We searched long and hard for a villa in Crete with airy interiors and the right feel of light and space, plus pool, terraces, good rooms etc. In short we were being quite fussy as this was to be a special family holiday, well overdue.

The Bleverde Estate villas looked lovely and so after much deliberation over whether we should go for something a little less expensive, we decided to treat ourselves and chose Villa Elia (the other more contemporary villa on the estate was already booked, but looked equally stunning).

We booked through Abercrombie and Kent, who were very professional and helpful, and were met at the villa by the owner, Penelope, who is Greek and who's father was born in the village, Gavalochori. Penelope was fantastic, just so welcoming and friendly, and couldn't do enough for us, even though she really didn't need to do anything as everything was perfect. The design of the interior, exterior and gardens is beautiful, we had enough snacks on arrival that we didn't need to go shopping immediately, many other essentials were provided (including beach towels), and the whole feel was of a 5* hotel, but with the whole place to ourselves.

Several different terrace options for all meals, stunning planting and landscaping, a hillside location which meant views out to the sea, an excellent pool, sun loungers, shade, pool room, lovely bathrooms…all ingredients for a wonderful time - we couldn't fault it, and spent all week deciding who to bring back with us next time! Highly recommended, best villa I have seen or been lucky enough to stay in by far.

What a lovely spot to relax and unwind, as well as to base ourselves from to see some of what Crete has to offer.
We stayed in Villa Elia, which was gorgeous. There is somewhere to sit in sunshine or shade at any time of day, we ate on the roof terrace, by the pool, on the terrace outside the front door, on the terrace overlooking the pool...
The villa's facilities are great, everything was easy.
Gavalochori itself is a lovely laid-back spot, with a great taverna, an interesting little museum, gift shop and a couple of minimarkets. Basically, everything you could want for a week or two if you really just wanted to lounge around.
Waking up to the sound of the goats' bells, cockerels, turkeys; watching the swallows dive past and the hawk (maybe a kite?) circling on the thermals. Fabulous!
Really hope we can go again.

we have stayed in Crete many times, and never had a bad villa or meal.
Villa Elia however surpassed itself!
A stunning location
spotlessly clean
beautiful and comfortable inside and out
the owners have real pride in this villa and it shows

I have never ever written a review before but feel compelled to do so after returning from a family holiday in Villa Levanda. It was the best villa we have ever stayed in: luxurious, contemporary, and with views to die for ! In addition, our hosts Penelope and Maria could not have been more accommodating and I loved the fact that they were so proud of the villa, and rightly so. As ever, it was the little touches that made the difference such as the excellent quality of fittings and furnishings, the light and space throughout, the cleanliness and the overall atmosphere of excellence. Outside the villa is just as superb with a breath taking pool and herb gardens that keep the air beautifully fragrant. We had a very special holiday and I have no hesitation at all recommending Villa Levanda to anyone.

After a wonderful visit to Villa Elia in 2012, we came back for another week in August 2013. This is something as a rule we never do, as I think a return trip can be a bit disappointing. But this was certainly not disappointing in any way. All the things we loved about Bleverde the first time (the view, the surroundings, the pool and the villa itself) were just as wonderful - and many improvements have been made with all new bathrooms, a new staircase linking the pool to the villa, and a lovely new outside dining area. I thought Villa Elia couldn't be improved upon, but it has been! For a tranquil holiday where the loudest noise you'll hear are the bells around the goats' necks, and you can feel the stresses of life slipping away, you'll struggle to do better than this.
