“Samui Sense - It's pretty radcore.”
Reviewed February 21, 2010

lame title, but seriously, great place to stay if you don't mind paying about 2500-3000 baht a night.

for those who haven't been to koh samui before (or to any of thailand for that matter), I would highly recommend splashing out just a little more money on accommodation because you definitely get a lot of bang for your buck (unless maybe you are staying in thailand for more than a month or so).
samui sense were great, they were very accommodating of all our needs, they even drove me to the doctor when I became a bit sick with a lung infection which was nice.
even just the standard superior rooms are fantastic, I stayed in these and knew people staying there in the poolside villa and garden villa(? - can't remember the exact name) which were nice but the superior rooms are actually in a more recently built building so if you don't mind necessarily not having a window (even though some of the superior ones do have balconies) then the I would definitely recommend the superior over any other room in the hotel (odd I know, but just trust me and save your money...and ironically get a bigger tv!)

the breakfast buffet is great with lots of variety (like most breakfast's in moderately priced thai hotels), if you are a coffee drinker - you will appreciate the coffee (as many as you like) made by a barista every morning.
the restaurant at samui sense after breakfast is also great with a massive selection of meals and drinks. they are a little pricey though compared to many other places along the beach so make sure you go for a wander!
if you are up for super cheap thai food, directly across the road from samui sense is a great place open all day serving things like a plate chicken pad thai for around $1.30 Australian - can't go wrong!

tips as well for anyone staying in lamai:
If you are in the age bracket of 18-28yrs (like we were) just a warning - whilst lamai is an incredibly relaxing contrast to chaweng, it IS mostly populated now by 35-60yr olds, mostly european couples. so if a sea of speedos and the occasional old dude wearing a g-string wont ruin your holiday then great - definitely still go there. If on the other hand it will really stop you from relaxing and enjoying yourself, maybe chaweng is the way to go.

Finally, if it is an issue, samui sense don't hire dvd players and the dodgy indian dude up the main strip in the dvd shop wants you to pay 150bht ($5 aus) per night for one! this can be a bit of a let down if you are sick of watching anderson cooper on CNN and endless repeats of samuel l. jackson movies on hbo. but have no fear - we have the solution! grab a moped and cruise down to 'Tesco Lotus' which is the closest thing to a shopping centre on samui and buy the cheapest dvd player you can. they have a 7 day money back return policy. nuff said.

Oh! and the most important thing OF ALL! if you are going to full moon party just for the night DO NOT book with a company called 'seahawk'. check with the travel agent/hotel or whoever you are booking with that the company is not called 'seahawk'. long story short, they overbook and in the end choosing to book with them shaved a casual 4 hours off the time we could've spent at the party.

i hope somewhere in all that mess you found something helpful to plan your trip!

Had a great 4 days in a superior room at Samui Sense. Was very pleasantly surprised with the standard of accommodation and the location. The strong points for this hotel: location on lamai beach (much less crowded, yet within 15min from chaweng), great value for money accommodation and great great restaurant on the beach.

Would suggest the deluxe / junior suite rooms with balcony's for longer stays, but the normal rooms are quite sufficient for a short 4 or 5 day breakaway.

We stayed here for two nights for the first leg of our 13-day honeymoon. We were exhausted and glad we had a place to ready for us. When we arrived we were greeted very warmly by the staff, along with a cold towel and welcome drink. Our room was average, not as big as we imagined and only one small window that looked out on the roof tops of neighboring villas. We would recommend to definitely request a room with a balcony. The room was clean and comfortable enough for us, especially after a 30 hours of traveling. This hotel is located on a main strip but from inside the grounds you would never know. It is very peaceful.

The breakfast buffet at the hotel was nice, enough food to start your day. The service was also very good!

The hotel is located in a great spot with easy access to restaurants, shops, drugstores, massages, etc. Our favorite thai restaurant was located across the street from the hotel with wooden tables and plastic chairs with the preparation of food at the front of the restaurant. The food was delicious and cheap...a full dinner for $6, including beer!

I would recommend this hotel if you're just looking for a place to crash for a couple days. Not a lot of bells and whistles. We did find a special rate ($70/night) for our stay and in looking at the full rate, honestly, I would find a different place for the price.

This is was a disappointing experience. We had rented this particular hotel because TripAdvisor reviews said it was recently remodeled. Well, yes, the expensive rooms were indeed recently remodeled. However our room hasn't seen an update since the 80s. The paint was peeling and the room has a serious musty smell. Moreover, the window looked out into a weird hallway and there was hardly any daylight. Though we didn't come to Koh Samui expecting to hang out in the room the whole time, the decrepitness of the fixtures put a damper on our moods.

The good things about the hotel were the beach and the breakfast. The beach had very comfortable beach chairs and the breakfast was tasty. However my disappointment with the room will prevent me from staying in this hotel again.

Just wanted to say this is a brilliant hotel. We stayed here for our honeymoon and it was great. On arrival we were given refreshing welcome drinks and a damp towel to freshen up with. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We decided to check out 2 days early and go to Bangkok as well. When we told the reception, this was no problem and they offered to ring the people who our tranfer bus to to the airport was with to arrange an earlier transfer date, free of charge.
Pool area is lovely and food in restaurant is grand. It is a little bit more expensive than on the street but the location is just wonderful. At night, they move the tables onto the beach and place lights and flags on the beach, so you can have the romantic dinner.
Reception organised our moped and even gave us some helpful advice on the mopeds tyres. There are 2 computers with free internet access in the recpetion and as far as I can remember there are several wi-fi points around the hotel.
Lobby entrance is really nice and relaxing and the hotel is very well kept. We never seen a single ant or other insect in our time there. The only thing I would say is pay a little bit extra for the rooms with a balcony. The superior rooms don't have them as they face the other way.
All in all, a truly wonderful hotel. Would not hesitate staying here again if wew were to go back to Koh Samui.

We stayed at the Samui Sense Resort for 4 nights and it was brilliant. We were welcomed with a drink by very friendly staff who spoke pretty good English. The hotel itself is very small so it's almost like your there on your own! We had a standard room which was very clean with good air conditioning and a huge comfy bed! Beach towels are also provided free of charge and are changed daily.

The restaurant is right on the beach and serves great food at average prices. We were B&B. The choice was good and the service in the restaurant was fantastic. At night they put chairs/tables on the beach-very relaxing!! There are plenty of good restaurants along the beach too.

Sun loungers are available on the beach and by the pool-there are plenty of them. The waiters are more than happy to bring you drinks over and move your beds for you! The pool is very clean.

The hotel is situated on the main road-once you are in the hotel it's very quiet! You dont hear anything. There are plenty of bars/shops and restaurants to wonder round. We booked a trip to the Ang Thong at our hotel and got a very good price-Strongly recommend. Remember insect repellant!

All in all a lovely hotel. Excellent value for money and would definately go back

We stayed at the Samui Sense for the last 10 days of our stay in Thailand, we loved the beach, it is quieter than most, but perfect for us. The breakfast was very good and
the restaurant is located right next to the beach, so made for a wonderful morning experience.

In the evening they set tables up on the beach and dinner is served close to the ocean,
it is lovely.

We had a suite and found it very comfortable, the staff were extremely accommodating,
the pool was great and everything was very compact it was only a short walk to the pool, to the beach, all very close.

There are many great restaurants close by, and all one has to do is go for a walk and
find a busy restaurant, a restaurant with no customers told us it was not very good, but they have a great variety of well priced eateries very close to the hotel.

We would recommend Samui Sense, also loved the peacocks.
