We stayed at the fortress for 6 nights in october, having spent the first week of our holidays in the maldives (we will definately be going back to the maldives but I wouldn't stay at the Fortress again)!!
This is a great hotel but a 5* rating means that this hotel still has some work to do in order to maintain that level of rating. The rooms are fabulous, we stayed in an Ocean Loft for the first 3 nights and then we paid to upgrade to the Residence for the last 3 nights of our stay- the Residence is amazing and even has a tv in the bathroom!!
So what didn't we like? Firstly, being so close the sea means that the hotel is constantly being battered by the elements and we found that there was a constant smell of damp in the room during our entire stay. Nothing ever seemed dry, the sheets felt somewhat sticky,it might just be us but it was something we couldn't get used to! Also for a 5* star hotel you would think that shower gel would be a bog standard addition to the bathroom, but no, no shower gel was provided in our Ocean Loft- I find this incredible and totally unacceptable of a 5 * establishment. One of the guys mentioned to us that there was some kind of supply issue with the Aesop toiletries that the hotel normally provides, but if there was a supply issue then they should have sourced alternatives. Interestingly enough when we moved to the Residence there were Aesop toiletries, so the fact that the hotel is keeping these for guests in their very top room kind of stuck in my throat a little!!
As mentioned by other reviewers, there is only one restaurant and if you were there for a very long time I think this would get a bit tedious, although the food was very good whilst we were there. The staff are very attentive but the service was at times very slow, we had to ask where our food was on a couple of occasions and in a 5* hotel you shouldn't have to do this.
The best thing about this hotel is the efforts of the staff, Prasanna in the restaurant really knows what he is doing and he looked after us well. Jin, from front desk was also great.
The fact that the hotel is a 4.5 hour transfer from the airport also doesn't do it any favours, as the journey is exhausting and it made us want to just stay in the hotel once we were there, rather than try any excursions. If you want to see what Sri Lanka has to offer then I think you need to be in the north rather than in the south as things are just too far to travel to in the car, and we couldn' t face it!
Our main view of the hotel is that it is trying very hard but Sri Lanka somehow isn't quite ready for this hotel, or rather the area that it is in. The staff try very hard but they don't quite match the 5* rating. We had a very nice stay but I think there are still things that need to be looked at.

We're a family of four, our children are aged 6 and 8. Having spent many holidays at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel (Dubai) we were convinced that this would be a benchmark difficult to surpass. A fact confirmed by some disappointing stays at supposedly 5* resorts in Europe!

This year we decided on a family holiday with a difference, more rest and relaxation and less waterslides, kids club, crowds etc....
We booked a two week stay at The Fortress. After a 10.5 hour flight and 4.5 hour transfer we were pretty exhausted when we arrived at the hotel.......but all this was forgotten the minute we stepped through the 25ft arched wooden doors!

We were greeted with a magnificent view through the open lobby, across the infinity pool, onto the glorious Indian Ocean. We were immediately escorted to our room; no check-in desk, no queues, all this was done in the comfort of our room whilst supping our welcome cocktails.

The Room
We chose a ground floor Beach View room and the kids initial reaction, which was a very loud "WOW!!!!", told us we had made the right decision.
First off, the boys toys - LCD TV, Bose surround system, 3 thousand tracks on the iPOD, well stocked mini bar and a Nespresso machine!
A fine selection of teas and complimentary water.
The bed is HUGE!
The seating area converted into a very comfortable bed for the children, which the staff did for us every night.
The bathroom was superb, twin basins, a jacuzzi bath big enough for two (adults) and a shower cubicle which often had the four of us in it at the same time!

The Restaurant
There is only one restaurant, but to be honest, this made it all the more special. This is a small hotel with an emphasis on making you feel comfortable and relaxed. In no time at all, we felt as though we were staying at a wealthy friend's home! We had every meal al fresco, overlooking the sea. But what if it rains? No problem the staff just pull down the see-through shutters, you’re protected from the elements but still ‘outdoors’…….magic!
The service was very personal and attentive but never intrusive.

Breakfast was heaven because there was not one sausage or rasher of bacon to be seen which meant our children had to experiment with "alien" foods like fruit, cereal and toast. You must try the Sri Lankan breakfast dishes; rice hopper filled with a mild curry and sambol. Obviously, there is the obligatory egg/omlette/waffle station as well as a full selection of salads/fruits and fresh juices made to order.

We ate at the restaurant every night of our 2 week stay and thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully prepared and presented meals. They even managed to make a simple kids meal look like something Gordon Ramsay would be proud of.

Evening entertainment
A Buffet/BBQ night which is a great way to sample the menu whilst watching traditional Sri Lankan dance, and a live mellow-jazz night.

Chef Wijerkon
Wijerkon is an absolute master-chef and nothing was too much trouble. We loved the dishes so much that we asked him to share his ‘secrets’. Which he gladly did by offering us a couple of cookery lessons. We learned how to make some local dishes, black pepper crab, coconut rice, sambol, red lentils, black pork curry etc…..the food was then presented to us (along with some other dishes they had prepared) at our own private buffet!

Our Special Night -
My wife had a ‘special’ birthday whilst on holiday. The GM, Axel arranged a meal in their glass sided wine cellar. An eight course affair (sushi, lagoon prawns, fish, lobster, even Kangaroo!), private room and our own butler..........absolute heaven! And the kids tried (and liked) every course!

The Pool/Beach
A huge 50 metre t-shaped infinity pool which even during full occupancy never felt crowded. No fighting for the sun-loungers which all face the ocean, add to that a cooling westerly breeze and the roar of the Indian Ocean, now that’s R&R.
There’s also a smaller pool by the restaurant.

We couldn’t swim off the main beach as it was the wrong time of year and the currents were too strong. However there is a smaller reef-protected beach just to the left of the hotel that’s more than adequate for a dip. But don’t leave the kids unattended as it’s still too strong for the younger children.

Kids
Our biggest fear was how the kids would feel in a small luxury hotel and how to keep them entertained for two weeks. Well, we needn’t have worried, our kids loved it. They discovered a new level of independence, possible only because everything is so close by….room, pool, restaurant…..no more having to pack up everything poolside just to make ‘quick visit’ to the room!
There’s a kids room with a TV, some games and a PS2…..doesn’t sound like much but our two didn’t need any more.

The Staff
Friendly, warm and ever so helpful. Special thanks to the restaurant manager, Asela, who ensured that our every need was catered for and for his ‘wicked’ sense of humour!
Rasika, for giving us that extra-special care and attention.
And the same goes for Mudhitha and Lasitha……thank you.

SPA/Gym
A well stocked gym containing all the latest equipment necessary to run, cycle, cross-train, pump some iron…..if you’re that way inclined! A special thanks to Dayal for the 1-2-1 gym sessions!
The Spa offered some great treatments from full-body massages to facials; There’s even a resident Ayurvedic practitioner who’ll sort out your inner ‘woes’! If that’s too much like hard work, just relax in their outdoor Jacuzzi!

Our only gripe, and this is being completely hyper-critical, is that we would have preferred the location of the Spa/Gym to be sea-facing. Unfortunately the logistics of the hotel does not make this possible.

Would we go again?
We’re already planning our next visit there!
