the pros .... a great swimming pool with plenty of loungers and one staff member who was helpful.
the cons ... Booked a thai villa which was incredibly bad.A stale, musty smell as soon as you open the door ( if it stayed on its hinges ),1 wardrobe for your clothing ( not enough),tv with 4 western channels and a bathroom that had to be seen to be believed.if you are a dwarf, you won't have a problem with the shower.otherwise forget it.And this in thai heat !!! the curtain rail was dangerous to use.apart from one staff member the others came across as uncaring.there is far better value in lamai.

Room Tip: dont stay here !!!!!!!!!!!

My stay at Samui Sense was most enjoyable. The beachfront location of the Resort is perfect which added to the impact of the ideal weather I experienced while there. I loved the picturesque grounds as well but what won me and made me determined to return was the friendliness of the staff. I am a regular visitor to Thailand and have enjoyed Thai hospitality before but this was it at its best. While my comments apply to many there including the restaurant, I must give a special mention to the Reception staff. I have stayed in many hotels and resorts in a number of countries and many places in Thailand and found these the best I have experienced, most welcoming and helpful as well as being efficient. I can't wait to return there

Samui Sense Beach Resort pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Courteous staff
2. Good Room
3. Quiet around the pool
4. Plenty of tan beds
5. Superb value for money.

Cons:
1. We had to go and ask for the toiletries to be replaced. This was done promptly but we had to go and tell, twice.

We chose to stay at Haad Lamai as against the more popular, Chaweng. This turned out to be an excellent choice. Lamai was lively without being crowded and having all the eateries that would ensure a fussy eater doesn't die of starvation.

Room Tip: The staff replied to my emails promptly. so you can mail and adjust your room bookings before you tr...

Background - we have been to Thailand 6 times and stayed on Koh Samui at various hotels before, we spent more than usual for this hotel, due to the reviews at the time, as this was a special trip for us. . We arrived for a 13 night stay and were greeted by "the Manager", a man, who couldn't be bothered! taken to a Thai Villa (cost £957) - Steps to veranda/front door broken and worn out/sloping to the left. Front Door didn't fit frame, large gap at bottom 2 fingers deep (mosquito & roaches please come in) warped in corner & rattled? Room Very dark and musty, air con only worked at medium - then the biggy, the bathroom!!! see pictures; Old bath with rusty and dirty fittings, dirty plastic shower curtain, broken/groutless tiles, dirty and mouldy, shower attachment falling out of wall and at the hight of my shoulder, (squatting showers ahead) Dead/squashed mossies on wall and windows, dirty mesh at windows, also rusting & dirty. The theme here is dirt.
We complained to the manager who didn't give a damn, showed us a poolside room (a line of terraced rooms, tiny and tired looking)with no better bathrooms, more like toilet block. Then he said the houskeeper would try and get the shower head re-fitted higher??? Offered an upgrade to a juniour suite for only 2000Baht per night a mere £572 on the trip!!! we said we didn't have that and maybe a refund so we could go somewhere else, we know of a few much better places on Koh Samui - some much cheaper than here. He said we could talk to expedia (whom we booked through) and good luck with that. He really didn't care and walked off. We were discussing what to do when he came back and offer the upgrade for 1000Baht per night (£287 on trip). We did as we had no other solution.
We did get a better room, bigger, cleaner and decent air con. Mattress on the floor, thai style and hard as you'd expect, although many other hotels have more "western" soft mattresses. Bathroom still a bath with hose shower and plastic curtain.
We were not the only ones to be treated like this and feel this way about the Villas - 2 days after we arrived a German couple were complaining about the room and a few days after that we heard an English couple saying the same as us. If we heard 2 other couples then how many others complained?
Pool- small but nice, be careful of groutless tiles.
Breakfast - Poor compared to other hotels costing less - but adequate for most people.
Beach - small narrow strip belongs to hotel, right hand side is gutter where rainwater etc runs down to sea after any rain! The beaches are getting really poor, lots of rubbish collecting, fag butts etc from guests, some hotels rake the sand each morning but not this and many other hotels around here.
Grounds - very nice and pleasant, the coy carp near reception are huge.
Restaurant - at night, excellent - some of the best food we ate, and we've been around, a tad more expensive than on Lamai high street, but worth it. Tables on beach a nice touch but with dirty sand i'd stay on the raised restaurant part.
Staff - apart for the "manager"!! they were very helpful, polite and efficient, try speaking a few Thai words and they really appreciated it.
This is a tired, run down hotel, they are doing some work on it, painting at night, but be warned it is over priced compared to many other hotels, I appreciate other reviews about this hotel, but compared to what we have received else where for a lot less money I say avoid until they have a revamp and drop their prices.

Room Tip: NOT Poolside or Thaai Villa - First or Second floor suites ONLY

This hotel is on the beach in Lamai. My wife and I stayed in a Poolside Villa and loved it.
The closeness to the Beach is the + with this hotel, with free sunbeds for people staying at the hotel is also a +. This hotel i will say is best suited for couples. There is not much to do for children and the pool is not that big. The closensess to the main street in Lamai is also a +, it is
a little way outside the main ruckess and noise from the pub´s. Another + is the resturant at the hotel is also on the beach and some nights a week they place out beanbags on the beach so you can sit and watch to stars and enjoy some drinks.

Room Tip: The poolside rooms are great.

We travelled to Koh Samui to celebrate NYE 2011/12.
As it was peak and everywhere was either booked out or expensive we opted to stay at Samui Sense.
The feedback provided seemed positive and photos on the website not too bad.

As we arrived we were greeted by the senior hotel manager and checked in.
As we were shown our room it was a room which was a garden view on ground floor.
The room was definately dark and had a stale smell from the air con.
There were oil burners around the room, I am sure this is to cover up the smell.
We had no choice but to stay as it was NYE and every where else was booked out.
As we were on the ground floor we noticed the bathroom would smell horrid during the day as i am sure there we sewerage/drainage issues where it would travel from above rooms to the lower rooms out.

The pool is not on the beach front as seen in some photos on websites.
There is a restaurant on the beach front which I would say was the only positive, the chef was a good cook and the menu had a variety of different options from English, Italian to thai food.
The other issue no menus were in the rooms for the restaurant so you had to walk down to restaurant and order requesting room service delivery.

I found some of the front desk staff unfriendly and were not throughly trained in customer/hospitality service compared to other resorts within Koh Samui.
We were promised a scooter rental however, then advised they were all booked out.

I would only reccomend this hotel if you book poolside or the upper level rooms to avoid smells.

Room Tip: Do not book garden view rooms to avoid sewerage smells.

As regular travellers to Koh Samui, we decided once again to spend our Christmas holidays in Thailand. Having stayed at various locations in various hotels, we decided to stay this time in Lamai and began to search for a hotel of choice.

We eventually short listed Samui Sense, as the website looked inviting and, began our usual due diligence in reviewing reviews of past holiday makers. We noticed a large amount of positive reviews and eventually settled for a five day stay in a junior Suite.

Check-in was efficient and friendly with a welcoming glass of juice.

We were promptly shown to our room and upon opening of the door, were immediately hit with a pungent musty smell that was overbearing and, even though we arrived on a sunny day, you required a torch to see into the room...it was that dark!

As the hotel and, indeed the entire Island was fully booked, we had no choice other than to stay in the hotel. The manager advised that he may be able to move us "in a few days" but this never eventuated, accepting that it was peak season and rooms were not available.

In order to alleviate the odour, we resorted to oil burners and open windows, despite the risk of insect bites. This helped somewhat.

Overall, the hotel is located nicely on the beach however, don't expect 5 star luxury. The hotel could do with an overhaul.

Breakfast was nothing special but acceptable for the price. The location of the breakfast area is right on the beach which makes for a relaxing breakfast with beach vistas.

In conclusion, we are very surprised that not too many reviewers mentioned the dark and damp rooms. We asked a few other guests as well as could see into other rooms that were being cleaned and, the darkness and musty smell were very evident, even from the hallway.

Overall, unless other, brighter rooms were available, we could not recommend a stay here unfortunately.

Room Tip: Do not get a ground floor room as they are very dark & musty. Pool side Bungalows looked dated...
