“Excellent food and resting spot”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

Stumbled upon this village taverna by accident. Went to the village to visit the small but excellent local museum. Then lunched at Gavilianos Kafenes in the village square. Run by an Australian women who has lived in Greece for many years. Not fussy or fancy but more care and attention to the menu than the average Cretan taverna. Wonderful selection of dips and salads. Very fresh and tasty. And a beautiful position made better through thoughtful design. If you are passing nearby definately worth a visit.

“Great local taverna”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Superb setting, good solid food...not gourmet, but atmosphere, service and setting were excellent!
Need to book as they do get busy, great spot for lunch or supper!

“Fantastic Food & Great Atmosphere.”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

Located in the village square at Gavalochori, this is a great place for dinner. There is an extensive menu of local dishes and some with a Mediterranean flare. I had the Roasted Rosemary Pork, it was one of the best meals of our 10 day trip. What really makes this restaurant stand out is the overall atmosphere, the outdoor garden dining area is a great place for dinner. Many locals were dinning when we were there, obviously a good sign. This is well worth the drive to Gavalochori just to have dinner here.

“Difficult to find better”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

Kafenes is owned by a woman with 5 children. Her husband died some years ago and she works hard to pay for all debts that he made. Her working hard is a success! The restaurant offers very good quality and a lot of fresh dishes. The menu changes daily and is offered at you table (picture).
Do not order the usual dishes from Greek restaurants, but let the owner surprise you!
The terrace at the backyard offers a quiet location for a long evening.
Vamos is nearby, Georgioupolis too, so from Chania make a day trip (in Georgioupolis visit Kalavaki beach!) and have your dinner here!
You will not forget this experience!!

“The best Taverna in Chania”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

This is the sort of place Tripadvisor was made for, a well known secret.

Traditional Cretan music plays as you sit on the stone patio in the breeze surrounded by leafy trees and the noise of cicadas penetrates the background, under the leafy vine covered wooden canopy of ‘Gavalianos Kafenes’.
Rustic charm, good service, excellent food, traditional style, and in my opinion the best taverna in Chania, and certainly in the top five of the entire island of Crete as I know it, and it punches above its weight, as you will find many of the traditional dishes – try the kebab with generous amounts of yoghurt and rice as an accompaniment – which are served in up-market restaurants on the island but do not come anywhere near the quality, taste and freshness of this place. The horta is top notch, the Dakos (traditional rusks with olive oil, tomato, and cheese) truly outstanding in taste and presentation, and everything is made fresh, the Boureki, the Moussaka, the whole range of dishes you can see being prepared through the mini Camara (traditional stone arch) that looks into the kitchen. It’s just one of those places where everything is done with care and attention, you feel familiar but never taken for granted, (I can say this having been over twenty times), it’s consistent but never boring, and characteristic but never twee. Breakfast, lunch or dinner it is a safe bet, and more than that a good choice if you want a really satisfying meal, in an atmospheric friendly place at a good price. I find myself so often going back to ‘Gavalianos Kafenes’, after having gone somewhere else more expensive but not as good as I now realize that it really is hard to beat.
