“Amazing experience in a luxury trailer ;-)”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

Great concept for the ones like me who hate camping :-).
You will sleep in a luxury trailer, with air conditionning, benefit from a nice and private bathroom, sleep in the middle of the winelands, enjoy a beautiful pool, and best of all, children are really welcome! There is a great playground and during the holidays they have a teacher to entertain the kids with fun activities while you relax at the pool.
Some trailers are very nice, other really kitsch and funky... just choose the one you like and enjoy the experience ;-)

Plenty of activities around like quad biking, bike, hiking, horse riding, cruise, ...
I really recommend this place for a different experience!

Room Tip: All rooms are differents and have a different theme, you need to pick up the one that attracts you...

This was our first visit to Old Mac Daddy, but definitely won't be our last. Valley Road in the Elgin Valley was a new road for us to travel and the vistas are magnificent! We arrived mid-afternoon and shared a pizza (scrumptious!!!) along with a terrific mojito and my husband had a good beer on tap. Very relaxing out on the veranda. We chilled for a few hours on the porch reading books (nice umbrellas, comfy couches) and came back to the restaurant several hours later for dinner (we both had burgers - very good). We stayed in the trailer: For Better or For Boerewors" and loved it. It's high on the hillside (lots of stairs to get there), but we liked it because it's out of the way and not a lot of people walking by the trailer. The built-on lounges are wonderful, and the bathrooms large w/ a great shower and very nice shower products. You need to be fairly fit to enjoy your stay here, as there are lots of stairs (no lifts).

The staff here are terrific - welcoming, friendly and competent. We were greeted w/ smiles and quickly checked in; 2 gentlemen carried our bags to our trailer, Godfrey in the restaurant was very friendly and made good recommendations, and everyone we spoke with during our stay there was upbeat and helpful. Definitely some good staff training going on.

There are bikes available for rent, and there are lots of vineyards in the area to visit or for wine tasting. And it's just a beautiful area to drive around.

I think Old Mac Daddy is probably best for couples or families with children that are already mobile. Prams on the stairs can be a bit challenging - carrying them up and down. There's a great play room for the kids, and the pool has a great shallow end for smaller kids to splash and play.

Well worth the drive from the Cape Town area - a fun change from the norm.

Room Tip: If you can do stairs, choose a room higher on the hill - fewer people walking by your trailer. The w...

Stayed a night here after a nearby wedding. Completely different from any other hotel experience. We had the Yellow Submarine trailer and our daughter 'plants'. Both exceptionally clean and a very good breakfast in the morning. Very eco friendly and exceptionally different - Highly recommended.

We actually live in the Elgin/Grabouw area, so have not stayed at Old Mac Daddy itself, but we eat there regularly. It is exceptionally child-friendly which makes for a relaxed experience. The staff are kind enough to take the children's meals to them in the huge and beautifully kitted out playroom.

We often go for pizza, but my husband has had delicious rump and gourmet burgers. I've had delightful fresh salads and wraps. The service is friendly and accommodating, the view is breathtaking and the food is delicious. Do try it.

Just over an hour's drive from Cape Town, Old MacDaddy reflects the pioneering spirit of its co-founder, the inspirational Jody Aufrichtig, who I met on the plane between LHR and Cape Town. What a star! He spoke with a non-invasive enthusiasm about the uniqueness of Old MacDaddy - and goodness me, we weren't disappointed. Aesthetically hugging the hillside are around 12 highly individual vintage AirStream caravans built into very attractive 'cabins' with a comfortable living area and shower room. The Airstream interiors are designed by talented artists to create a different theme for each plot. We stayed in 'Metalmorphosis' - its 'wow' factor being the magnetic interior which allows the guest to move the lights and shelves and giant jigsaw pieces, depending on their preference. There's even a full height nail screen which encourages guests to create face and body shape sculptures - terrific fun.
Chatting to other guests, we learned of other superb themes which has encouraged me to plan another visit very soon!
The stunning surrounding countryside is working farmland - and Old MacDaddy is the result of collaboration between the developers and the locals, creating a real sense of integrity and harmony with the environment.
The staff were delightful, the restaurant produced a simple but delicious menu and the wine was scrumptious (of course).
We came away feeling we had witnessed something very very special and the memory of Old MacDaddy will raise a smile for years to come.

Room Tip: Establish what themes are available and make your choice!

Stayed here recently for a wedding and had the most incredible experience! We stayed in the Yellow Submarine trailer and it was AWESOME. So much space, so clean, fantastic views and amazing staff. The whole place is an experience in its own, very eco friendly and a great place to unwind.
The food in the restaurant was also amazing, we had steak and fish, and were blown away.

Get a group together, and DEFINITELY go here - whether you are backpacking, or a local capetonian, it is a MUST!

Room Tip: All are different, so check out the website before hand!

This is a place of absolute tranquility and beauty. We enjoyed one night in the King Midas and we truly felt we were away for longer, time slowed and you just had to decide whether you would chill by the pool with a nice cold drink or by the lake or in any of the beautiful little spots set around the place. We loved the fresh continental breakfast which was included in the price and will be sure to go back. All of the staff were lovely and friendly and we really felt welcome but with an added bit of tlc.I really have to say if you are half thinking of going think no further and do it... you wont regret it!!

Part wholesome caravan park, part designer farm lodge, Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel is a new chapter in adventure, escapism and pure relaxation. Set on the pine-whispering slopes of a beautiful corner of the Elgin Valley, Old Mac Daddy is a collection of vintage Airstream Trailer Suites, each designed by an artist, designer or creative living and working in Cape Town. Fully catered and serviced; Old Mac Daddy offers trailer units with themed bedrooms and earth-friendly living spaces. A big designer barn is the communal area where all meals are served. Visit the Grolsch bar or take a dip in the swimming pool, explore the area or just relax. TRAILER SUITES Old Mac Daddy consists of ten trailer suites, two lake-side units and a family farm house - Daddy’s Villa. Each of our trailer suites is a world of its own. The Airstreams themselves have been transformed into bespoke bedrooms; each with its own theme, style and feeling from the magical to the quirky and a whole range of delicate and wonderful things in between. All but the lakeside suites, have additional living areas and decks, which allow for light-filled lounging (or use it as a kids bedroom) and time out. An en-suite bathroom with shower adds luxury to the experience making it a camping holiday like no other. Heated in winter, cooled in summer and cleverly insulated throughout, you will be sleeping way past the first cock-a-doodle-doo! THE BARN, RESTAURANT AND GROLSCH BARThis barn is more of an off-piste designer ski-lodge (without the snow, of course) boasting dramatic agrarian vistas and a vibe that says poolside in summer, fireside in winter. The indoor-outdoor Barn is where guests can enjoy healthy, wholesome meals, and treats throughout the day. Chef Siya Mnguni and restaurateur Gordon Manuel have composed a kitchen vision that centres around fresh, local ingredients and big appetites. Grolsch, the premium Dutch beer behind the sleek, magnetic Airstream, is also the creative force behind the world-class bar at the heart of the park. The large 13-metre bar makes a bold statement with its size and striking finishes. One of only a few to offer Grolsch draught, the bar is fitted with a stainless steel tap imported from Europe. Old Mac Daddy welcomes small people with an indoor-outdoor play area and a daily kiddies meal. Parents must take heed however that a pool and natural, unfenced lakes are a part of this landscape and children should be watched at all times. CONFERENCING & CELEBRATIONSA brilliant venue for conferences, meetings, pow-wows, retreats, celebrations and weddings – Old Mac Daddy can be rented entirely for functions or partially for meetings. A boardroom/conference area is located on the property (seats 20). Wireless broadband is available for those needing to get some work done. WHO IS IT FOR?Old Mac Daddy is for anyone who needs a break from the city. Anyone who wants to breathe fresh air, have apple juice run down their chin and swim in the farm dam and spend star-shot nights melting marshmallows over the fire. It’s for anyone who loves to take brisk walks in winter and then curl up in front of a cosy fire. Old Mac Daddy is for everyone. ... more   less
