“Good Hotel with Great Staff Great Food & Fantastic Service.”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

We have just spent 2 weeks at Palm Village Hotel, The Management & staff are superb, very friendly, very helpful & nothing is too much trouble for them, they are constantly cleaning the Hotel, Pool & Gardens, they even sweep the sand outside the gate to the beach. The staff in the restaurant are brilliant, a special mention for Patrick, Indika, Bandula, Dhatsian, Jude & Neil, ( These were our favourites) they were brilliant, Our son celebrated his 16th Birthday whilst we were there, they made a Cake and decorated the table for him, they were brilliant, even the room boys made designs with the towels too, its certainly a birthday he won't forget.
We had a room on the ground floor that opened on to the lovely garden, but being sandy we constantly walked sand into the room, so maybe a mat at the door would be helpful to wipe your feet before entering. The pool attendants will put sunbeds wherever you want them, get the cushions and towels for you as well, in fact you barely need to lift a finger to do anything as there is always someone there who does it for you, in fact you get 5* service from the staff at all times.
There are a few cats who patrol the hotel, a couple of whom we took to feeding, (even bought cat food for them) there is a small ginger one who is very vocal, and affectionate, we think they are tolerated by the hotel, but we hope they also feed them.
The gardens are used for wedding photographs by a lot of people, as they are a lovely setting for photos, we are going to see if our daughter might consider having her wedding there. if we can afford to.
We went on a couple of excursions whilst we were here, some with our travel operator, and some with Sam who waits at the Gate or on the beach, He is very friendly, and became a friend to us, so we can recommend him for trips, we weren't too impressed with Sydney, we used him once to go into Negombo, his constant snorting got on our nerves, we couldn't have listened to it for long journeys.
In all we had a very relaxing time at the hotel, when we weren't out on trips, and would recommend it to our friends, we have made some lovely friends there, it was sad to leave and hope to be able to return soon.
The negative to the hotel that some people mention is it needs a lick of paint and some TLC, also the air conditioning needs updating, they have built a new part to the hotel for weddings and parties which should be finished soon, this means that guests wont be disturbed anymore, so they do listen and try to rectify things for guests. all we can say is don't judge it until you have tried it, believe us you wont be disappointed. Spent two weeks at the Palm Village; the staff were the most helpfull, from the ladies at the front desk, all the way to the hardworking gardeners, always had smiles on there faces; special thanks to the management who made our forty ninth anniversay even more special by baking a cake, an unexpected treat, also the I T manager who helped with my laptop,Room manager & room boys for there creative bed decor; and all the staff; thank you very much. Last but not least the curries and the local dishes were delicious. Gerry & Mary de Zilva

For complete relaxation and peace, this is the hotel to stay at. The staff treat guests like royalty, nothing is too much trouble for them and they are so smiley and friendly, that it was sad to leave at the end of 2 weeks, as they were by that time like friends. We had a room on the ground floor to the right of the pool and this was great, as we were in and out all day and it saved walking up and down the spiral stairway. It also gave me the opportunity to feed the 4 beautiful cats that live (are tolerated) in the grounds. There are also chipmunks which will feed from your hand and a lovely dog, which is chased out every time the staff see it, but which I fed when I was out on the beach.
The day Reception staff are very efficient and helpful, the gardens are immaculate and being tended all the time, the pool is sparkling clear and the building itself is cleaned to within an inch of its life! Everyone works so very, very hard here and they are paid peanuts, so we tipped everyone 250rs when we left, pool, garden and kitchen staff – the lot!
The food is just fabulous, but if you do not like curry (then why are you coming to Sri Lanka?!), there is usually a European option, or the chefs will make you something. My husband and I are both vegetarian and it was a delight not to be treated like pariahs.
The only slight downside to this location, like a lot of locations in Sri Lanka, is that it is inadvisable to swim from the beach and there is nothing around nearby to do, but there are a few little shops over the road.
If you do decide to go on any excursions, use Sydney, the taxi driver who comes into the hotel. He has to pay a percentage of any trips he organises to the hotel, so maybe come to an arrangement with him to lower his price slightly and not tell the hotel where you’ve been with him. He’s very honest, so you can leave your belongings with him in the taxi while you go out and do things, so you don’t have to carry them round with you. There is also Sam, who hangs around the gate to try and sell you tours. We didn’t use him, because he kept nagging us, but perhaps he’s ok.
This hotel is not 5* and there is no spa, but it is made up for by the whole relaxing manner that it operates by. I would definitely return, as the staff are just so lovely.

Room Tip: Stay on the ground floor, it's very safe and is so convenient.

We stayed here for 10 nights in March for our Honeymoon. The rooms are fairly basic but clean, the staff could not do enough for us, the gardens are stunning, great pool and the food was excellent. We booked through Mercury Direct and the Rep Ernest was very helpful. We hope to go back again soon.

Room Tip: We loved our ground floor room as you can step straight out into the lovely gardens with easy access...

With a taxi rather easy access from the airport, good place to recover from your flight. Right on the beach, although a gigantic pipe disturbs a romantic view there. Rooms are basic, bathroom is renovated and is ok. Garden is really pleasant. We had a buffet for lunch and for dinner, both different mealchoices and tasted real good. Musical entertainment during dinner. Is frequented by groups. Staff is very friendly.

This place is really far from the Colombo City also really far from the airport. Access roads are really bad. The infrastructure is old and shabby. Once it used to be a good hotel not it is falling apart due to lack of maintenance. The fan didnt work in our room at first and took around half an hour to repair with us sitting tired in the room after a long journey. The place is full of house lizards. Rooms are Ok. The pool is good size and is very clean. The beach is also ok, but nothing to write home about. It is not worth paying 65USD + taxes. Please avoid this hotel if you dont wanna waste your money. The restaurant staff are very rude. They have only one ala catre menu and on asking for a second one (coz we were a group of 5) the waiter got aggressive and switched off our fan. The musicians at dinner were great and made the evening enjoyable. Buffet spread is very poor to say the least. Better hotels are available in Sri Lanka, dont waste your money here.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 1st floor have a better view.

I stayed at the Palm Village Hotel for 2 nights and I found it a nice place. The hotel is kept in colonial style with a pleasant garden, swimming pools and direct access to beach.
The rooms are simple, but good enough to stay a few days.
A free wifi was available on very limited area, generally somewhere around the reception desk. You need to pay to get wifi elsewhere.
It might be a good choice if you are on tight budget ;)
