My holiday in Sri Lanka lasted 10 nights, staying in 7 hotels/resorts, and this was my least favourite. Compared to all the others the food was basic and the a la carte dinner disappointing. The room was spacious and had all the necessary requirements, however it seemed very commercial. The staff were friendly, however I didn't feel as welcome as in the others. Overall this felt more of a stopover/business hotel than a warm, friendly, family holiday stay.

Room Tip: All rooms in a 'terrace style'. If you can get a room overlooking the pool it may be worthwh...

Excellent hotel. Only complaint about the rooms - the towel racks are too high in the shower. Please move them down - most Sri Lankan ladies are tiny and cannot reach them without help. Also think dinner should be less fussy - a simple selection of Lankan curry vs Lankan Chinese vs burger/chicken/fried fish/chips should suffice. The Lankan and American breakfasts were excellent. There's no point in cooking any food, let alone Western food, badly. I am still traumatised by my horrid, flaccid, salty chicken terrine and minestrone.

Room Tip: 121 is a nice room - very spacious.

Well located, Big clean rooms.. price are ok for luxurious bedding and etc..restaurant is in the outside of the lobby that's bit odd to me.. they have good bread rolls and bakery stuff at the breakfast buffet.. only problem i saw was the ant z and bug z every where even in the pool.. This place is ideal if you are going to kataragama .

Its very difficult to find a good hotel in Katharagama. This place is ideal, while it may not deliver the usual 4 star standards, it's clean and service is good. Food is also good and they are quite flexible, especially with different times if anyone wants to go to the poojas. The pool is great and rooms quite spacious

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the restaurant have less insects.

We also went to Katharagama to go on an evening safari in Yala. It is well located for this. The hotel checked us in promptly to our large and spotlessly clean rooms. The design layout of the hotel is odd as you have to walk out to a separate wing that is quite grand in itself. We wanted to have lunch in the coffee shop but we were steered towards the restaurant and enjoyed lunch there. After our safari we returned to have a very pleasant swim in the pool that we had all to ourselves. The staff here are all very friendly and helpful. We had a small issue with the operation of the room safe but the manager very quicky sorted this out to our satisfaction. The buffet dinner was not the best we had on our 18 day tour but it was satisfactory. It is strange that the restaurant is outside the lobby of the hotel but it is comfortable and cool. The sweet bread rolls from the bakery at the front were the best we have ever had and the baked goods at the breakfast buffet were excellent.
The Mandara hotels we stayed at had the most luxurious bedding and doonas. Great nights sleep at both places. Wish we could have stayed longer

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are good here

the rooms are clean and up to its "4 star" standards..but the food quality, choice and the restaurant has gone down so badly, annually i have done this trip for the last 5 yrs..went for dinner n the staff offered a table which was not cleaned after its being used, drink order took so long that we were almost done with d main meal..FYI Srilankan is not spelt "Srilanken", same way prawns r not "Pruwns",n german is not "Germen", being 4 star this is just a disgrace..this is the only 4 star hotel close to kataragama and people pay a lot to stay and for a good meal, the food was just plain and cold and we cannot expect this with a Srilankan "4 star" hotel,,

One of the few very comfortable and good hotels on the Thissmaharama - Katharagama sector.

We arrived very late, really travel weary.

Check in was very efficient by the night staff, very courteous and no rough edges that normally irritate a travel weary guest, hotel gets an excellent mark.

The kitchen rose to the occasion to ruffle up a snappy dinner via room service. Rooms are exceedingly clean and comfortable, bathrooms very good.

The buffet was a good spread,

One restaurant steward was rather loose by trying to serve me a cup from an adjoining table, during tea service at breakfast on the pretext it was not used by the guest!!!

Some restaurant staff still have a problem about serving local Sri Lankan guests while bending backwards to please foreign tourists. A GUEST IS ALWAYS A GUEST DESRVING SAME COURTESIES IRRESPECTIVE OF NATIONALITIES, A HOTEL SURVIVES ON CLIENTS AND NOT ON DISCRIMINATIONS".

The lunch was excellent, once again a bouquet to the Chef and the Restaurant for an excellently prepared very tasty buffet.

The charge however for the Sri Lankan lunch buffet was exceedingly high by Sri Lanka standards and the location Rs. 1200/- per head plus additional 12% VAT plus 10% service charge. Taste & quality is one thing but ripping off on a rice and curry meal, is something to be ashamed of. That too by relegating us to the non air conditioned section saying that the air conditioned area was reserved for a group, who never turned up till we left!!.

These were the only 2 jarring incidents on an otherwise perfect stay. Goes to show how two small mistakes can spoil a lot of good work and effort of many.

I hope the hotel will notice & rectify as they can certainly benefit now, as a new International airport & harbour have just opened up.

Room Tip: The chalets are very good
