We traveled to Zakynthos in August '11 with another couple of friends so : 2 rooms. We arrived there by car at about 20:00 PM.We found the rooms to be spotless with clean sheets and towels(the sheets and towels were changed ONLY ONCE in 7 days though - luckily we had brought our own). The rooms had two double beds, nightstands, mirror, closet. The air conditioning is charged 4 euro /day but i wouldn't suggest taking it because you don't need it.At nights the temperature would drop from 36 degrees C to 20-22 degrees C.We took the air conditioning for the first day and we didn't use it at all but we had to pay it anyway. In the closet you will find the safe which also costs 2 euro/day.We didn't take it as we didn't need it.
The hotel does have an interior parking but that is only used by the owner and they wouldn't allow guests to park there. There is a black limo,an old jaguar and other vans that belong to them.As a conclusion you need to park on the street in front of the hotel(if you find any parking place) or you would be sent to another parking between some olive trees 30 m down the road which belongs to Kyprianos hotel situated across the street. The parking issue caused a lot of stress to me because even when i had a small accident in the parking lot going backwards into an olive tree and breaking my rear window and denting my trunk,i wasn't allowed to park in the hotel interior parking because the owner wanted to drive some guests with the limo to a restaurant and he didn;t want to leave it on the street. As a conclusion i was sent to park exactly in the same spot i hit it several hours before, completely unsafe.SO THE HOTEL HAS NO PARKING.The parking is either on the street, either in Kyprianos Villa parking between some olive trees and just in one precise location not anywhere you want as the parking doesn't belong to Markella.
The hot water schedule is from 6 AM - 8 AM and from 6 PM - 8 PM which is also very annoying when you come back from the beach at 8 and everybody is showering and all that is left for you is cold water. We had to come back early to get prepared for the night out because we had to "catch" the hot water.
We were also asked not to throw toilet paper into the toilet because the drain would clog and just throw it to the bin which we found very disgusting.Just imagine the smell that would cause.
The toilet flushing system had a problem and it wouldn't flush when you pressed the button so we had to lift the top and flush it manually almost every time.
The pool bar is open till 11-12 PM but on one occasion the owners closed early and left to eat out.
The pool schedule is from 8 AM - 8 PM which was also very annoying. We couldn't take a relaxing swim because when we came back from visiting or seaside the pool was already closed. The pool had underwater lights but they were never lit because we were told the electricity is very expensive. Also they mentioned not to leave the air conditioning running when we're not in the room or leave any lights on because they would shut them off.
The pool is cleaned almost every morning by the owner and i think it would have been great to spend an hour or two at dusk by the pool but it wasn't possible as i mentioned above.
At the pool bar there is a free wifi internet connection.
Breakfast is the only meal that can be served at markella which is rather expensive for what it offers. As a conclusion we only took it once and after that we went to the enchanting tavernas facing the beach where the breakfast had the exact same price and was richer. Keri Restaurant: 5 euro - English breakfast: two fried eggs, two sausages, beans, french fries, bread, butter, juice and coffee or tea. Markella: 5 euro - two fried eggs, bread, butter, coffee or juice.
Mythos beer at Markella - 2,5 euro, Mythos beer at Keri Restaurant - 2,5 euro. so there was no difference.
They told us not to bring any beer/juice down at the pool bar so we had to buy it from there but that was not a problem for us because we had enough money.
Debbie was very cute, polite and helpful as was her daughter Kristina which was working all day long with her parents despite she had a summer holiday.Dimitri, the owner, gave us very good tips about things do to or not to do on the island, places to go,tavernas to try and so on.His tips were great and we appreciated it very much.
Debbie was very kind and lent us some snorkeling equipment that other tourists left there so we didn't need to buy any.
As a conclusion,Markella is very basic, reasonably priced, good position in a wonderful resort(Keri Lake) but it also has its minuses which i already mentioned above.
My advice would be for young couples (20-35 years old) not to go there because that's not a suitable atmosphere. As Dimtri told us he doesn't want young people staying at his hotel because they are noisy an would disturb the other guests. That was not our case though.
Hope you find my review useful.

we booked a late deal in eary april and although with hindsite and information we obtained from dimitri and debbie we perhaps thought the first day that we were too early for decent weather, however this year it was superb !!.

We must say the service we got from dimitri and debbie was first class, they saved us at least 5 days of our holiday by ther informative information ( we were actually the only ones in hotel ).

Debbie and Dimitri we wiil see you in October Mike and Donna xx

We stayed at Markella the last 2 weeks in June and had a really lovely time.Limni Keri itself is a charming little resort. The studios are about a 10 mins walk to the beach which although pebbly is lovely. The sea is wonderful so clear calm and perfectly safe for children stays shallow for quite a long way out. There are sunloungers to hire & trees for shade if you wish. The weather was very hot but there was always a nice cooling breeze.Lining the harbour there are about half a dozen tavernas all serving very good food and I must say that the staff in all were very friendly and helpful.Dimitre Debbie and Kristina are a lovely family who go out of their way to make sure that everyone has everything they need for a perfect holiday. The studio was spotless clean towels and sheets twice a week.Although situated on the road the traffic noise didnt bother us we had a totally relaxing holiday.Debbie arranged a car for us for three days so we saw all this lovely island(apart from lagonas). We hope to return to Markella Studios next year so look forward to it . We certainly recommend here for a lovely relaxing time.

We stayed for only a week in mid June and wished we could have stayed longer. the Markella studios are well situated and have a fanstastic swimming pool. The short walk down the main road to the seaside tavernas and beach was pleasant and pretty with its olive grows and riot of geraniums, olianders, bougenvillas and fruit trees. As an alternative walk to the beach using the Kerri Lake road at the otherside of the property. small farms and other holiday apartments surround the lake. Look for the terrapins in the cannal.
The rooms were airy and clean with a small balcony facing the road. Just perfect to watch the passing traffic. I rose early each morning and the birdsong from the adjoining olive grove was truly amazing.
Debbie is particularly friendly and helpful. She and Dimitri are vey approachable and good hosts. Ask Debbie for copy of walking trails. Well worth a try but look at gradients before walking :)
Will try to return soon

We had been to Markella last year, and had quite and relaxing holiday, so we booked again for this June. Debbie Dimitri and Kristina are wonderful hosts, nothing is to much trouble for them, anything that you need they will provide. If anything this years holiday was better than last so much so that we have booked again to go in August. The rooms were clean bedding and towels changed regularly, with Debbie the housekeeper doing an excellent job. For anyone wanting a quite and relaxing holiday I cannot recommend it enough. The village of Keri is both beautiful and charming. Totally different from the purpose built holiday resort, it is the sort of place that you could go back time and time again, as we have. The people are extremely friendly. The swimming pool is very large for the amount of rooms, the gardens are a credit to Dimitri. We love everything about this place especially the warmth and friendliness of Debbie Dimitri and Kristina

My wife and I spent a fortnight in the Markella Studios, at the beginning of the month. We chose this particular property because it is many years since we have been to one of the smaller Greek Islands - never to Zante - , it is within walking distace of the beach and the small harbour at Keri, and finally because we had read a number of good reports, particularly about the friendliness of the owners and about their lovely, large swimming pool, from Trip Advisor.
Each day started with our pre-ordered breakfast near the bar. Debbie, Dimitri, and sometimes their daughter Kristina, served us, and we chatted with them, making it a pleasant start to the day. Later in the morning, we walked around the dried-up Lake Keri finishing up at the front, where the sea was always very, very calm. We shopped daily at one of the three small mini-markets near the front .
After a sandwich- with- wine lunch on our large balcony, we had a siesta and then went down to the pool area for a time of relaxation and then a good swim in the excellent deep pool 20 yards long (18 m) with pleasant surroundings. During our stay, we swam 730 lenghts between us. We often had the pool to ourselves.
In the evenings, we either stayed in, reading and playing card on the balcony, with a simple cooked meal, or we had a meal out. There are some pleasant restaurants on the front; The portions are large, so we often shared four starters as our meal. Twice we did the 20 minute walk up to the Italian restaurant La Brochetta with its stunning views. with good food and wine.
With another couple who were staying in the studios, we went out for a day's trip around the island with Dimitri as our driver-guide. It was an experience from beginning to end, as our host shared with us the history of the island and also details of his "many lives". Excellent value for money. He made the four of us feel that we haven't started to live.
All I can say about our hostess is a little song I ofen sang to her. "Debbie to the rescue, Debbie to the rescue, Debbie to the rescue, once again." She is a "little gem".
I should say that there were never more than ten guests, often many less, when we were there, so it was very quiet. The only negative point as far as we were concerned was the lack of cushions on the loungers. Lying down on them never lasted too long.
Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We have just returned from our one week holiday at Markella and must say, it has been one of the best holidays we have had. Myself and my boyfriend were looking for somewhere quiet and relaxing with local charm that wouldn't break the bank. Both Keri as a location, and Markella as our accommodation, met these wishes perfectly.

I will start with Keri as a location. It is a peaceful little village with enough to do if you want to go out and explore, but not enough to make you feel guilty if you would rather soak up the nice walks, relax and do not a lot else. We hired a little boat for 2 hours and went to turtle island where we were able to anchor in a crystal clear bay (just off the cave site away from the boats visiting the caves themselves). I am usually a bit of a whimp when it comes to swimming in the sea but my boyfriend could not get me back on the boat!!! The clear, calm waters were too good to miss so we spent a lovely half hour swimming around in the bay. 2 hours is enough to get to the island, around the island, make a stop on both beaches and our swim in the bay. The water is so clear we could easily have hired the boat for 3 hours to anchor in a few more places to swim.

We also hired a car for a day. This was enough to leisurely tour about half the island, stopping at a few beaches for half an hour or so (again in crystal clear waters - Gerakas and a little sulphur bay were particularly gorgeous). The capital was worth a visit to soak up the real local town atmosphere and catch some seafood.

The food in Keri was gorgeous - great selection of local food. The first Taverna on the left walking from Markella to Keri front, along with 'Keri Restaurant' were the best we found. If you fancy a walk, approximately 40 minutes up the hill towards Keri town, there is a little Taverna called Apelati which is well worth a visit (but you will need a car if you are going at night as you would not want to walk back in the dark). Authentic Greek food cooked by Denja and the family's grandmother for a truly unforgettable experience.

So on to Markella our accommodation. Facts (1) the rooms are spotless. (2) Hot water available all through the day. (3) Lovely balconies to sit and eat breakfast listening to the birds (and yes, there is passing traffic as it overlooks a road but the noise level was never an issue and did not take away from the peaceful surroundings, day or night). (4) Our rooms were cleaned twice in a week – more than I would expect for a self catering apartment but the toilet roll and bins seemed to be checked on a daily basis. We ran out of toilet roll once but on my way down to ask Debbie for another roll, I ran into Debbie's (the fastidious cleaner!) stash of spare toilet rolls at the end of our row. There was a mop, bucket, dustpan and brush at the end of each row should you wish to clean your room in between the service cleans.

(5) We did not experience a noisy bar! We stayed at the same time as the review below. We went to the bar early evening every night before heading out for a meal. When we returned we went straight back to our room (so usually about 11pm) and were never disturbed by noise from the bar (which seemed to close by midnight each night anyway). The bar rarely had more than 4 people at it when we got back to our room and apart from a friendly 'hello' as we went up to our room, I can honestly say we were never disturbed by noise. There are garden bungalows located off the road, pretty much similar distance away from the bar if you are really concerned about the traffic noise but it really wasn't a problem (and we are light sleepers). (6) Fantastic large pool – perfect for doing lengths or just floating around without feeling on top of anyone else in the pool! (7) Very reasonably priced food and drink at the bar.

Yes the rooms could be described as basic (apart from the garden bungalows which I cannot comment on) but Markella has never tried to suggest it is anything else. The rooms are clean, have a bed, safe, air con, wardrobes with hangers and extra pillows, a sofa and dressing table. What more do you want or need in such a beautiful place?

Finally, whilst our review of Markella is based on the points mentioned above, we cannot finish without mentioning Debbie, Dimitri and Kristina. They are a wonderful family, full of character who made our holiday very special. Debbie is an amazing woman who cannot help you enough, Dimitri kept us smiling and entertained every day and gave Markella great character and charm, and Kristina is a credit to them both.

Thank you Markella!
