We went on a 12 day cruise through the Mediterranean & through very careful planning knew pretty much what to expect everywhere we went. Well, let me just say, there is something to be said for not having any preconceived notions. We booked a "Best of Corfu" tour through Princess Cruise lines months earlier & honestly kind of forgot about it, with all of our anticipation focused more on all of those bucket list places we'd always dreamed of going. From the moment our cruise ship came in view of Corfu, my husband & I fell in love with it & the Achilleon Palace is a big part of the reason why! It's magnificent! Built for the much beloved Princess "Sissi" of Austria who so loved the Greek isle's, especially Corfu, that she built her home there. The formal gardens have a dream like quality to them. I truly would have been happy to just stay right there all day! But we went inside the palace & wow, it's jaw dropping. There are a lot of Sissi's personal items to look at & a lot of history to learn - some of which is quite tragic. The Princess created a beautiful palace that still stands today, forever in her honor. This is a MUST if you are ever in Corfu!

... was more of a villa-style building rather than a palace but it had a lot of artwork and was kind of an exotic place...

More or less a classical villa-style majestic residence that has four floors and a veranda with many sculptures that leads to a garden with a great statue of Achilleus overlooking the sea.

The empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as Sisi) was fond of Greek mythical hero Achilles. In the name of this admiration she built this beautiful palace in the last decade of the nineteenth century as her summer residence. There is also lovely garden around the palace. The view from the terrace is fabulous, The palace is easy to find especially if you're settled in town of Corfu in the north (the capital of the island) or Benitses in the south (little coastal town). The price is 7EU and undoubtedly it's worth seeing.
