“Perfect stay in Alimounda Mare”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

I have travelled to Greece a lot of times - and this is definately one of the best hotels I've stayed in. It is a vey high quality beach hotel - with a wonderfull pool (36 meters long) and a wonderfull and clean beach. If you go into the water in the right side (facing the sea) there are no stones only sand. The staff are overall very friendly and helpfull. Breakfast is excellent with a lot of possibilities (fresh fruit, fresh made omelets etc.), We stayed in an executive suite. The suite is open plan with two bathrooms and a large balcony with front seaview. It also has turndown service in evenings. Absolutely worth the money. If you go up the hill from the hotel and turns right there is a nice family owned taverna. Very nice place. Only 10 min walk from the hotel is the main town (Pigadia) with a nice habour, shops and restaurants. Restaurant Anna offers daily wonderfull fish. Upon request they offer big lobsters on the grill.

Room Tip: Rooms with front seawiev add something extra

I stayed the last week of May 2013 at the Alimounda Mare with my wife and our 10 months old baby boy. Other guests were almost only from Italy (50%), Norway and Sweden or the Netherlands.

The hotel is quite new, unlike most of the other existing in Karpathos. Facilities are spot on and the personnel make it a wonderful place. From the receptionists to the cleaning lady, everybody was smiling and genuinely helpful. Beds are comfy - however, there are two separate matrasses easily leaving a slight crack in the middle.

We hired one of the receptionists as babysitter during one of her day off while we went diving and we did so in full confidence! We got dry-cleaning fixed during the same day (which was a Sunday, try doing so in Sweden…) and the few requests we had were answered at once.

The hotel is quite children-friendly in the sense that you’ll easily find high chairs for meal time, a microwave and a bottle heater when needed, babycot installed in the room upon arrival. Furthermore, guests mix up well between retired people, 40 something couples and young parents.

However, it is not one of these children paradises with 100 kids screaming around the swimming pool and annoying everybody around. Most of the children behaved properly under the supervision of their parents. You never get at Alimounda Mare the cheap “club” feeling with people hanging around the bar, half drunk with cheap local booze from an all-inclusive formula. A couple of Italian animation guys were around, organizing darts and table tennis contests for those interested, without disturbing the other guests.

We used the spa for pedicure (20 Euros) and a haircut (at a bargain, 10 euros for men !) and were happy with it but it stays an additional service rather than the main attraction of the hotel. Only downside: no real pedicure chair but a simple normal chair not adapted for spa treatment of this kind.

We were rightly afraid to get bored over the week of the buffet-style lunch and dinner so we took only breakfast at the hotel. The latter is top-notch with a wide choice able to cater the need of both Scandinavian and Italian guests. Freshly-made pancakes, fresh fruits, a large range of ham and cheese…the only disappointment was the orange juice. If you don’t want to eat in town, you can order a decent range of meals until 17:30, approx. from 5 to 10 euros. I recommend the fried calamari with tartar sauce if you fancy seafood.

Otherwise the pool bar provides everything that you may want to drink (try the frozen cappuccino !) under the day. After 19:00, the nicer cocktail bar opens in the inside of the hotel, with a wider choice prepared by a more experienced bartender.

Conformable wood sun beds are scattered all around the pool and on the beach. Reservation is not allowed but we always managed to get a good spot regardless of the time we arrived although we may owe it to a less frequented week. The pool is really large and very clean, the view over the ocean is breathtaking !

I cannot understand why some people complain about the beach which is sandy, with some large boulders here and then but far from the feet-cutting sharp edged stones described here and then. We never used our beach sandals while bathing in the sea, our baby played on the wet sand without hassle. There are showers and toilets in the stairway that leads from the pool to the beach. Use the right hand stairway from the snackbar and you will arrive on the side of the beach where there is more sand than pebbles.

If you travel with young children, you will find everything (Nestlé baby food, wet wipes, Pampers diapers…) at the supermarket which is only 300 meters away from the hotel. They do sell fresh drinks as well to fill up the mini fridge in your room (which was surprisingly empty). The hotel’s mini-market is helpful for stamps and mineral water but overpriced for stuff like sun cream. The transfer from the airport took 30 minutes by bus.

Here are our additional tips :

- We asked the room service to provide us with two small potted trees to prevent our baby playing with a small gap (approx. 8 cm) that exists between walls on the balcony.

- We definitively recommend Mike’s restaurant in town, especially the moussaka, best we ever tasted. Overall quite cheap for the quality plus the owner is very friendly. Expect a 35 euros bill for two adults including starter, main course, dessert (lovely loukomades offered by the house) and local wine + water.

- In town also, the Life of Angels has a nice terrace. Try their pork souvlaki, the best of our stay.

- Very close to the hotel, in a side street, the tavern Kali Kardia is run by a Greek and his Dutch wife who both speaks fluently English. The food is OK but the nice and efficient service make it up, plus it’s very cheap like 25 euros for one starter + two main courses + half a liter of house wine. The tzatziki is a must!

- The "Italian" restaurant Uno in the harbor serves very good pizza and pastas, useful when one gets tired of greek food.

- The Lotus bar situated 500-700 meters left of the hotel has friendly staff and the best mojito, if you accept to wait 10 minutes to get it done.

- We were disappointed by the tavern Limanaka located on the same beach, left of the hotel. Food was only so-so, greasy and not so tasteful. Dirty wildcats strayed around in the restaurant. Eat at the hotel’s snack bar instead.

- If you are PADI/CMAS certified diver or only fancying a recreational dive, the Karpathos diving center is located at the end of the harbor. Dimitri the divemaster is a very friendly person, a true professional who saw that our dive went in the best condition. It costs 50 euros per person for a 45 minutes dive with all the equipment provided.

we couldn't have enjoyed our holiday at the Alimounda Mare on Karpathos more. the hotel is perfect - amazing pool and view, excellent food, great rooms and the staff is extremely friendly, attentive and helpful. it's just a 5mins walk to get to the centre of Pigadia where you can find great restaurants and bars. the island is absolutely gorgeous and i recommend to rent a car to explore the hidden and untouched beaches. this one week was full of relaxation, happiness and fun. thanks to the awesome crew of alimounda mare.

me and my girlfriends have been in Karpathos for holiday las summer, it was our first trip to Greece and we had to choice which Island we 'd like to go on holiday, cause at the first sight they look all the same.
We book trough agency ( next time we wont case it's possible find at a lower price doing it by yourself) and they suggest this 5 star hotel in front of the sea, it' a bit close to the main town, and so the sea isn't the best you can find there, but there is an awesome pool looking the beach!
the rooms are big nice, with all the comfort for a pack holiday (o not expect champagne for free) any way it was all great, buffet was full of food for every taste, kids as well! , staff very nice and really polite, but the main surprise was the island with all the little beach that u can easily discover with a rent motorbike or a quad. the water is clear and the send (rocks) isn't that bat at many people can think, the only bad things i'v to notice is that we didn't find and try any good restaurant, mainly cause we had all inclusive pack and second that the are too many touristic restaurant around the city and little town, anyway it's a nice hotel settled in a great location

We were a couple planning a relaxing holiday. First of all, this hotel is primarily visited by italians.
If you are curious, please search the web for more information. The hotel as it self, is quite good. The standards is above average. Our problem with this holiday was the staff, we were a mid twenty couple visiting this hotel. Generally, the staff were not helpful, nor pleasant. Especially we had problems with some of the staff at the restaurant. I will not mention names, but some of the members were directly rude. Please notice, if you plan to visit this hotel, no chance this is a five star hotel. I would rate it 4+, because of the staff, obviously they have no idea of customer treatment.

It might be we had a bad one time experience, but keep in mind, visiting a country in finical crisis and "being a brat". This would a poor holiday.

Regards Norwegian couple

Room Tip: Room with seaside view is great!

We appreciate the input of this review though we do find it sad that the author blamed the entire staff for something only few could be held responsible.
All necessary measures have been taken and all changes have already been made to ensure that our services meet our guests expectations.

From the minute we were met off the ferry from Crete we received excellent service from the whole team. Nothing was too much for them and we had a lovely suite overlooking the pool, beach and the town in the distance. Well located for exploring the town on foot though the buffet restaurant had an excellent choice of dishes and the quality was very high. Hiring a car was made easy by Guest Relations and we had a great day in a 4x4 exploring the beaches and the hinterland - Olympos is well worth a visit.
We shall return as it was well worth the 7 hour boat trip each way from Heraklion in Crete.

It was a great experience. Four days of relaxation and wonderful food.I had a warm welcome from the friendly staff and my room was excellent. I could see the sea { a spectacular view} and I had the feeling that I was in a ship. The swimming pool next to the sea was big and I spent a lot of hours swimming and relaxing. The best place to enjoy your drink Everyone tried to make my life easier. I strongly recommend it. I treasure the time I spent there.
