights to see and work for a pittance. Be sure they will find you.
