We've heard quite some good stories about this place, but the two times we visited for dinner we were disappointed.

The service was very slow both of the time. To be fair, one of the evenings it was quite busy, but the other one it was half full at best. Still our waiter let us wait unusually long for handing out the menu, serving food and beverages, forgot about things. Even the bill took them more than 15 minutes.

The food itself was ok, but not as good as the words in the menu would suggest. Putting this into perspective, we've seen far better quality of food and service in Sri Lanka's South while even paying less.

Not sure if we caught two bad days of if it's always like that.

Just at that moment when you've had enough of rice and curry but you're not ready to go back to your home cooking enter Cafe Ceylon! Not only is this lovely local restaurant located in beautiful gardens just across the road from a fantastic swimming beach - the food is fantastic, tasty and wonderfully healthy. Using lots of local ingredients Cafe Ceylon fusions Sri Lankan, Whole Foods and Euro and does it spectacularly well. Over a weekend I tried a fantastic salad with homemade paneer and manioc chips, the Green Goddess smoothie (to die for), stuffed snake gourd and sweet potato fries - all super yummy. Wait - I lie - I also tried the banana desert which you must not miss! This is a great place for any time of the day when you need a welcome respite from the beach heat and a tasty and nutritious pick me up. The music and original posters from Sri Lankan airlines as well as the professional staff all make for a wonderfully friendly and relaxed ambience as well.

We went to Cafe Ceylon twice during our stay in Ahangama/Koggala. The food was very nice every single time, they are using a lot of different local veg and fruit (e.g. snake gourd (I never heard of this one before and I absolutely love it!!), plantains, pumpkins etc.), high five for that! We had Lagoon Oysters - fresh and delicious, Cuttlefish Salad, Sesame Crusted Tuna, Tiger Prawns Curry and Baked Snake Gourd with Kurakkan Roti, and all of these were delicious! (To be honest, I am still dreaming about them :)) We also tried some desserts - Mango Melba and Hakuru Bananas, which were fine, but unfortunately not as good as the starters and mains. As I mentioned in the headline, the food is on the more expensive side when compared to other restaurants in Sri Lanka, but most dishes are worth the money. And don't forget to try the Arrack (local coconut alcohol)!

We went cafe Ceylon after an afternoon and evening at Ahangama beach. The walk through they gardens leads you to a lovely open dining area, in which we were surprised to find a massive television screen.
The food was lovely and the service was excellent despite the restaurant being very busy!
We would recommend the tuna burgers and the fish and chips. A restaurant worth travelling to.
